George and Roy did a very good interview together. You need to remember that back in those days (the 80s) their music sold massive amounts of records and CDs, and sold out concerts based on their talent not solely on their appearance. Culture Club didn't just rock, they sounded great doing it. ;-) ;-) ;-)
@@bryanmorgan4929 yah he aged well but I still think it was best in the 80s. He had that young face even though he looks like hes in his,40s now; not 60. Hes always looked young
@@lessismore8533 George has always had a young face. You're right! I believe that George taking care of himself in recent years has helped him stay young-looking.
This is really interesting. It's 1984 and they are doing a interview across the Atlantic and there is no delay. Now in 2023 there is a 5 second delay even on news shows where they aren't accounting for swearing. We've gone backwards in Technology.
@@stevengriffith436 So ironic because nowadays George says the same things about himself being a cartoon back then lol. As far as attention goes remember that George was already dressing up before he was famous. If he wanted attention just to get famous he would’ve waited up until his fame but he didn’t. Ppl never consider maybe there were OTHER reasons (hint hint) he dressed up prior to fame. Plus also these kinds of reactions come with the territory of being an eccentric artist. As I said before history repeats itself. Gaga got the same comments in 2009. Madonna and Bowie in the 80s
Culture Club and Boy George, in particular, encountered such strong, hateful headwinds when they first hit the scene. With all of that "anti" mentality, they stayed with it. They stuck to their philosophy and remained true to themselves. I think they helped change the culture of mentality in America. I was just starting high school when they hit it big here. It's funny, hard rock band members wore more makeup, teased their hair, dyed their hair, wore jewelry and tight clothes. Culture Club was very tame compared to that. Americans always want to point the finger and call blame on someone else. Culture Club is still touring to this day!
I (totally!) remember when they first it the scene! They and Boy George especially wasn’t like anything I had ever seen before. I was just starting the fourth grade when they first came on and I saw them on Top of the Pops! Omg he was (is) AMAZING. I heard “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” and I just fell in love,,,I have always loved his individuality and strength of character, absolutely love his humor! And my bed room had a whole wall ,,,later two walls dedicated to just Boy George and Culture Club! Later two and half walls! But yes, this original poster was very right in how people see someone who looks different and they get all up in arms. Like he said, KISS wore TONS of make-up,,,,,,all the heavy metal bands,,,,,,the “hair bands” all wore make-up. Brett Michaels wore TONS of eye liner,,,that’s where the term “guy liner” came from,,,,,,all the heavy metal bands,,,,a lot of the hard rock bands and musicians all had long hair,,,a lot of the New Wave bands did too,,,,Simon LeBon,,,had long hair and wore make up,,,Mick Jagger had long hair and wore make-up,,,,,Rod Stewart,,,,,had long hair and wore make-up,,,,,even Bono had long hair and wore some make-up,,,, but Boy George was the one who got the negative press about his look. People see someone different and he’s called : “very straaaaaaange”,,,,,”weird”,,,,,,,,,, “abnormal”,,,,,,,,haven’t figured him out yet” and “disgusting” disgusting for what biatch??? Because he wares make up? Well,,,YOU ware make up! Because he has long hair? YOU have long Hair too! Because he wares frilly shirts and smocks? Well YOU could take a page or two from him, because YOU look like death warm over!!! Ughhg! I hated it when people ragged on him back in the 1980’s and still do!!! He’s just expressing himself! He’s not hurting anyone,,,he’s not endangering anyone, he’s not organizing a huge riot on Capital Hill, he’s not putting THOUSANDS of innocent children in camps, and separating them from their parents,,,,,,and he doesn’t have like hundreds of court cases filled against him,,,,But he certainly is an icon! And always will be!
