the speed is not as bad as real spoken german, in real life i manage to translate the first sentence in my head and the story is already over and i miss the joke :( ..i assume there is a joke but maybe they're all laughing at me... hmm
The empathic introduction you gave is really useful. I often feel like a child speaking a foreign language, and I don't have the same humor, and less competant. It was nice, the way you described this feeling.
The subtitles are still in german, so i don't feel too bad about needing them. It's a natural progression for me: Developping listening skills comes always later. For now, my brain/ear can hear well only the few sporadic words i know, but the more words i'll learn to write and to pronounce myself, the easier my brain will hear them when other poeple say them. 😅 For now, i'm more than half deaf.
I practice German (and all other languages I have studied) by talking to myself while I walk. I give a running commentary to myself about all that I am seeing or doing. This gives me ample opportunity to practice the same sentences over and over again to make them smoother, with no pressure of an audience. Afterwards, the smoothness carries over to real situations.
Every time I go to Berlin, the locals do as you say; they speak to me in English when I speak to them in German. It's infuriating. I just kindly say, "Auf Deutsch, bitte. Ich möchte (mein) Deutsch üben." Then they smile and say "Ok" and speak to me only in German. Now I know an even more polite way to make the same request. Danke sehr!!
maybe because it is a Signal that they need you to speak to them auf Englisch because it make take time for them to figure out and to understand when you speak to them auf Deutsch with a probability of misflow in conversation, oder?
This is my biggest frustration when I visit Berlin - where my partner’s family is from (and nearby as well). EVERY single time I start to speak German (even if I haven’t said anything incorrectly, they just hear I’m not native) they switch to English and it makes me want to rip my hair out. Whenever we visit Berlin, I’m desperately trying to use the opportunity to practice my German. Cari hit the nail on the head with this. It is probably the single biggest frustration for people who go to Germany hoping to try to speak with natives. The tips are brilliant. I am definitely going to memorise a few standard sentences. That will really help :) My last comment is: I also speak Polish and it is a very difficult language to speak - so way to go Cari! Lastly, sometimes it doesn’t help me either because I try and do things in German that work only in Polish, so it messes me up. Knowing one hard language doesn’t always help you learn another. Haha :D
just remember the times you visit other foreign countries when you can only say "hello" and "thank you" in the local language; did it infuriate you when the locals switched to English right away? People seem to forget the locals are not obligated to help you practice your language skills (there are always native speakers you can pay to practice your language skills with). How can you feel so entitled to a German conversation when their English is better than your German and speaking in English will save them time (you are using up their time!!!)? If you really want to practice, get out of Berlin and find someone older. The virtue of "not bringing unnecessary trouble to others" is so neglected these days.
I'm an American in Berlin. I'm still at level A 2/2, because having two young children slowed the learning process. I can't tell you how encouraging this video is, particularly when you are feeling slumped with the language. It's so nice to hear this kind of support. hallo! I am the same.....around the same level as you and although I've been studying German for years, never seem to get past A2-B1. Although I'm 'middle aged" in years, I can be reduced to feeling like a five year old when my German relatives talk amongst themselves or with German friends. Most frustrating!! Ja, stimmt! Ich bin Deutsche und ich bin seit 10 Monaten in Kanada. In my last visit to Germany, I found if I asked for a menu 'auf Deutsch' and ordered in German, the waiters tended to try to speak German with me, even if I struggled a bit.
I remember, off the plane I just arrived in Munich and was very hungry. went to a restaurant and i was trying to speak German and the waitress was so patient and i apologized for my bad German. She was being so kind that she was making the effort to put my Anxiety at rest.

