Cold Steel SRK, what can it take?

  • So yeah, we broke the handle, but the knife was still 100% useable and we will be making a new handle for it shortly. Again, we usually respect our knives a lot more than this but we wanted to see what this knife could take so that we can give honest and firsthand tested advice on this knife. Truly amazed at what this knife can take and now trust these blades more than ever, highly recommend these knives to anyone looking to get a well priced and very strong fixed blade.

    That was pretty impressive - I have a Recon Scout and always wondered what the TANG really looked like. Cold Steel doesn't have a clue about explaining in detail about the Tang - I asked and asked and got totally vague answers - not even a sketch. So this vid is great - shows great vertical endurance and finally I see a Tang!! There was some serious horizontal stress on the blade as well when those huge rounds were thrown down on it - clearly there was horizontal stress on the blade there too! THANKS!

    Ok I got two things....
    1.) Thank you for not standing in front of the camera yakking about this knife and showing me just what I needed to see... Which is what kind of abuse this thing can take... I too would never treat a knife this way, but a picture or this case a video is worth a thousand words....
    2.) Thanks to your video I'm going to jump over to Amazon and pull the trigger on one!

    Been researching different knives for about 3 weeks now (been at home recovering from melanoma surgery ) have watched and read just about everything on the cheap Chinese all the way up to $1000.00 blades. Just received a package today with a Cold steel SRK (VG-1) and TOPS B.O.B. Looks like I made the right choice!
    I've gotten so tired watching people blah blah blah with the knife on a table ...so boring and mundane. Good job with this video...it was entertaining and very impressive to watch what the SRK can take. Thanks

    There's some knives that are actually brittle, or just have a breaking point or weak spot. However there are others that simply will not break. The steel performs the way you'd think true steel would and shows incredible strength and durability under torturous conditions. When you find a knife that does this its a keeper for sure.

    Good job!
    You can easily cast another handle at home with sanitary sislicone, or if you want a more sturdy one, then you can wrap coton cord in the shape you want and then soak it with epoxy resin. The result will be similar with micarta. I have a video on how to make a sheath like that, but you can extrapolate the method to make the handle. You can also combine the two (i.e. make the home-made micarta handle first, then add some silicone layer on the outisde to give you a softer and confortable grip 👍

      The Carbon V's are excellent. The old Japanese AUS8's like in this video were probably even tougher simply because AUS8 is such a break-resistant stainless whereas Carbon V is slightly more brittle but is easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer.

    "Always wear protective footwear" and the one guy is wearing flip flops LOL Epic. I was worried about where the tang meets the blade. This used to be all square 90 degree corners I believe and I did see them break right there. These corners seem te be rounded of a bit and although I would like to see it even more rounded it still withstood this hard use.

    Nice video, but this has nothing to do with the usage of the knife. This has everything to do what a 5-6 mm steel rod can take. If you went to the woods, cut a tree, hit a stone, split wood, made a camp fire, looked at the carry weight, saw whether it rusts, then I would call this a test. Any tops knives, or Busse, Mtech copy or you name it, with similar size steel and heat treat could take similar beating. But at the end, it is a knife, not an axe or steel rod.

    Say Heah M8, We went out to a private area, as we scouted around actually horse played my buddy busted his leg, it was cold and we sort of new there was a cabin down yonder, But it was a seasonal cabin I think a hunting cabin, But I broke in because of the emergency and then went for help, Lucky I like carrying a large knife small knife and the combo I was using was my Cold Steel which I have several combos like my Master Hunter in San Mai 3 and my Kukuri Plus in O1 but I had my CarbonV S.R.K and my Recon Scout and believe it or not my Mini Pendleton in VG-1, anyhow I broke in and left my friend who was in alot of pain and went for help. We never got charged for trespassing, but we had to pay for the damage. I don't have a S.R.K. in AUS8, but I do have the Recon Tanto I'm it and in CarbonV that I got ripped off buying off e-bay I was sold a second and the lines are off but it still is usable and that's my beater it still holds a good edge, and I like my San Mai 3 Recon Tanto that's a nice looking knifr, Anyhow the Recon Tanto I use it to baton wood and also use it with my San Mai 3 Master Hunter I like that Combo, But my vintage Trailmaster which I bought in 1990 and didn't know what I was buying and infact I never heard of Cold steel then, I got a beauty, they don't make them like they use to, I have a video where Lynn Thompson claims it to be the strongest knife in tge world custom or productiom, I also use it with the Master Hunter and the Mini Pendleton, that little knife is wort it's weight in gold, I use it alot. This video is one of the best videos I ever seen reviewing a knife, I still enjoy watching it, Thanx a Google M8.

