  • Recently, I've been noticing my very old California Duster is no longer picking up dust, but rather just smearing it around. That's not acceptable, and I try a method to get it picking up dust, and pollen, once again! Will I be successful? Mileage may vary.
Remember to use cool water for this process, hot water will definitely mess up the wax coating on the fibers.

Thank you! I just used the duster today, and still working perfectly. Wasn't my best parking day. I could've gotten two sheets of paper between the bumper, and wall.

Thanks! No additional wax was needed, as the hair dryer wicked out plenty. It's still working perfectly, since this video was made two years ago. Perhaps next time it needs cleaning, I will need to add additional spray wax.

Could I use a blow dryer even in its dry state just to lengthen the life of it? Like after each use?

Probably wouldn't hurt anything if it's not too dirty.

air compressor is best, but honestly, a plushy microfibre with a high lubricity quick detailer will give you much better results nowadays and risks much less damage to your clear coat.

I would not use Dawn or other dishwashing liquid. They contain degreasers, will remove the wax impregnated in the fabric.

That's why I used _very_ little, just needed a surfactant to reduce the surface tension of my water. Two drops in five gallons of cool water, is nowhere near enough to strip out the wax from the fibers. If anything, it wicked some fresh wax to the surface of the fibers. Ever since this video, my California Duster is working perfectly, and I use it all the time.

PH neutral car wash doesn't strip wax coatings from cars but still debrides dust.@@dynatrak in saying that, these dusters are a little outdated nowadays with how readily available high gsm plushy microfibres with a 70/30 blend are. Get some of those and a high lubricity quick detailers like Meguiar's waterless wash and wax. You will be protecting your car and not risking any marring or micro scratching like you get with the old dusters. Look at the Rag Company, they are market leaders in microfibre right now.

@@GabrielGarcia-bf2kn The OP is referring to removing the wax in the duster fibers, not a car. I've always used PH balanced car washes for my vehicle washes, and quick detailer spray for in between waxings.
Never had an issue with scratches using this duster, since it is taken care of, and stored properly. Just use common sense on when it is appropriate to use, or not.
I've owned my '04 Silverado for 20 years, and the original paint is still as glossy as it was when new. No clear coat issues anywhere, not even on the roof.
Any of the above linens will scratch, if not kept clean, and maintained. Around here, outdated is the norm.

Fair enough, I was talking about neutral shampoo for cleaning the duster, regardless, I agree in that you want to make sure you are using clean microfibres, ideally washed with microfibre detergent. Looking at it more closely, I can see the use case for the duster is probably for show room cars in a garage kind of thing, literally light dusting. That makes sense. Thanks@@dynatrak

@@GabrielGarcia-bf2kn Your comment: "PH neutral car wash doesn't strip wax coatings from cars but still debrides dust," didn't read like you were talking about cleaning the duster! Perhaps you meant duster instead of cars.
Yep, I'm a huge advocate of taking good care of what I have, since everything is expensive.
Good idea for a wash video, to show how I wash my microfiber towels!
