Is Levshunov The 2024 NHL Draft's Most Overrated Prospect? - Prospect Talk #53

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- On this episode of The Sick Podcast, Grant McCagg, Shayne Gaumond and Rocco Zappia discuss overrated and underrated prospects in the 2024 NHL draft, the trade between the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Islanders, the Memorial Cup and more!
My wish for the various SICK podcasts is some sort of a timeline where we can easily click on the topics that interest us most.
I'll pass this along and highlight the amount of "likes" it got. That said, hopefully the whole thing interests you 😂
Thanks for watching and the feedback!
I like the show the way it is but sure a portion related to topics suggested by the crowd could be nice ( like eye test sick podcast) ...
Thank you, Hockey Jesus. 😉 @@roccozappia1284
Congrats Rocco... One of your best show
Much appreciated, thanks for tuning in!
If Chicago drafts Demidov that top 6 is gonna be so extremely tiny with Nazar, Moore, Bedard, Demidov, and Reichel for this reason I wouldn't be surprised if they end up drafting Lindstrom 2nd overall.
Too many back issues for such a young kid... as a chiropractor... that scares me away from Lindstrom.
Agreed!
The other day, a Chicago podcast was talking with an expert who actually talked with Lindstrom on the phone. Lindstrom admitted to him that he's still slowly getting back from that injury. Awfully scary for a big guy who throws himself around like Cayden.
I agree, but Bedard is built like a fire hydrant and has the work ethic to get better at D. Nazar actually showed in the few games he played, that he's a willing defender. You're right though, Hawks desperately need a power forward with some skill. Demidov was listed at 5'11"? Who knows. You look at the Lightning, they make it happen with Point and Kucherov on the same line. I'm just wishful thinking.😆
Weird to knock levshunov for the same things parekh does (abandoning his post) or dickinson (questionable decision making). It's why everything after 1 is so up in the air: everyone has flaws that can result in busting out.
I for one think levshunovs extremely high work ethic would lead him to at least he a ristolainen type of pro
Parekh has way more offensive upside. His IQ is gamebreaking. He has defensive lapse mainly because he gets stripped of the puck due to being to lanky . When this kid add up a few pounds of muscle he’s going to be a problem.
Brilliant trade! Love it! We have #2, #18, #34, #50 through the first 2 rounds…coming right back with pick #67 & #72 in the 3rd
I bet its Brandsegg Nygaard
3rd rounders aren’t really relevant.
But FOUR picks in the Top FIFTY !!!
THAT’s where you can realistically have a decent chance at picking impact players
Lol it's almost as if Levshunov was in Blerusian juniors just 2 years ago or something. Of course he's behind the curve
Not if he's 21....ha ha
35:00
Rocco on Kiviharju :
“He couldn’t pin a message to a group chat,
let alone a 200lbs forward to the boards”
I’m dying 😂🤣🤣🤣
Rocco's analysis of the Chi/NYI trade is spot on. Grant's is from left field.
Grant "left field" "no hockey sense" McCagg
I remember seeing buuim for first at the world juniors. It was early in the tournament. He looked like the best player on the states team by far.
Was surprised when I looked at his rankings he was in the 20s. Glad to see he's climbed the ladder
He's a star in the making, IMO
@@roccozappia1284
Agreed !
I have him 4th on my board !
Speaking of my board,
would be curious to know your thoughts on it Rocco
1. Macklin Celebrini
2. Ivan Demidov
3. Zayne Parekh
4. Zeev Buium
5. Cayden Lindstrom
6. BECKETT SENNECKE
7. Berkly Catton
8. LIAM GREENTREE
9. Tij Iginla
10. STIAN SOLBERG
11. Carter Yakemchuk
12. Sam Dickinson
13. Michael Hage
14. HENRY MEWS
15. Teddy Stiga
16. JESSE PULKKINEN
17. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (MBN)
18. Andrew Basha
19. Konsta Helenius
20. Anton Silayev
21. Cole Beaudoin
22. Terik Parascak
23. Cole Hutson
24. Igor Chernyshov
25. YEGOR SURIN
26. Ryder Ritchie
27. Alfons Freij
Notes :
-Connelly & Eiserman on a
“No Draft” list for me
-Levshunov I think is a future
Phillip Broberg type of bust / disappointment
-Silayev & Helenius
are future disappointments for the teams that will be picking them imo.