After a year of study and listening to these videos and the wider channel, I was able to watch the whole thing without looking down once!! Wendi Gong das stimmt/ist korrekt, man merkt die Fehler nicht. Alleine laut sprechen hilft nur, um einen schnellen Start beim Reden zu lernen, keine Hemmung zu haben, einfach zu beginnen zu reden. There is no elegant word for talking to oneself, there is one, but makes complicated sentence (don't be annoyed that this is an example how complicated and unlogical German is): ...wenn Fehler beim Selbstgespräch auftreten ODER ...wenn Fehler auftreten, wenn man mit sich selber spricht. Ich spreche, du sprichst, er spricht ... er spricht mit sich selber/selbst (selber or selbst is fine) BUT IN THE if-CLAUSE THE WORDS "er spricht mit sich selber" GET'S DIFFERENTLY SORTED: wenn er mit sich selber spricht ..... man merkt nicht, wenn Fehler auftreten, wenn man mit sich selber spricht (NO BEGINNER NEEDS TO KNOW THIS; NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) There is no reason, why "Selbstunterhaltung" doesn't exist despite it is logical and every German would understand what you mean, but unfortunately it's only "Selbstgespräch". Bei mein Besuch in Ulm, habe ich ein Kellner in Deutsch gefragt ein Bier zu Empfehlen. Er hat mir in English geantwortet. Habe ich noch mal in Deutsch gesprochen, erklären dass ich muss Deutsch lernen, und er hat mir ein Freibier gegeben. Wer hat gesagt dass die Deutsche nicht nett sind? :)
He gave you the bier to calm you down (supposedly to apologize for cutting you off from the opportunity to learn Deutsch through his response in English), not that he awarded you for learning Deutsch or else. It has nothing to do with Deutsch but with customer service and managing complaints, that you erroneously/ignorantly interpret as Deutsch niceness. He acted upon rules. Nein, Deutsche sind nicht nett. If you want to experience nice and kind people try all countries around Deutschland, but not Deutschland (nor Belgium).
I am currently learning German for 2 months now, and everything you said rings true for me! I spoke English most of my life, my mother tongue less so since i moved overseas 16 years ago. My goal is to speak passable German within a year, by October. I am learning a lot of words and rules now, but it does overwhelm me sometimes. Thanks for the tips!
Great video! I found in Munich when I tried to speak German the Germans heard my accent and immediately spoke English. In Austria, the Austrians would let me speak German and seemed happy I made the effort
I needed this video so much right now! I moved to Stuttgart just a month ago and I learned German formally for four years plus teacher assisting and continued casual study. Four years later now, living here really tests my skills and I can't help but get anxious and embarrassed when I can't say something or my speech is corrected in casual or formal settings. I'm finally getting to the point of accepting the situation and powering through it. Great timing for this video!!
I find it helps me to remember that other people are also nervous when they try to speak, and they also make mistakes. I do not mind when they make mistakes, so I remind myself that they probably do not mind when I mistakes either, as long as I am friendly and respectful. Thank you for this excellent video!
ja das ist mir mal passiert... ich war in einem Restaurant und der Kellner hat mir eine Speisekarte gegeben, mich durchgesehen und hat an mir Englisch gesprochen (ich bin asiatisch)... das machte mir natürlich wütend weil ich Deutsch sprechen konnte (auch wenn nicht fließend)!!! Dann habe ich an ihm einfach gesagt, "ich spreche kein Englisch"
Seit schon quasi 5 Jahren lerne ich Deutsch und ich habe mich wirklich in diese Sprache verliebt! Meine Muttersprache ist Spanisch -ich komme aus Chile- und wie ich mich in sozialen Situationen benehme, hängt ja von der Sprache ab! I think, it's only problem in bigger cities, because in Bayern I was in a village and they didn't say anything in English, but they loved to talk a lot, doesn't matter, if I understood or not :D It was so sweet

Noch ein Problem ist, dass die Deutschen mich immer nicht lassen, meine Sätze zu beenden 😂 deshalb muss ich sehr schnell sprechen, sodass sie mich nicht unterbrechen können 😂
Ja, das ist auch eines der Gründe, der mich unter Druck setzt, jedes mal ich mit Deutschen spreche. Ich habe immer das Gefühl, dass niemand genug Geduld hat, mir zuzuhören. (das ist aber nur meine Gedanke und sie könnte absolut falsch sein). Deswegen versuche ich immer schnell wie möglich meinen Satz zu beenden und mich wenig um Grammatik beim Sprechen zu kümmern. Das ist ja ganz schlecht für mein Deutschlernen. Was sollte ich machen, um diese schädliche Gewöhnheit zu ändern? 😩
Die Lösung ist ganz einfach. Direktheit ist in Deutschland kein Problem. Bitte dein Gegenüber einfach, dich ausreden zu lassen. Du kannst ruhig sagen, dass du nicht gerne unterbrochen wirst, weil dir damit die Gelegenheit genommen wird, deinen Gedanken zu Ende zu bringen. Außerdem fühlst du dich nicht ernst genommen. Das sollte für eine kleine Weile für Ruhe bei deinem Gesprächsparter führen, weil er oder sie gerade auf ihre Unhöflichkeit aufmerksam gemacht wurde ;)
Jaaaaa! Diese Situation passiert bei mir fast jeder Tag. Ich sage nur haelfte meines Satzes, dann haben die Deutschen schon geantwortet.😂 Aber manchmal moechte ich nur muendlicher Ausdruck ueben.

