Zap was always part of my wounded Gi joes. Masking Tape with red marker as a bandage. My dad bought me Zap at a western Auto here in town. I broke his thumb off the second I took him out of the package and tried to set his bazooka. After that he became a permanent casualty.
I remember having Zap, but I don't remember playing with the figure that much. I believe it's because there was really nothing about him that stood out. The same with Grunt. Snake-Eyes was the first figure my brother and I got. I remember thinking he was apart of Cobra because of the name. Then I picked up issue three of the comic book series and learned he was a G.I. Joe member. As far as the mustache goes, a little paint and a very small brush fixes that. I had a friend who did that. Back then, we didn't think about resell value or collectible status. We were kids, they were toys. We played with them. lol.
Zap will always be special to me as the 1983 thick handle was my very first G.I. Joe. And surprisingly survives intact and complete to this day (I was always careful and gentle with my toys).
"Zap" was the first GI Joe figure I bought. I got him at Service Merchandise on the last day of school in fifth grade (summer 1982). It took me until Christmas day of 82' to complete the entire V1 line of figures and vehicles (and managed to wrangle duplicate VAMPS, RAMS and Snake Eye figures!).
The code name most likely comes from a slang term for using a bazooka to take out a tank. Most likely because the use of the rocket made a quick loud noise.
Another thing to mention is there is versions of Zap with thick thumbs like yours and also thinner thumbs, I guess Hasbro figured they needed to do something about the breakage of thier new figures. I was never a fan of the hands. You had to be extremely careful to get them to hold there weapons.
For some reason I remember Zap from the episode the Funhouse, where they ask him to blow up a door, and his explosives don't blow up the door . . . Not the best thing to remember him for.
I am pretty sure this was my first GI Joe and yep it was fragile. Interestingly thou mine the fingers broke off not the thumbs. So mine was all thumbs. At least until all the rest of him broke.
Great review! I did get a straight arm Zap & Short fuze in 1985 at a Wise Owl arts and crafts store. I was surprised at the time to see such as old figure, but I think they had old stock of toys because I did remember getting a Charon Clash of the Titan's figure in 1984. My mom thought I was a little nuts because I wanted to go to Wise Owl for TOYS! My Zap and Short Fuze figures both broke there thumbs and fingers. The verbal rule among my friends was if they couldn't hold a weapon they couldn't go into battle; informally a 2 strikes your out rule. My friend Chris even went so far as if they still had one good arm but had broken fingers they couldn't fight back with kung-fu- they had not fingers. Thanks again HCC788. Hope to see you at Joecon. I'm writing down questions to ask you.
If Hasbro hadn't been pennypinching with the '82 releases, or had made proper updates to them (I went into some detail on another video of yours), these would still be play-worthy today.
I'm lucky enough to have a very near mint versin of Zap..And yes, he is well taken care of. He even has his V2 bazooka accessory that is unbroken. He wasn't played with at all, probably why he is in such great shape.
Thanks so much for this review! Either Zap, Breaker or Stalker was one of my first GI Joes ( I think it was Breaker). Zap was great, but my Zap broke his thumbs pretty quick. Despite their generic molds, which did bother me a little bit even back then, I still love the first wave of GI Joes. They started years of enjoyment for me that still make me smile. Thanks again for this review.
I think you will find the Marine MK-153 SMAW is the closest real world match to Zap's "bazooka". It was in development in 1981 when the figure was designed.
Always a special one when its a review of an original lineup figure and I appreciate the geometric attention to detail and all the points about the figure you made. This is what its all about. Have fun at Joecon!
This was my first figure. Rock and roll, short fuse, and the MMS with hawk were my next ones. The straight arm made it difficult to hold the bazooka if I remember.
I have the swivel arm version intact with the thin and thick handled versions of his bazooka, that's good enough for me . It's to expensive to track down the straight arm and double handle when I already have a decent version of him.
How likely do you think the 1983 Zap is to break? Debating on buying him, but if he breaks easily I wouldn’t. I like posing my figures a lot, and I don’t want him to break from moving him around a lot.
