  • IMPORTANT,
    I really appreciate you tuning in and watching my ad for my Patreon page before the video. I've been holding out on monetizing my videos because I personally don't like watching ads and I know most of you are the same. I don't bring in any money from my videos but I do put in a lot work. That's why I started my Patreon page. No pressure to sign up of course but I want to get the word out. Thanks for understanding! ❤️
    Want to see what goes on behind the scenes in the life of Megs Braap?
    / megsbraap
    I’m going to give you guys some tips to help you become faster in the trails. The first and most important thing I can tell you is to STAND UP. Your body positioning is going to be the key to success and as you get faster and more comfortable on the trails, you’re going to see that you’ll be moving your body a lot on the bike. You need to be able to move around quickly and efficiently and standing up is the best way to do that. It’s important to stand through corners, up and down hills, and through rough terrain. Avoid sitting down in situations that make you uncomfortable. You might feel like you’re slower when you first start trying to stand up all the time but I promise you that if you power through, it will make you a faster and better technical rider in the long run!
    So this brings me to STAND UP CORNERING. So many people slow way down and sit down for corners. This is probably what slows people down the most in the trails. I’m going to show you guys some tricks to help you corner more quickly and safely standing up. The first trick is all to do with your body positioning and where you’re putting your weight. In order to rail a flat, loose corner without washing out or falling into the corner, you’re going to need to get your weight to the opposite side that you’re leaning the bike. So as I turn to the left, my body is slightly out to the right to counter balance the bike as I lean it into the corner.
    The next tip is once again all about body positioning and using your body weight. Many riders are afraid to stand through flat corners or corners with no berm because of a fear of washing out. To help prevent a front wheel washout , you can weight the front tire. In order to do this, I get my upper body forwards over the bars, still keeping my legs central on the bike. You don’t want to bring your knees forwards. This completely unweights the rear end and puts you in a weak, vulnerable body position.
    The next thing I want to talk about is the gear your ride in. Lots of people are in the habit of reving their bikes out, especially people who ride two strokes. I like to go up a gear or two because it’s smoother, more energy saving, and in turn, it’s faster. If you can get comfortable using your clutch a little more and riding in the lower rpms, you’ll be smoother and quicker in the trails in no time. Right now I’m in and out of 3rd and 4th gear for the most part, clutching in the corners when I need to rather than down shifting.
    So we talked about standing up and why it’s important, we talked about ways to help improve your stand up cornering, and we talked about riding a gear higher to smooth things out. Stay tuned for part two for more tips to speed up your trail riding! Thanks for watching!

      Definitely, some years ago me and a friend were telling this to a guy that had just started riding enduros.
      Your body automatically copes with what's happening with the bike you concentrate on picking a line on what's coming up on the going.
      It's like your brain is working independently of your body.
      Great feeling when it's all flowing,
      then you suddenly have an off...The joys of riding enduros.

      Learning to ride faster is bullshit, need to learn how the bike reacts and adapt to it, the speed will eventually come the more you ride

    Really started trail riding about 2 years back and just riding/getting a feel for things has gotten me significantly faster. Really to me seems like getting a 'feel for dirt' and how bikes react under you as well as the 'flickability' of a bike that really doesn't exist as much in my street riding (how I started riding motorcycles). Which yes totally goes to your body positioning tips, as I'm learning how to 'move' on a dirt bike, it's easier to handle and quicker. There are things I can recover from now due to body positioning that would have meant I was going down before.
    I'm a dude but a smaller dude so always appreciate your 'short biker tips', I actually lift my bikes onto the stand by the front wheel due to you. One of these days I'll try your pivot turn, braap on! :)

      He might want to add a flywheel weight. It has about as much flywheel effect as a Zippo lighter.
      Consider suspension work mandatory. '89 was the first year for inverted forks, and there were some major issues with them (aluminum shavings in the fork oil and internal galling) Might want to look for a set of '93-up forks.
      I added an oversised front disc.

    The whole standing-all-the-time thing has eluded me so much. It feels so wrong. Getting on the power, I have to wrench myself forward with strength. On the brakes, I have to heave myself back with strength. In every other turn, I'm taking up so much space on the trail that my helmet is constantly thwapping brush and branches. Using the shifter and rear brake both put me off balance when standing. All that just takes care of itself when sitting. I use a TON less energy, which is important because stamina is my #1 bottleneck. I do stand for bumps though. Anytime things get gnarly I stand or at least heavily weight the pegs, and let the bike deal with its chaos until I'm ready to sit again. At speed on a trail, that does usually mean I'm standing something like 40% of the time; it's just not my default.
    All that said, I really don't do technical type riding. I appreciate and admire those who have absorbed modern trials techniques into their riding style, but I don't run into the log crossings and other one-wheel-approach obstacles that reeaally benefit from the trials-inspired form. I grew up taking flowing trails with whoops and rocks, as well as high-speed dirt fire roads. I was taught to ride sitting in turns and standing for bumps, and that on bikes with ye olde short-travel suspension where sitting on whoops would result in a guaranteed Flying-W situation. So I get the value of standing, just not ALL the time.