Jaja. Nice video I study Spanish and it’s really showed me how studying languages can be easy. My grandfather is German and I’ve been studying my German. I can say a bunch of sentences, and so far it’s been a month of studying.

genau, viele Deutschen wechseln sehr schnell zum Englisch, wenn sie nur ein bisschen von einem Akzent hören. das ist mir sehr häufig in Berlin passiert. manche wechseln dazu, weil sie wollen, dass du dich wohler im Gespräch fühlst. es ist zwar gut gemeint, aber immer noch frustrierend, wenn man sein Deutsch verbessern will. als ich in Leipzig gewohnt habe, ist das mir aber nicht so oft passiert. viele Deutschen, die ich in Leipzig begegnet bin, haben selbst Angst English zu sprechen, insbesonders die Alten, die nie an der Schule in der DDR Englisch gelernt haben. deswegen fand ich Leipzig einen tollen Ort Deutsch zu lernen. deine Videos sind für mich immer so hilfreich beim Deutschlernen. danke für deine harte Arbeit. ich würde gern mit euch treffen , wenn ich nach Deutschland zurückkehre. liebe Grüße aus Amerika :)
Ich glaube das Problem ist auch, dass es für uns manchmal sehr schwierig ist zu verstehen, was jemand sagt, der noch nicht gut und mit starkem Akzent Deutsch spricht. Mir persönlich geht es so und ich versuche dann oft auf Englisch zu wechseln, weil es auch für mich selbst leichter ist, dann mit dieser Person zu sprechen.

I made sure during my last trip to the DE to go into the countryside away from the cities in Rathen. Also if you don't look like a tourist, you're more keen to be spoken to in Deutsch. Finally, I find that in much of Europe, many times the language bounces back and forth between the two, in this case German and English, not sure how effective that is, but I quite enjoy it. I wish I could do the same with friends here in the US
I always pretend not to understand English and ask if we could speak German. Right now we only speak German and it has really helped to improved my language skills.

ich bin Deutscher und traue mich in England oft nicht, an der Bar Essen zu bestellen. Dann, in Deutschland, wenn ich Ausländer sehe, die sich nicht trauen Deutsch zu reden (ich arbeite an einer Universität und sehe viele Studenten aus dem Ausland) dann verstehe ich überhaupt nicht, warum sie nicht einfach selbstbewusst probieren, Deutsch zu reden. WARUM sind sie dann schüchtern? WARUM ist es ihnen peinlich, wenn sie Pausen machen müssen, weil sie ein Wort nicht wissen? ICH FINDE KEINEN GRUND warum sie schüchtern sein sollten oder warum Fehler peinlich sein sollten. Ich denke immer nur "rede doch einfach, einfach mit vielen Fehlern, es ist doch egal, ob es 1, 5 oder 10 Fehler sind in einem Satz, es tut mir nicht weh, es macht kein Problem, es ist doch einfach nur reden!" Wenn man etwas nicht genau versteht, fragt man einfach und irgendwann versteht man, was der andere will. Fertig, easy, null Problemo! Und wenn ich bald wieder in England bin, fühle ich mich auch wieder wie eine kleine Maus, wenn ich im Supermarkt oder im Resautrant bin, hahaha! Wo in England lebst du? Ich bin oft in Bristol, Chepstow und Birmingham.
I am also from England. I find i have quite a lot of confidence to speak to a german teacher or another german learner. As they speak to a level i am comfortable wit. But the germans i already know, or indeed any german that is native, then i have angst speaking to them. Because they speak german fluently on a whole different level.
But Angst comes only if your talking problems would bring you in a situation, where you get stuck, like in a restaurant, if you really couldn't order something in the end or more serious situations where it would be really a problem if you can't give exact informations. So search for a situation with nativ speakers where the talk has no purpose, where you can say "ach, jetzt fehlen mir gerade so viele Worte, ich lasse das Thema mal". I need to do this often when I want to say more complicated interesting things to my English friends but are not able to, that's then frustrating but no problem, because nothing depends on this, it's just talk in leisure time. That there is Angst to talk to native speakers is maybe a cultural problem, as we learn in school, at work, in the job: there is not much tolerance for mistakes. So realise that (nice translation into German: Also mache dir klar, dass...) learning a language is not as serious like jobs at work etc., it's different, learning a language is something free, something generally in a process. And don't forget, German is a really difficult language, really not logical often, so mistakes must occur.