Yea I remember mine broke as soon as I pulled him off the card .. nice work my friend and congrats on 5000 yet another milestone reached Happy father's day
After Marvel stopped publishing GI Joe the IP went on to other publishers. Devils Due and IDW. These stories were written by Hama as well. One book is a prequel that showcases the original joes telling stores about how Hawk recruited them. It also featured a story about the missing Joe Shooter. Shooter was just an Easter egg in the first issue. Named after one of the staff members at Marvel.
Always seemed obvious to me that the lack of mustache was due to such heavy re use of parts in the initial wave. They did give him an excellent updated head sculpt For the Sonic Fighters version.
Nice review, are you interested in re-reviewing Hawk and his missile system and Steeler and the Mobat? Those reviews are kinda iffy compared to your recent reviews, also you didn't seem to have both versions of the figures yet. Good luck on collecting buddy.
I have a zap but he has a cream colored shirt with green spots. green pants .black boots with gray.black belt.black shoulder harness can you please tell me what yr in was released
I haven't changed the intro. Kevin is sometimes slow to get back with me when I ask him for permission to use his clips. Which is fine! He's a busy man! I understand.
Me voy a duchar, me visto y tiro para el local, preparo la maleta y voy al lío, una vez allí me cambio de ropa y a tatuar, terminaré el trabajo de lineas y relleno pronto y me pondré con los detalles, limpio, foto, vendo y para casa
Hi, HoodedCobraCommander788 ! Great Review! I bought my first Zap figure last year (swivel arm version). I agree that it's better not to put the handle in this figure's hands. I don't want to break my Zap's perfect thumbs, so I just let it rest more on the figure's shoulder. I browsed the 334inchjoe.com link. I didn't see Battle Accessory Packs in the list of topics that was posted. Why do you think that Hasbro made these Battle Accessory Pack weapons in different colors? Why not just keep Cobra Commander's pistol black instead of baby blue or dark blue, or Doc's helmet tan instead of dark green? Was Hasbro just failing at trying to lure kids in to buy differently colored weapons for their Joe and Cobra figures ?
Not really sure about the color change. I believe some other toy lines released accessory packs in the original colors. From a collecting perspective, it is nice to be able to easily tell the original from the re-issue.
nyquist75 I guess he's scared of breaking the back piece, apparently some Zap's have a broken back just because of removing his backpack and unscrewing him could break him more.
Like that mst3k shirt your wearing. What movie are they watching and where did you get that shirt from ?? Great vid as always what did you think about my G.I joe month videos ??
The 90s was such a terrible era for GI*JOE figures. I don't know why the 90s had to have neon all over the place, but it just looks terrible! Glad I had moved on to other things around that time.
Zap was always part of my wounded Gi joes. Masking Tape with red marker as a bandage. My dad bought me Zap at a western Auto here in town. I broke his thumb off the second I took him out of the package and tried to set his bazooka. After that he became a permanent casualty.
Very nice review of G.I. Joe (1983/1983) Zap. This is definitely a must have for all dedicated vintage 1982 - 1994 G.I. Joe action figure collectors.
Zap was my first figure. My mother bought it for me,from a store called Miller Sales.
Zap will always be special to me as the 1983 thick handle was my very first G.I. Joe. And surprisingly survives intact and complete to this day (I was always careful and gentle with my toys).
My first Joe was Braker also my brother had short fuze. Then i hit the jack pot with snake eyes. Istill like all the Joes though. Another great video.
Great Review. Zap v1 was the third action figure I got. He was a Christmas present from my grandma.
The original adventure team set was from 1985 and 1986.
13:38 You missed one -- the 1989 Slaughter's Marauders Mutt also came with that same helmet in black.
The code name most likely comes from a slang term for using a bazooka to take out a tank. Most likely because the use of the rocket made a quick loud noise.
Zap wasn't named after Zapped!, but the re-release of the figure was inspired by the 1990 sequel Zapped Again!
The Sonic Fighters update of Zap was a major update
I didn't know there was someone who dedicated their channel to my favorite characters of all time! New sub here!
Wow zap 82 with thumbs
An acceptable Zap with Mustache can be built using all maurader parts using the trooper head for 35.15
Oh man, that Charles Bronson Zap would have been AWESOME!
I don't remember this fragility in the Brazilian version of Zap. All first wave figures broke their thumbs, but that was all.
I didn't know at first, so-of course-I broke off his thumb
trying to put the bazooka in his hand!