NOT because they will be bad players,
but because I don’t see them becoming worthy of the high high picks they will be taken at.
In other words, I don’t see them over-achieving vis-a-vis their selection rank,
I actually see them UNDER-achieving their draft selection rank
We have the same Top 5, although in slightly different order. This class is wide open, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. At quick glance I think you have Yakemchuk and Dickinson a bit low, and Mews as your most "too high". I have time for Levshunov and Silayev as prospects, they're both going to play in the league, I just think you're leaving a lot of upside on the board with them in the Top 5. Anywhere outside the Top 5 if you get a sure-thing D with size who will play in the league it's never a "bad" pick. Conservative pick, yes, but bad, no. My thoughts on Eiserman I've been pretty open about, I don't want to sound like I'm always shitting on the kid. He's talented as hell and if he changes his game a bit he could make me look awfully silly for doubting the talent.
"crazy" ivan to the hawks at #2. would be very happy if the hawks are lucky enough to draft 1 or 2 of the following def. between #18 and #50 - emery, badinka, solberg, kleber, freij, and pulkkinen.
I'm not a scout, but I do know that highlights can be used to prove anything.
Its Like the "Jay Walking" segment on the Tonight Show.
How many interviews with people giving the correct answers were not used because they weren't funny?
You might believe that everyone in the country is uninformed if you watch that show.
Same with highlights, you can select highlights that prove whatever you want.
Highlights are much like statistics in that way. They can certainly be used in different ways to try and prove different points. Unfortunately, in a one hour episode we only have so much time to work with, so highlights is what we have to rely on.
That said, if you've seen full games (or other highlights) that might combat the points we made, I'm always up for a healthy debate, provided you took the time to watch the full games like we did.
All that said, your original point is for sure true, but we do try our best to paint as accurate a picture as we can.
Thanks for watching!
Man, that was some nightmarish highlights from Levshunov!
I hope that his good highlights makes up for it.
His skating is super slow.
He's not doing it on purpose but he makes it look like he is over-handling the puck when he loses it like that or when he can't recover an easy puck.
That makes him look clumsy!
Before seeing him play, (going only with his age, size, height and stats), I thought he wouldn't "survive" the top 4, meaning he wouldn't be available for MTL. I was imagining him as a responsible D who could put points on the board.
Now, I am not entirely sure.
Those highlights sort of convinced me that he isn't worthy to be in the top 5 at all, but you are 100% correct that segments can portray only a fraction of one side of the coin sort of speak.
Surely, there's more to his hockey than just that because what I just saw with those highlights makes it hard to believe that kid (Levshunov) is in the top 6 best D's and one of the best of this year's draft and if he is then it makes the whole draft look weak.
The first D to go should be Sam Dickinson. If Montreal would pick him up, I would have no problem with it.
Some Don Cherry stuff lol... Great show as always guys and I would pick Parekh and Buium ahead of Levshunov also... Owen Beck looked good last night against Moose Jaw...
Kurashev had great chemistry with Bedard in the NHL and he was a 4th round pick. Kurashev is a much more talented player than Tanner Howe and the Blackhawks would've been crazy to give up 3 draft picks to draft Kurashev. They aren't drafting Tanner Howe.