+Mattes Rocket Hallo. I guess I am just naturally a shy person but I can be confident sometimes depending on the situation. And recently I've not been able to practice my German speaking with anyone so I guess I've lost some of my confidence a little bit. Personally it just takes me a little while to become comfortable and relaxed with something new that I am feeling nervous about. I should enrol myself on a German course or hire a tutor to help me further with my German speaking. (I've been learning on my own with the help of books, CDs, RUclips etc) I've only visited Germany once. (Last year in München when meeting my pen friend for the first time) And I'd love to live in Germany for a little while to immerse myself in the language and culture. I am from Nottingham but live in Oxfordshire. :)
It's true that in Germany many Germans will switch to English immediately, but I've found that if I stay the course and not switch to English myself, they'll flip back to German.

I have done a lot of cross-country bicycling in Germany, so I find myself often in small towns overnight. It seems that in the small towns they are much less likely to switch to English on me.
I find these videos quite handy, I can hear the Germen, go back and check the words, but use the English subtitles to understand what is being said. I think this is a key to learning any language, the more exposure, the more you will pick up.

Something I just started to do to overcome my fears is to send voice messages in Deutsch. I have a friend who grew up in Deutschland and I am too nervous to speak German with him in person, but I feel better when I send voice messages because I know I can redo it if I make a mistake.

I like to watch German movies and German videos on RUclips with or without subtitles. I try to follow along as best as I can. Recently I watched the newest Heidi movie because I have the storyline memorized so that made the language barrier less difficult. This is how my Oma learnt English when she moved to Canada 60 years ago.

Dann haben wir das gemacht: mit meinen Kollegen haben wir ein wöchentliches 30-Minuten Meeting gebucht, das wir nur auf Englisch für 25 Minuten gesprochen haben und danach hatten wir 5 Minuten auf Spanisch für Fragen. Bei jedem Meeting hatten wir ein anderes Thema. Das hat mich viel geholfen und Heute kann ich sehr einfach, Englisch zu sprechen. Leider kenne ich nicht viele Leute, die mit mir Deutsch sprechen können :( Ich schreibe ok, aber ich spreche total schlecht.
Hola Eduardo, puedes buscarte un "language partner" en Italki. Es gratuito. Podrías conversar con esta persona media hora en alemán y luego hablar media hora en español. Puedes conversar en Internet, usando Skype. La idea es encontrar a una persona cuya lengua materna es el alemán y que estudie español. Pero creo que es fácil. Hago "intercambios lingüisticos" francés/alemán y es algo que me ha ayudado bastante. Saludos.

You don't need to be nervous. Even though I am not from Germany but from Austria, I know that when you speak to locals they don't care how good or bad your German is. Because all of us know how hard our language is. And also when you speak in class you just need to remember: when your German is bad and you just say some random shit that wasn't even the question you tried to answer, your classmates probably don't even notice it

@@fmhazgar Mach dir keine Sorgen. Es gibt in Deutschland Menschen, die hier seit 20+ Jahren leben. Diese Menschen machen auch nach so langer Zeit noc hdie gleichen Fehler. Es gibt auch Kinder von Immigranten, die in Deutschland geboren sind. Manche machen trotzdem Fehler bei den Artikeln oder in der Grammatik. Deutsch ist einfach schwer zu lernen, aber man kann dich trotzdem sehr gut verstehen.

The subtitles are still in german, so i don't feel too bad about needing them. It's a natural progression for me: Developping listening skills comes always later. For now, my brain/ear can hear well only the few sporadic words i know, but the more words i'll learn to write and to pronounce myself, the easier my brain will hear them when other poeple say them. 😅 For now, i'm more than half deaf.

