As an American, a lot of these products are weird to us too. Companies just keep making stranger and stranger gimmicky products… but people do buy them just to try them so I guess the gimmick works in that sense?

I love seeing how excited you are. Grocery shopping is so much fun in a new country.
I really wouldn't call Publix a health food store lmao. It's like a, mid-tier grocery store in terms of cost? More expensive than Walmart, but far from the most expensive place. Whole Foods is normally the most expensive/health food-ish, then regional chains like Sprouts/Fresh Thyme, then Trader Joes, then grocery stores like Publix/Kroger/Acme, then Walmart. I'd really recommend trying to find a local co-op or farmers market for fresh fruit and vegetables bc it's typically cheaper and more directly benefits farmers. Target is more for home goods than groceries.
I'd say most people do most of their shopping at either Walmart or a grocery chain (for me, Kroger), then get more specific organic/gluten free/vegan/etc. things somewhere else. In my experience, food is slightly more expensive here than in Europe if you're trying to eat healthily.

She cuts up the aloe, simmers it, the applies it to her hair and lets it sit for a while. She says it moisturizes her hair.

It's actually a wonderful thing to see this through the eyes of a person who has not been here his entire life. So many of us don't appreciate what we have here, and seeing your perspective as a new resident is a reminder of just how much we have here.