    • @dustyrock1
      @dustyrock1 4 года назад +4

      Exactly. Agree with everything you said. Standing for her is much easier cause she is vertically challenged at I think 5"3". As a result her CG is MUCH lower than a tall rider. At 6' when I stand my arms are near vertical and have very little leverage on the bars. Any obstacle hit with the front will send you over the bars unless of course your knees are really bent and sitting back. It's the unseen obstacles that do that. Yes I stand through really rough stuff etc, but do not all the time like some riders.

    • @jesusfreak3587

      you get it bro what im tellin all these folks. her advice is like luke warm bath water! Not really what anyone want or needs! If this practice of standing all the time is a widely used practice in woods racing. Well then....... I feel like i ought to dabble in some woodsies! I'd love to go ripping by dudes struggling to stay up! As i smoke by them in a natural riding/attack position.

      Totally agree with the Not Standing 24/7 crowd. Im MUCH faster sitting, and have kind of adapted a style where i hover my ass over the seat over rough stuff, pushing down on the pegs. That keeps u from getting bucked and still keeps you in position to shift quickly and slide forward on the seat to really slide into/power out of faster corners. I did recently put on Steg Pegz though, that helps save a lot of energy on hill climbs and faster rough terrain where standing is better

    • @GiantMX
      @GiantMX 3 года назад

      you gotta think tho all that standing and sitting is using more energy than just standing MOST of the time. if your going from sitting to standing for bumps on most trails you'll get burnt pretty quick. Thats like doing 2 hours of squats (or however long the ride may be). Learn to use your brakes and shift standing up...simple. if you keep on the balls of your feet and get used to the motion of moving your foot to do a shift or brake, instead of trying to feel it through a thick ass boot, you'll feel much faster and be able to ride for much longer. This was my issue for a long time, but trying to keep up with your fast ass friends in the woods you gotta learn this stuff. Cheers brother and ride safe.

    Great 👍 vid , I always stand up when riding and my mates reckon I’m pretty quick , a few of my friends sit down a lot , one place we ride is light sand and small Mabel type surface one of my mate on his WR450 hates this ride as hie washes out the front end a lot ( due to sitting down in corners and motorcross style in the bends ) I have a question do you support sitting down going up steep snotty hill climbs ? as I see quite a few riders do it to get traction on the rear wheel . I’m also short like you I’m 5/4 .

    • @beauclose2235

      Usually falling in in sand corners happens because of lack of throttle sitting is fine in my opinion as long as the corner is smooth if it's bumpy you want to stand up, if the trail you riding is rough you want to stand up if it's party bumpy you want to stand the whole time because constantly transitioning between sitting and standing takes to much energy

    My Huskys 1st and 2nd gears are like creeper and I'm using 3rd and 4th all the time now and clutch the hell out of tight turns and its alot more manageable, pulls like a tractor and launches like a rocket🤙still working on the standing corners its hard because of years of MX being drilled into my head but its coming together

    Awesome! What gearing do you use? Mine is 14/50 and in the tight stuff I find that I am using the clutch just to keep the rpms up. Lugging is a challenge...

    I prefer standing up as well, however, our singletrack here is so overgrown and bushy that you can't stand up very often for fear of getting destroyed by limbs, twigs, and leaves. Sitting down gets me beneath most of it.

    Question: When I weight the outside peg in a turn for example left corner, weight the right peg standing up, my bike wants to turn right toward the weighted peg and I'm fighting it through the turn. Same with a right corner weight the left peg, bike wants to go left. It seems like a ballet move and I can't seem to find that balance point. I realize it's difficult to teach via text but give it a shot :-) If you are riding straight ahead and weight a peg the bike will turn towards the weighted peg which makes sense.

    What would you suggest on 90 degree corners that start out flat, then you corner into a steep downgrade ?Like 45 degrees.

    Hi Megan .. I watched some of your vids, very informative. I’m a short rider, how tall are you if I may ask ? Just to compare what I’m doing in some handling situations with your performance in these vids.