I practice German (and all other languages I have studied) by talking to myself while I walk. I give a running commentary to myself about all that I am seeing or doing. This gives me ample opportunity to practice the same sentences over and over again to make them smoother, with no pressure of an audience. Afterwards, the smoothness carries over to real situations.

Every time I go to Berlin, the locals do as you say; they speak to me in English when I speak to them in German. It's infuriating. I just kindly say, "Auf Deutsch, bitte. Ich möchte (mein) Deutsch üben." Then they smile and say "Ok" and speak to me only in German. Now I know an even more polite way to make the same request. Danke sehr!!

Berlin is a special case. Things are different in a small city thats not international or so full of tourists.
This is my biggest frustration when I visit Berlin - where my partner’s family is from (and nearby as well). EVERY single time I start to speak German (even if I haven’t said anything incorrectly, they just hear I’m not native) they switch to English and it makes me want to rip my hair out. Whenever we visit Berlin, I’m desperately trying to use the opportunity to practice my German. Cari hit the nail on the head with this. It is probably the single biggest frustration for people who go to Germany hoping to try to speak with natives. The tips are brilliant. I am definitely going to memorise a few standard sentences. That will really help :) My last comment is: I also speak Polish and it is a very difficult language to speak - so way to go Cari! Lastly, sometimes it doesn’t help me either because I try and do things in German that work only in Polish, so it messes me up. Knowing one hard language doesn’t always help you learn another. Haha :D
just remember the times you visit other foreign countries when you can only say "hello" and "thank you" in the local language; did it infuriate you when the locals switched to English right away? People seem to forget the locals are not obligated to help you practice your language skills (there are always native speakers you can pay to practice your language skills with). How can you feel so entitled to a German conversation when their English is better than your German and speaking in English will save them time (you are using up their time!!!)? If you really want to practice, get out of Berlin and find someone older. The virtue of "not bringing unnecessary trouble to others" is so neglected these days.
I'm an American in Berlin. I'm still at level A 2/2, because having two young children slowed the learning process. I can't tell you how encouraging this video is, particularly when you are feeling slumped with the language. It's so nice to hear this kind of support. hallo! I am the same.....around the same level as you and although I've been studying German for years, never seem to get past A2-B1. Although I'm 'middle aged" in years, I can be reduced to feeling like a five year old when my German relatives talk amongst themselves or with German friends. Most frustrating!! Ja, stimmt! Ich bin Deutsche und ich bin seit 10 Monaten in Kanada. In my last visit to Germany, I found if I asked for a menu 'auf Deutsch' and ordered in German, the waiters tended to try to speak German with me, even if I struggled a bit.

Wendi Gong das stimmt/ist korrekt, man merkt die Fehler nicht. Alleine laut sprechen hilft nur, um einen schnellen Start beim Reden zu lernen, keine Hemmung zu haben, einfach zu beginnen zu reden. There is no elegant word for talking to oneself, there is one, but makes complicated sentence (don't be annoyed that this is an example how complicated and unlogical German is): ...wenn Fehler beim Selbstgespräch auftreten ODER ...wenn Fehler auftreten, wenn man mit sich selber spricht.
Ich spreche, du sprichst, er spricht ... er spricht mit sich selber/selbst (selber or selbst is fine) BUT IN THE if-CLAUSE THE WORDS "er spricht mit sich selber" GET'S DIFFERENTLY SORTED:
wenn er mit sich selber spricht
..... man merkt nicht, wenn Fehler auftreten, wenn man mit sich selber spricht (NO BEGINNER NEEDS TO KNOW THIS; NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
There is no reason, why "Selbstunterhaltung" doesn't exist despite it is logical and every German would understand what you mean, but unfortunately it's only "Selbstgespräch".
More to the word Gespräch (the talk), it's complicated: if it's about the act of talking, it always kommes with "führen", "ein Gespräch führen" - it's how we Germans obviously feel it: we guide (führen) a talk, guide through topics, but if you think about the talk about something that happened, so not about the acting but the situation of a talk THEN you connect Gespräch with "haben": Ich habe (or) Ich hatte um 13 Uhr ein Gespräch mit meinem Chef. Or Gestern hatte ich mit meinem Vater ein Gespräch über die Familiensituation BUT Gestern führte ich mit meinem Vater ein langes Gespräch darüber, warum ich und mein Bruder uns nie einig sind. Or Ich führe gerne Gespräche über Philosophie.