Great show guys
Loved the grapes joke lmao
😂 I was pretty pleased with myself there for sure
Only 30% of second rounders plays more than 100 NHL games historically
Is there a chance that maybe someone put a bug in Chicagos ear that Vegas (19th pick), was really interested in a player that Chicago wanted at 20th
Could be that, or playing defense to keep someone from trading up to spot 18 or 19 ahead of them to snipe their pick. Harder for a team behind them to stretch that much further and give up that much more 🤷🏻♂️ we know players fall every year. Smart to start moving up before teams get excited with who is still left on the board
Grant doesn't read the comments but I appreciate his SCTV 3D House of Pancakes mug to camera move lololol
Would be helpful if you put the prospect's name as a lower third during a segment. If Grant/Rocco don't repeat the name... listeners (who are multi-tasking) can get lost with who is being talked about when segments go on for a decent amount of time.
I couldn't agree more with your analysis on Buium and Parekh.
If Davidson doesn't feel intimidated into making either a 2nd pick,... then that is the route you go. I just don't know if he has that gumption as a new GM to not go with the picks everyone is touting as a top defenseman.
This is why I think he could try 31:20 trading down to the 6-9 position if either is willing to not only swap...but give them a 2nd or even a first in 2026.
Great show
They Blackhawks are not trading 3 draft picks for Tanner Howe LOL. Tanner Howe is a 5'10" 3rd - 4th line player in the NHL.
Hey Grant, if you ever see this :
My hairloss was worse than Levshunov at 18 and I was fully bald at 22. It's possible.
I believe he is.
I believe the Hawks are in the most undesirable position at #2 this year.
They are expected to take Demidov or Levshunov.
I am not high on either prospect.
They Hawks should TRADE DOWN and grab a first from 2026
No one is gonna trade an unprotected 1st rounder
2 years in advance
In a draft with a
GENERATIONAL player
like Gavin McKenna lmao
@@moviestoshare813 Unless they don't plan on tanking in two years.🤔
How does Reinbacher fare against the Levshunov standard here?
MUCH better defensively !!!
(Reinbacher)
Props to Grant for spotting & praising Solberg
EARLY ON !!!
But Grant, re-listen to how you described him…
Forget where you ranked him.
Just focus on how you
DESCRIBED him.
Given what you said
(with the kid’s play BACKING your words),
I think your description
deserves an BETTER rank
than Top-20.
To me, what you said & what the kid showed…
It’s Top-10 all day.
He reminds me of a mix between
Miro Heiskanen & Simon Nemec.
PLUS :
I think he’s more physical than
BOTH of them
Still don't get the Chicago angle. There are always teams making picks out of left field and nearing the end of rd 1 the commentary becomes "how are Smith and Jones still available?" Odds are your pick will be there, esp if its some lesser rated prospect no one has scouted heavily.
Probably not a good idea to release this video trashing him before Habs pick, when we NEED a top 4 team before to pick him! 🥴
Being a Blackhawks fan I'm wanting to puke listening to this... this draft pick is going to haunt us for a decade 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Can someone rank, these leagues, WHL, USHL, NCAA DIV I, OHL, QMJHL, and MHL from most competitive- best to least competitive - worst league.
Demidov is not 5,11 is not True he are 6,1
Im thinking Hawks take Demitov. 18 gets them a better defenseman. Would not complain if Hawks went off board at 2 and took Iginla. I think hes a sure thing with no drama. Hate a Levshunov pick. His being right handed is making him desirerable. Last year they tried hard to move from 20 for Moore. They got him anyway.
Until he gets drafted by the Habs, then he'll be great.
Would you guys agree Sam Dickinson is a better D than Levshunov?
Can I answer this after the Memorial Cup? 😂
@@roccozappia1284 fair haha yeah forward core I'm set on my views but these D, so hard to compare
@BaneOfV they're all slightly different from one another. I've had them in just about every possible order at points this year. Going to make for a fun draft day
I certainly hope the Hawks pass on Levshunov. Not because he's possibly twenty, but because the Hawks have enough prospects at D. Anyone who watched that record-breaking turd of a season knows the Hawks need star prospects at forward.
They draft connelly at 18 overall no doubt
Not happening.
Who, the Hawks?
