  • Repentance - how often that sparks misunderstanding and leaves bitterness in people’s mouths. The knee-jerk reaction to the call to repentance is often denial or annoyance at what is perceived as a direct attack, but what does repentance mean to Christians? Is it a one-time act reserved for unbelievers, or do Christians also undergo daily repentance? According to the Bible, repentance means a change of mind regarding sin. It is the transition from being in friendship with sin in our lives, to recognising that is is the chasm that has separated us from God and that it continues to chip away at the widening gap. In fact, repentance is a gift that directs out hearts to peace and unity with God. Repentance therefore does not serve to rob us or condemn us, but it is the act of changing our minds so that we can be empowered by God to turn around and walk with Him instead of sauntering with the darkness to which we were so precariously unified. Repentance is also not only reserved for the unbeliever, but is a daily act for the Christian. It always serves to draw us nearer unto the Saviour, and therefore it is not something to be avoided, but a wonderful gift to be welcomed.