*einem - not easy to translate, it's a bit like "somebody" or a mixture of you and somebody, it means a general person but like "you", but general. And, this word "einem" has MORE OTHER meanings:

you see in this context "einem" means ein/1
but in addition "einem" can mean somebody or one:

es kann einem egal sein, wenn der andere vergisst... = (I don't know, maybe) you don't need to fuss about, if the other forgets...

Beim Schreiben gibt es gar kein Problem. Die Zeit fürs Überlegen reicht aus. Die Fehler sind mithilfe vom Wörterbuch zu beseitigen.
Aber beim Sprechen, insbesondere beim alltäglichen Gespräch ohne vorherige Vorbereitung ist es ganz anders...Kommt hier Akkusativ oder Dativ dran? Ist das ein reflexives Verb oder ein normales? Was ist die Aktion von meinem Nebensatz (wenn ich einen Satz zum Ende bringe, habe ich das Verb schon vergessen...)? ...zahlreiche Probleme...TAT

It has nothing to do with Deutsch but with customer service and managing complaints, that you erroneously/ignorantly interpret as Deutsch niceness. He acted upon rules. Nein, Deutsche sind nicht nett. If you want to experience nice and kind people try all countries around Deutschland, but not Deutschland (nor Belgium).

I am currently learning German for 2 months now, and everything you said rings true for me! I spoke English most of my life, my mother tongue less so since i moved overseas 16 years ago. My goal is to speak passable German within a year, by October. I am learning a lot of words and rules now, but it does overwhelm me sometimes. Thanks for the tips!

Great video! I found in Munich when I tried to speak German the Germans heard my accent and immediately spoke English. In Austria, the Austrians would let me speak German and seemed happy I made the effort

I needed this video so much right now! I moved to Stuttgart just a month ago and I learned German formally for four years plus teacher assisting and continued casual study. Four years later now, living here really tests my skills and I can't help but get anxious and embarrassed when I can't say something or my speech is corrected in casual or formal settings. I'm finally getting to the point of accepting the situation and powering through it. Great timing for this video!!
I find it helps me to remember that other people are also nervous when they try to speak, and they also make mistakes. I do not mind when they make mistakes, so I remind myself that they probably do not mind when I mistakes either, as long as I am friendly and respectful. Thank you for this excellent video!

ja das ist mir mal passiert... ich war in einem Restaurant und der Kellner hat mir eine Speisekarte gegeben, mich durchgesehen und hat an mir Englisch gesprochen (ich bin asiatisch)... das machte mir natürlich wütend weil ich Deutsch sprechen konnte (auch wenn nicht fließend)!!! Dann habe ich an ihm einfach gesagt, "ich spreche kein Englisch"
Seit schon quasi 5 Jahren lerne ich Deutsch und ich habe mich wirklich in diese Sprache verliebt! Meine Muttersprache ist Spanisch -ich komme aus Chile- und wie ich mich in sozialen Situationen benehme, hängt ja von der Sprache ab! Eure Videos äußern, was ich von dieser schönen Sprache bemerkt und gelernt habe 😊

Ja, das ist auch eines der Gründe, der mich unter Druck setzt, jedes mal ich mit Deutschen spreche. Ich habe immer das Gefühl, dass niemand genug Geduld hat, mir zuzuhören. (das ist aber nur meine Gedanke und sie könnte absolut falsch sein). Deswegen versuche ich immer schnell wie möglich meinen Satz zu beenden und mich wenig um Grammatik beim Sprechen zu kümmern. Das ist ja ganz schlecht für mein Deutschlernen. Was sollte ich machen, um diese schädliche Gewöhnheit zu ändern? 😩
Die Lösung ist ganz einfach. Direktheit ist in Deutschland kein Problem.
Bitte dein Gegenüber einfach, dich ausreden zu lassen.
Du kannst ruhig sagen, dass du nicht gerne unterbrochen wirst, weil dir damit die Gelegenheit genommen wird, deinen Gedanken zu Ende zu bringen. Außerdem fühlst du dich nicht ernst genommen.
Das sollte für eine kleine Weile für Ruhe bei deinem Gesprächsparter führen, weil er oder sie gerade auf ihre Unhöflichkeit aufmerksam gemacht wurde ;)