[ And-of course-I had to buy him all over again. ]
Mine lost both its thumbs. We used him as a POW who had been tortured by cobra
i had stalker and fash from the original linup,my main collection didnt start until the second wave
i meant flash
@HCC788 I am glad you used the information I sent you after the Flash video.
SEE YOU AT THE PARTY, RICHTER!
Another thing to mention is there is versions of Zap with thick thumbs like yours and also thinner thumbs, I guess Hasbro figured they needed to do something about the breakage of thier new figures. I was never a fan of the hands. You had to be extremely careful to get them to hold there weapons.
Awesome 👏

You weren't kidding about reviewing him ASAP! Thanks for the shout out.
Thank you!
HoodedCobraCommander788 no problem man
Mlopez 602 thanks super hero Mike.
Thanks for reviewing Zap!!! My Zap came with 2 broken THUMBS
Rare no-thumbs variant!
Do you have that Variant?
Great review! I did get a straight arm Zap & Short fuze in 1985 at a Wise Owl arts and crafts store. I was surprised at the time to see such as old figure, but I think they had old stock of toys because I did remember getting a Charon Clash of the Titan's figure in 1984. I'm writing down questions to ask you.
Cool! See you there!
Great Review! I still have to find a double handled bazooka and a straight left arm!
Me too. I'm convinced it's somewhere in my parents' basement.
It is always a pleasure to have SEO's comment!
If Hasbro hadn't been pennypinching with the '82 releases, or had made proper updates to them (I went into some detail on another video of yours), these would still be play-worthy today.
I think the head sculpt looks more like Billy Bob Thornton
I'm lucky enough to have a very near mint versin of Zap..And yes, he is well taken care of. He even has his V2 bazooka accessory that is unbroken. He wasn't played with at all, probably why he is in such great shape.
Good sir, you completely forgot the Hama run on the comics also established Zap was a qualified (but hesitant) helicopter pilot.
Or did I miss it? (Apologies if so)
Thanks so much for this review! Thank you for watching!
I think you will find the Marine MK-153 SMAW is the closest real world match to Zap's "bazooka". It was in development in 1981 when the figure was designed.
The SMAW and bazooka have a reloadable rocket, while the Gustav has a reloadable recoilless rifle round.
Always a special one when its a review of an original lineup figure and I appreciate the geometric attention to detail and all the points about the figure you made. This is what its all about. Have fun at Joecon!
Thank you!
If I recall, Zap also had some piloting experience, and flew the helicopter the Joes used to escape at the end of the first issue of Marvel Comics.
Yeah, but not much to show there. Just a bit of text in that issue. They didn't even show him at the controls of the chopper.
Zapp Rowsdower!
We had the same problem with mustaches in masters of the universe too the man at arms toy didn’t have one but the cartoon always did
I love that t-shirt! Zap Rosdower from The Final Sacrifice....as you review G.I. Joe trooper ZAP!
Max Brandt is there beer on the sun?
Yo Joe Great Video, Very Informative, Entertaining and Fun, Enjoyed! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
By far your best review. Great insight and comparisons. Love it!! Great work
Thank you!
This was my first figure. Rock and roll, short fuse, and the MMS with hawk were my next ones. The straight arm made it difficult to hold the bazooka if I remember.
I still have zaps on a variety of Joe's. Zap has been in some many outfits threw my life
What I like about the 1982 line is that they have a Korean War look to them. OD with brown boots and then Zap sporting a Bazooka.
I saw that episode of MST3K today! What a coincidence. Enjoy JoeCon!
Great episode!
If I can find some way of working Space Mutiny in an episode I will do it!
I have the swivel arm version intact with the thin and thick handled versions of his bazooka, that's good enough for me . It's to expensive to track down the straight arm and double handle when I already have a decent version of him.
I tend to agree with you. If I wasn't going to review it I would have been satisfied with the 83 version.
One of the "Green Shirts!"
#YoJoe 👊😎
Yo Joe great review
How likely do you think the 1983 Zap is to break? Debating on buying him, but if he breaks easily I wouldn’t. I like posing my figures a lot, and I don’t want him to break from moving him around a lot.
Extremely likely. Extremely fragile. It is one of the few figures I keep in a clamshell and never remove.
