Okay so I've been listening to this song over and over, and I was wondering if it's maybe about distancing yourself from homophobic family members or if I'm just projecting?
It sounds, at least to me, like instead of conforming to narrow minded, hateful ideals and letting them try to 'fix' them, the singer has decided to love herself and live authentically, because keeping the peace with people who will never truly love you isn't worth denying the real love that you could have with someone else.
About learning nott care what they think about you anymore, letting them believe you're I'm dirty and broken, because you can happier in the 'dirty water' than when you were holy in their eyes.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, and either way, I love this song so much!
That's sort of the gist of it! It wasn't written specifically about homophobia but you're on the right track overall! I like this interpretation :)