Jaja. Nice video I study Spanish and it’s really showed me how studying languages can be easy. My grandfather is German and I’ve been studying my German. I can say a bunch of sentences, and so far it’s been a month of studying.

genau, viele Deutschen wechseln sehr schnell zum Englisch, wenn sie nur ein bisschen von einem Akzent hören. das ist mir sehr häufig in Berlin passiert. manche wechseln dazu, weil sie wollen, dass du dich wohler im Gespräch fühlst. es ist zwar gut gemeint, aber immer noch frustrierend, wenn man sein Deutsch verbessern will. als ich in Leipzig gewohnt habe, ist das mir aber nicht so oft passiert. viele Deutschen, die ich in Leipzig begegnet bin, haben selbst Angst English zu sprechen, insbesonders die Alten, die nie an der Schule in der DDR Englisch gelernt haben. deswegen fand ich Leipzig einen tollen Ort Deutsch zu lernen.
deine Videos sind für mich immer so hilfreich beim Deutschlernen. danke für deine harte Arbeit. ich würde gern mit euch treffen , wenn ich nach Deutschland zurückkehre.

Ich glaube das Problem ist auch, dass es für uns manchmal sehr schwierig ist zu verstehen, was jemand sagt, der noch nicht gut und mit starkem Akzent Deutsch spricht. Mir persönlich geht es so und ich versuche dann oft auf Englisch zu wechseln, weil es auch für mich selbst leichter ist, dann mit dieser Person zu sprechen.

I made sure during my last trip to the DE to go into the countryside away from the cities in Rathen. Also if you don't look like a tourist, you're more keen to be spoken to in Deutsch. Finally, I find that in much of Europe, many times the language bounces back and forth between the two, in this case German and English, not sure how effective that is, but I quite enjoy it. I wish I could do the same with friends here in the US
I'm learning slowly. It's just so hard to remember so much.

I definitely find it really difficult to speak in German to German native speakers. I just get really shy and have no confidence but I am going to make a huge effort to change that.

ich bin Deutscher und traue mich in England oft nicht, an der Bar Essen zu bestellen. Dann, in Deutschland, wenn ich Ausländer sehe, die sich nicht trauen Deutsch zu reden (ich arbeite an einer Universität und sehe viele Studenten aus dem Ausland) dann verstehe ich überhaupt nicht, warum sie nicht einfach selbstbewusst probieren, Deutsch zu reden. WARUM sind sie dann schüchtern? WARUM ist es ihnen peinlich, wenn sie Pausen machen müssen, weil sie ein Wort nicht wissen? ICH FINDE KEINEN GRUND warum sie schüchtern sein sollten oder warum Fehler peinlich sein sollten. Ich denke immer nur "rede doch einfach, einfach mit vielen Fehlern, es ist doch egal, ob es 1, 5 oder 10 Fehler sind in einem Satz, es tut mir nicht weh, es macht kein Problem, es ist doch einfach nur reden!" Wenn man etwas nicht genau versteht, fragt man einfach und irgendwann versteht man, was der andere will. Fertig, easy, null Problemo! Und wenn ich bald wieder in England bin, fühle ich mich auch wieder wie eine kleine Maus, wenn ich im Supermarkt oder im Resautrant bin, hahaha! Wo in England lebst du? Ich bin oft in Bristol, Chepstow und Birmingham.
I am also from England. I find i have quite a lot of confidence to speak to a german teacher or another german learner. As they speak to a level i am comfortable wit. But the germans i already know, or indeed any german that is native, then i have angst speaking to them. Because they speak german fluently on a whole different level.
But Angst comes only if your talking problems would bring you in a situation, where you get stuck, like in a restaurant, if you really couldn't order something in the end or more serious situations where it would be really a problem if you can't give exact informations. So search for a situation with nativ speakers where the talk has no purpose, where you can say "ach, jetzt fehlen mir gerade so viele Worte, ich lasse das Thema mal". I need to do this often when I want to say more complicated interesting things to my English friends but are not able to, that's then frustrating but no problem, because nothing depends on this, it's just talk in leisure time. That there is Angst to talk to native speakers is maybe a cultural problem, as we learn in school, at work, in the job: there is not much tolerance for mistakes. So realise that (nice translation into German: Also mache dir klar, dass...) learning a language is not as serious like jobs at work etc., it's different, learning a language is something free, something generally in a process. And don't forget, German is a really difficult language, really not logical often, so mistakes must occur.

