Ilya, so proud that someone came out with Halal Bak Chang. Glad everyone can enjoy the tradition whether Malay or Chinese. Just like it was great to see Bak Chor Mee - Halal. Why not, vinegar noodle, sauce, fish cake etc.. glad some cook innovatively create just like the right blend of sauce and seasoning to make this happen. I will definitely check the Bak Chang when I am back again in Singapore. Just like chinese loh bak, malay can make their version of it, but have to find the right meat but can still enjoy the cinnamon bark. star anisee, cinnamon clove, with toufu with hard boil egg, would definitely sample that a halal version of it. Thank for introducing your mom's recipe.

Glad you finally get to taste some great Malay cuisines. I knew you'll like the Ayam Masak Lemak Cili Padi because it's creamy and spicy. The Paru Goreng is great too! Sambal Goreng is a must dish, my personal favorite is Nasi Sambal Goreng at any Malay hawker stalls. Eating food with your fingers takes a lot of practice you almost got it, unglamorous is actually right lol!

Hajah Maimunah serve really delicious authentic malay dishes because it taste just like how my mum cooks. It's worth the price. I used to get halal Bak Chang at pasar Geylang now I'm interested to order some from Ilya. The fried bak chang looks delicious! 🤤
Ben is right, my dad used to bring me to Malacca at the Portuguese village to eat there and my late grandmother is half Portuguese. Their salted egg crab and butter garlic prawns are to die for! Not the same as how Singapore cook it. It's much more flavorful and leaves me craving everytime I think about it. I only get Chilli crab in Singapore and Salted egg chicken. The Sambal stingray is also good but I still prefer the one I eat in Malaysia. 🙃

Chinese rice dumpling was created in honor of a legendary figure in China's history: the poet Qu Yuan (340 B.C. to 278 B.C.)
Famous for pioneering the art in ancient China, Qu Yuan was also a beloved minister and a former advisor to the King. But he was banished by the King after corrupt officials slandered Qu Yuan's name.
Even in exile, Qu Yuan continued to write some of the greatest poetry in Chinese literature expressing concern for his country and people.
But unfortunately, his home town was invaded in 278 B.C.
Striken with grief, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the famous Ni Lo River. Although the people rushed to the river to rescue their beloved minister, they were too late.
Instead, they paddled out in boats and furiously threw packets of steamed rice wrapped in leaves to prevent the sea creatures from consuming Qu Yuan's body.

Just a correction of the Bak Chang history / legend. There was a govt official by name of Qu Yuan。He was a poet & politician and a righteous man but was not appreciated by the emperor of the Chu State (during the warring state era) who favors many evil & corrupt officials. He became disillusion and depressed and committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River. The common villagers respected him and didn’t want his corpse be eaten by fishes. So they made bak chang load on boats and threw them into the river. This event is then subsequently celebrated on the 5th day 5th month of the lunar calendar. And hence the dragon boat festival also started.
