  • Adam Carolla races his '86 Paul Newman Camaro at the 2015 Southern California Historic Sports Car Festival at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The track is set up in the 21-turn Sportscar Roval configuration during this qualifying race.

    Having you comment while watching was nice!
    The way shifts upset the balance of the car is just horrible. I hear that having a big v8 (large rotating mass) is a lot harder to shift smoothly than say a small four cylinder. Do you think that was the case here? Could you rev match at all?

      oyurcha1 He obviously couldn't, otherwise you wouldn't hear tire screeching on almost every single downshift. The difference is just that bigger engines have more internal friction and hence rev up and down to idle within a second in racing modification/tune (lightweight flywheel, pistons, rods etc.), so the longer you take to shift, the more critical rev matching becomes. The way he lifts and downshifts steering into the corners, the spin was bound to happen. The engine-brake effect is like a decent pull on the handbrake in a RWD race car like that. Smaller engines have more flywheel and transmission mass relative to the engine rotating mass and friction, which makes them much easier to drive at the limit. A car like this takes even professionals days to get familiar with. They are not fun to jump in and out of for a few hours a weekend.

    Paul Newman just rolled over in his grave watching you drive his car...Just kidding. I understand you are not a professional driver and are having a blast!! Good for you Adam, and thank you for keeping these wonderful pieces of machinery on the track! PS. Get off the clutch faster on those up shifts.

    Get that dialed in and you'll be leaving the others in the dust...looks like the heavy steering and shifting is really making that car a handful on a road course

    I found a pretty "cheap" used stock car back when I was doing a lot of track days back at VIR, almost bought it.

    Well, I'm surprised. Who knew Adam Corolla had a clue about how to drive a car on the track. Not bad, oop wait he just spun. I'd say he and I have about the same skill level. Cheers.

      Kylroyboi Have you ever driven ACS? Everyone spins in T9. Tough corner. OK maybe not everyone, but anyone who's pushing it on that track will get loose there at some point. And he is shaking down a new car, so let's cut him some slack. Except for the shuffle steering. That's inexcusable.

      Im not saying he's a bad driver, I guess I was expecting really bad driving. and I was wrong. His driving wasn't bad at all. He spun there because he experienced tunnel vision on that white car and didn't brake enough. simple as that. As far as driving ACS, Ive been there a handful of times in my mustang, so yea I've spun on that track a handful of times. In fact I have vidoes of my driving ACS up. But that is a tricky corner but surprisingly I have never spun there, mostly because I brake too much there.

      Kylroyboi T9 is the toughest corner at that track. Maybe the only tough corner there.