I guess I am just naturally a shy person but I can be confident sometimes depending on the situation. And recently I've not been able to practice my German speaking with anyone so I guess I've lost some of my confidence a little bit.
Personally it just takes me a little while to become comfortable and relaxed with something new that I am feeling nervous about.
I should enrol myself on a German course or hire a tutor to help me further with my German speaking. (I've been learning on my own with the help of books, CDs, RUclips etc)
I've only visited Germany once. (Last year in München when meeting my pen friend for the first time) And I'd love to live in Germany for a little while to immerse myself in the language and culture.
I am from Nottingham but live in Oxfordshire. :)

It's true that in Germany many Germans will switch to English immediately, but I've found that if I stay the course and not switch to English myself, they'll flip back to German.

I have done a lot of cross-country bicycling in Germany, so I find myself often in small towns overnight. It seems that in the small towns they are much less likely to switch to English on me.
I find these videos quite handy, I can hear the Germen, go back and check the words, but use the English subtitles to understand what is being said. I think this is a key to learning any language, the more exposure, the more you will pick up.

Something I just started to do to overcome my fears is to send voice messages in Deutsch. I have a friend who grew up in Deutschland and I am too nervous to speak German with him in person, but I feel better when I send voice messages because I know I can redo it if I make a mistake.

I like to watch German movies and German videos on RUclips with or without subtitles. I try to follow along as best as I can. Recently I watched the newest Heidi movie because I have the storyline memorized so that made the language barrier less difficult. This is how my Oma learnt English when she moved to Canada 60 years ago.

Ich habe Englisch als Kind gelernt, aber dann habe ich wenig geübt, Englisch zu sprechen. Nach der Uni, in meiner erste Arbeit, musste ich viel Englisch sprechen und ich war immer nervös. Dann haben wir das gemacht: mit meinen Kollegen haben wir ein wöchentliches 30-Minuten Meeting gebucht, das wir nur auf Englisch für 25 Minuten gesprochen haben und danach hatten wir 5 Minuten auf Spanisch für Fragen. Bei jedem Meeting hatten wir ein anderes Thema. Das hat mich viel geholfen und Heute kann ich sehr einfach, Englisch zu sprechen.
Leider kenne ich nicht viele Leute, die mit mir Deutsch sprechen können :( Ich schreibe ok, aber ich spreche total schlecht.
Hola Eduardo, puedes buscarte un "language partner" en Italki. Es gratuito. Podrías conversar con esta persona media hora en alemán y luego hablar media hora en español. Puedes conversar en Internet, usando Skype. La idea es encontrar a una persona cuya lengua materna es el alemán y que estudie español. Pero creo que es fácil. Hago "intercambios lingüisticos" francés/alemán y es algo que me ha ayudado bastante. Saludos.

When I speak german I always feel like i can‘t be ‘me’ and that i completely change my personality and all! I am speaking good but sometimes you come across things that do get you down and nervous! You don't need to be nervous. Even though I am not from Germany but from Austria, I know that when you speak to locals they don't care how good or bad your German is. Because all of us know how hard our language is. And also when you speak in class you just need to remember: when your German is bad and you just say some random shit that wasn't even the question you tried to answer, your classmates probably don't even notice it

Ich sehe bei mir wie alles so schwierig ist, auch jetzt wenn ich die Schule angefangen habe...ich bin die einzige Ausländer von meiner Klasse und fühle mich auch auserseite, viele von meinen Kollegen sprechen überhaupt auch kein richtiges Hochdeutsch ( sie reden Dialekt), egal ob ich ihnen sage ( " Entschuldigung, ich habe das nicht verstanden "). Wenn ich mit denen spreche, ich fühle mich auch unterdrück, sie haben kein Geduld mich zuhören und mir vielleicht auch helfen richtig zu sprechen, korrigieren.

@@fmhazgar Mach dir keine Sorgen. Es gibt in Deutschland Menschen, die hier seit 20+ Jahren leben. Diese Menschen machen auch nach so langer Zeit noc hdie gleichen Fehler. Es gibt auch Kinder von Immigranten, die in Deutschland geboren sind. Manche machen trotzdem Fehler bei den Artikeln oder in der Grammatik. Deutsch ist einfach schwer zu lernen, aber man kann dich trotzdem sehr gut verstehen.
