  • In May 2021, the Darkside hacker group executed a devastating cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, one of the largest fuel pipeline operators in the U.S. Stretching over 8,850 miles from Texas to New Jersey, this pipeline system supplies 45% of the East Coast's fuel. The attack led to a massive fuel shortage across several states, including Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Darkside stole 100 gigabytes of sensitive data and demanded a ransom of 75 Bitcoin, approximately $4.4 million, to restore control of the pipeline. This incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime on critical infrastructure.