Yea I remember mine broke as soon as I pulled him off the card .. nice work my friend and congrats on 5000 yet another milestone reached Happy father's day
Thank you! Happy to have you along.
Me pongo cualquier cosa y me voy al lío, saque en muy poco tiempo el calco exacto simétrico y listo.
Love your shirt!
could you do a top ten comic book video? that would be cool
Congrats on 5k HCC!
Thank you!

Wait a minute.
You're telling me straight arm Zap isn't supposed to be missing his right thumb?
Huh.
Coulda fooled me!
I believe you have the rare no-thumbs variant.
From my experience the no-thumbs variant is the most common!
I keep seeing the scene from Beverly Hills Cop and the explosive ammo. ".....that's how they found Charlie. $20 and a pair of Adidas..."
My first JOE was Rock and Roll
Always seemed obvious to me that the lack of mustache was due to such heavy re use of parts in the initial wave. They did give him an excellent updated head sculpt For the Sonic Fighters version.
Rowsdower was the best Zap!
Zap missing the stash just means he is the man at arms on another earth . Some people just know the stashless ones
I think he would of looked better with a moustache
IIIIIiiii'm just going to call this a second Short-Fuze review....
R u going to be there at the 22
Nice review, are you interested in re-reviewing Hawk and his missile system and Steeler and the Mobat? Those reviews are kinda iffy compared to your recent reviews, also you didn't seem to have both versions of the figures yet. Good luck on collecting buddy.
I am thinking of redoing them. Those videos are really old and I hadn't figured out my style and format yet. I have better equipment now, too.
I have a zap but he has a cream colored shirt with green spots. green pants .black boots with gray.black belt.black shoulder harness can you please tell me what yr in was released
I believe that is Zap v2, which is part of the super Sonic Fighters subline from 1991/1992.
Just noticed Kevin isnt in the intro footage anymore?
I haven't changed the intro. Kevin is sometimes slow to get back with me when I ask him for permission to use his clips. Which is fine! He's a busy man! I understand.
Me voy a duchar, me visto y tiro para el local, preparo la maleta y voy al lío, una vez allí me cambio de ropa y a tatuar, terminaré el trabajo de lineas y relleno pronto y me pondré con los detalles, limpio, foto, vendo y para casa
Is that a Rowsdower mst3k shirt?
It is indeed.
The first series is too plain. I have them all, but they're all just the same by and large. The diversity later on is what makes GI Joe's awesome.
100% agree. For me, I can skip 1982 without any doubt. The 1983 v1.5 figures are definitely better along with the rest of the 1983 line.
@@johnsoehnlen4781 I have no use for the straight armed ones. V1.5 is great because you get the first series with the extra articulation.
Hi, HoodedCobraCommander788 ! Great Review! I bought my first Zap figure last year (swivel arm version). I agree that it's better not to put the handle in this figure's hands. Not really sure about the color change. I believe some other toy lines released accessory packs in the original colors. From a collecting perspective, it is nice to be able to easily tell the original from the re-issue.
why not swap that broken chest piece out ? bet it's pretty easy to find
nyquist75 I guess he's scared of breaking the back piece, apparently some Zap's have a broken back just because of removing his backpack and unscrewing him could break him more.
Zap with moustache looks like Charles Bronson
He looks kind of like the actor John Savage.
Like that mst3k shirt your wearing.
What movie are they watching and where did you get that shirt from ??
Great vid as always what did you think about my G.I joe month videos ??
The episode is Final Sacrifice. I made the shirt myself!
I have to admit I'm behind on watching videos, but I'll catch up!
Have fun at joecon
Thanks! I'm gonna try!
HCC788 Hello, You could get a black Sharpie marker and draw in a mustache , not on the figure-- on you. :)
I'll consider that, since I can't grow a proper mustache.
On the twenty second
Yeah, I should be arriving late on the 22nd. I'm hoping to attend the Finest's bar meetup.
Why do I hate when 3 year Olds cut out the file cards?
I'm sorry. I watched this video too intently and I think it broke Zap's thumbs.
You're the one!!!
I'm not sure "Zap" is the right name for a guy with a bazooka. Do bazookas "zap"?
The 90s was such a terrible era for GI*JOE figures. I don't know why the 90s had to have neon all over the place, but it just looks terrible! Glad I had moved on to other things around that time.
