  • WHEN TO ROTATE YOUR CHILD'S TOYS / MONTESSORI SHELF + why you SHOULDN'T do scheduled toy rotations! | Montessori at Home
    That's right, I said it - DON'T schedule your toy rotations. Don't aim to do weekly toy rotations. But DO incorporate toy rotations and shelf rotations into your child's playroom? Yes, Montessori shelf rotation (or simply toy rotations, if you're not using Montessori materials) is going to be extremely helpful for our kids. It keeps old toys feeling new and interesting, limits the child's choices, and increases independence. However, in the discussion of how to rotate toys or how to rotate a Montessori shelf, we often glaze over the discussion of schedules. Somehow, there is now an unspoken rule that this must happen on a weekly basis.
    But have we stepped back to ask why? Why should toy rotations be on a weekly basis? Can't there be a different toy rotation schedule? Does there even need to be a Montessori toy rotation schedule?
    My answer is...no. No, you do not need a schedule. That places the decision-making back on the adult.
    We will discuss why that is problematic and what your toy rotation schedule should actually be based on.
    If you're needing tips on a toy rotation system or general guidance on how to do toy rotation and Montessori shelf rotation, let me know in the comments below. I'm happy to answer questions or make additional videos!

      @@MariaandMontessori oh yes this was also one of the things i love because i can get more information in a shorter amount of time and not worry about her waking up hust as im finishing my coffee.

      Aw that's great! I'll try to stick to shorter videos then! I know that's what I prefer now as a mom as well 😅

    This is how Montessori created her environment. She was observing children and recognizing what works for the kids and what does not. Some materials may constantly be used by kids and some may never be touched. As Montessori said, "Follow the child". It is great that you noticed the same with Stella.

    Love the reminder to follow the child! Toy rotations are for them so they should be the ones deciding how long the work on an activity! 🥰

      Yes!!! 🙌 I know it's also one of the harder things to do, especially when time flies by, so I see the appeal of a scheduled rotation. But it's so important to try and listen to what they're trying to tell us 🥰

    Still don't get it 😕 in video 9-10 months activity you shared multiple activities, most of them i already have or diy, BUT my almost 9 months baby play everyday with every single activity from the shelf (all the music toys, egg from TOMY toomies - she loves that one, permanence box - interested only to play with balls, pop-up toy, stacking and different treasures baskets so on) and i don't know what to take out and put others ones.

      Sounds like you have the perfect shelf for her!! I noticed a similar pattern around that age, so I decided to take anything more open ended like musical instruments and balls out of the actual shelf, and place them in the room into their own sections Now they're also in other parts of the house, but I used to have a corner for musical instruments, a corner for blocks, and a corner for balls. Since they are open ended, kids will continue to find new ways to explore them and may never grow tired of them. By keeping them off the shelf, there was more space on the shelf to rotate in close-ended toys. Since those have a final result the child is working to accomplish, eventually they will want to stop working with that material.
      If you still run into that problem, I wouldn't rush to really rotate anything because it seems she is really enjoying on working those skills and you have various skills for her to work with your shelf. If there is something that is a natural progression of a material (object permanence box with a drawer instead of the regular object permanence box), you could try to present it to swap them out if it seems you've had the same shelf for weeks and she could really use a gentle push towards more challenging materials!

    I love the photo cards you’ve made, I really need to make them for Zander! And also the advice you give is so good, rotation should be based on the kids schedule not our idea of the schedule

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  3 года назад

      Yesss!!!!🙌 Absolutely make the cards! They're so good! Def recommend getting just a cheap laminator tho-heard it's more expensive to take it to a store to get done and I've already had to re-run them through the laminator a few times. They get A LOT of love 🤣

    Thisbis i think one of my maim insecurities in carrying out Montessori at home. I can't seem to balance the need for the new activities i know she needs now and removing activities just because there is not enough space and too many toys are available which makes the environment busier.
    I just can't seems to figure out when she is bored with something because she mastered it or it is part of her figuring out what else she can do with it. I know the activities at the moment are the right amount of enticing and at the right difficulty but there things i want to help her with but that would require removing an activity from the shelf and thats the part i cant master. I understand that observation is key to figuring out what needs to be there and what we can do without.
    Hopefully if i follow your advice it will help. I love hearing specific examples like the one you gave because thats how i learn best and can then figure out what i can look out for with Huda i stead of just using the general advice. This is why i watch your videos and other Montessori mums because often i get to understand things well when they give an example with thier own child. Its so helpful to hear your though process.
    Thank you so much. Hahha you are so in tune with whats troubling me or what i need to research each time.

      Aha well for what it's worth, I see what questions there are in the Montessori at Home community between RUclips, Instagram, and TikTok, as well as questions I had, when I try to think of what to post. So you are far from alone in having questions about this!
      At this age too, I think our girls are starting to outgrow the concept of just one shelf, and definitely need more space and probably even more options! I'm thinking of showing what our current setup is around the house in next weeks video, because it has definitely evolved from just the one shelf.
      And I completely understand that feeling of wanting to add something for a skill you see them working on or towards! The best way I've combated that is having a varied shelf of items so each material has a pretty unique purpose, and also using the practical life and sensorial activities we do one on one to supplement that!

      @@MariaandMontessori oh yessss that a brill way to look at the activities indeed i noticed a couple of the activities have a similar function inserting into a small hole and sorting and opening closing containers of such its easy to notice these things when you watch with focus on what it is exactly that they are doing within each activity. I should look into more of the community sites for now its easier to watch videoes or read from some books that i have already read to quickly get to the parts i remember helped previously. Its always good to look in different areas. I need to also take time every now and then to go through the activities all again myself once they are on the shelf and find patterns removing something will be easier that way. I am finding this time so fun to just create and introduce new activities its so tempting to just keep on going but they need time to perfect thier attempts at each activity we introduce so i gotta slow down the main aim is hitting that perfect balance between something interesting and not too easy nor difficult.

    • @MariaandMontessori
      @MariaandMontessori  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely! This age is so fun-i could spend all day making new activities or looking for new materials for her too 😅 You're right, that balance is key but not that easy to find! Sometimes we use two or three materials together, and that adds an extra level of interest and difficulty, while still perfecting the same skills!