    Have had mime for about 8 years or so.
    I've used it camping and fishing a lot in that time. I stabbed it into a phone book for my brother to see. I'm sure it was well over 2" deep. I've stabbed threw pennies and quarters. This blade has taken a beating and with some good oil stones I can shave with it this very moment. The only thing that has ever happened... The handle is slightly loose like very little but can feel it. I think it's just from abuse over the years. Still a great knife.

    • @jeddfarley
      @jeddfarley 9 лет назад

      My SRK is Aus8 steel. It's a good working steel and can take some abuse. It's fairly easy to sharpen too. I like it. I think I've put a tiny chip or fold in it before but I hit the ground. Rocks or whatever. I took that out in 30minutes on a some stones. It can hold a good edge for a bit. I've used it daily camping and made 2 Bowdrill sets at once. It could still shave. I use this knife all the time just because I can lol. I keep my UWK CarbonV as backup. That's some good steel too. Harder to sharpen but dam it last longer for sure.

    If there was a version of the SRK with a metal lower guard and a metal handle that completely followed the outline of the rubber grips, I'd buy 3 and just be done with it. Still, I love my VG-1 version of the SRK.

    I've never seen a COLD STEEL SRK made with AUS8. I have them from the 90s made from Sharon steels 0170-6 (carbon V) and later the sk5 which is said to be 1084, and CPM 3V

    • @MB-jg4tr
      @MB-jg4tr 7 месяцев назад

      0170-6 is the steel makers classification, 50100-B is the AISI designation. It's basically 1095CV-N (nickel added). Sharon Steel did an amazing job producing & heat treating their steel. My original carbonV SRK is one of the toughest knives I've ever used.
      The SK in SK-5 stands for Steel Kogu (Tool Steel). SK-5 is close to American 1084 and W2 in composition but often has other alloys added. SK-85 is the new JIS name for SK5. It's AISI name is W108 steel. Basic Composition: 0.80-0.90 Carbon (C), 0.00-0.30 Chromium (Cr), 0.10-0.50 Manganese (Mn), 0.00-0.25 Nickel (Ni), 0.10-0.25 Silicon (Si), 0.00-0.25 Copper (Cu), 0.03 Phosphorus (P), 0.003 Sulfur (S). As quenched, it has a hardness near Rc 65 and produces a mixture of carbon rich martensite with some small undissolved carbides.

      @@MB-jg4trIs SK5 good tho? As good or better than AUS8, and / or carbon v ??

    • @MB-jg4tr
      @MB-jg4tr 3 месяца назад

      @@adods9824 SK5 is good steel. For the price, it's hard to beat, and you'd have to really beat it up to harm it. The new SRK in this steel has a hollow grind, which makes the tip thinner than previous models. Cold Steel also heat treats their SK5 steel very hard, which gives it good edge retention, but also makes the tip more brittle. So the tip on the SK5 version is more prone to breaking than on other models. Just don't pry with it too hard or stab car hoods and it will be fine.
      The AUS-8 version is tougher, mainly because of the saber grind design, and it can take more abuse before failure, but it lacks edge holding ability by a long shot. The original CarbonV is still the toughest of the bunch IMO, but it has a large ricasso that a lot of people don't like and New Old Stock is fairly expensive these days. The newest CPM-3V version is outstanding, it's pretty tough and will hold an edge longer than the rest, but it's difficult to sharpen once it does get dull. The 3V version sells at a good price point for the materials if you can manage it, but the SK5 version is definitely enough knife for most people at a great price.

    Wow that was the best abuse test I have ever seen! Unbelieveable how much stress was put through the whole entire knife and still stood up for more. That was a video that truly demonstrates pure abuse, much better than the meat cutting and shoe piercing vids Cold Steel puts out. Thank you very much for that, it was also nice seeing the tang in all its glory. I'm sold...

    My GOD, what a KNIFE !!! If you haven't already, you should submit your video to Cold Steel, I'm sure you would be reimbursed with a new knife, though I don't think you need one :)