No way Jose, too much baggage.
After recent history, the Hawks are baggage averse.
Habs trade the 5th pick to Black hawks 2nd,along with Barron and Harris
cayden lindstrom most overated prospect for me
Here's hoping he's available at #18.
I’ve said it for a while now
and I’ll die on that hill :
Artyom Levshunov reminds me of
PHILLIP. BROBERG !!!
Big & Can skate like the wind.
But poor hockey IQ.
Great show
Zayne parekh is going top 5 no doubt about it he was unbelievable in first game of the Memorial cup tournament
Shhhhh he's going to Ottawa at 7
Parekh is one of the worst defending junior players I've ever tracked.
I really like your podcast to know how to not think and act. How to throw down players to get higher others. Thanks to show me the way to not act and think. 🙌🏻
Yea why couldn't you just trade 20 for 18 😜
A word of advice, dont try to predict what "Mr Anonymous" has in mind.
His name is Kyle Davidson BTW.
The Hawks had seven picks in the first three rounds, now they have six.
Stay tuned.
Predictions make for entertaining debate and discussion, which is what we hope to provide each week. We will almost certainly be wrong, and that's okay, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what the Hawks have up their sleeve!
Button likes 👍 this Finnish player at #3. Does anyone know 🤔 about his skills set? #3 pick are generally can't miss .
Click bait stuff.
He's really good two way C. Floor is 2C and could become a 1C. Probably a 70-80 pts guy. Reminds me of Hischier a little bit. I'd have him more between 8-10th pick tho.
@xsakic1772 good take
That seems right Grant. Maybe don't interrupt Hockey Jesus so often. That has been happening a bunch lately, yet your disciple doesn't ever return the pleasure. You are the guru, be calm.
😂😂 I am really enjoying the Hockey Jesus thing, makes me laugh every time. Grant is actually a great guy, I wish he'd get a bit more credit. Say what you will about his old school mannerisms, the guy works as hard as anyone in the biz. Wakes up, scouts, goes to bed. Day in, day out. Gotta respect that, I think
@@roccozappia1284 Absolutely Rocco. I 100% agree with you. I love Grant and his hard earned expertise, knowledge and insight. He should be supremely confident of his knowledge and place on the podcast. So why does he feel so insecure that he has to lash out?
@stevequtaq Makes for an entertaining episode. Sometimes we will like to bicker for the sake of it. I'm all for it, we're big boys!
thats cool.
Grant "No hockey sense" McCagg. We all know why he was not a great scout for the Habs and why he do a click bait podcast. Man this guy is so overrated and nonsense guy.
You DO know…
you don’t have to watch the channel, right ???
Keep the hate to yourself,
and go find other channels if you dislike this one
@@moviestoshare813this guy have a platform to put his strange ideas, I have the rights to counter them. Thanks for that suggestion. 👍🏻
Sorry boys, dropping a dislike. As soon as I heard that trash conspiracy theory about Levshunov being 20, I realized this was the wrong source to go to for opinions on prospects.
Yeahhhh…
Because these things NEVER happened, am I right ?
Mikahil Grigorenko…
does that ring a bell ????
Last year, most overrated = Reinbacher
This year, most overrated = Lindstrom
Respecfully disagree.
Last year would be
Nate Danielson imo.
This year 100% Levshunov.
And then : Silayev, Helenius & MBN
27:06 yeah yeah. This is good for Levshunov but not for Michkov and Demidov? Stupid comment. Secondly, Levshunov is not Russian. Know your stuff damn!
Go cry somewhere else
I dont like the Solberg comment because im almost confident he goes 14 to the Sharks. Hes basing "underrated" based on old twitter lists IMO
Don't read comments. 😊
There alot of over rated prospect but than again noone know what that word means.
Can you tell me how a player is overrated before he even play a single NHL game?!? You are not serious. Better say, you are less and less serious. Few days ago, Laine, now this strange stuff. This podcast is maybe the most overrated in all hockey ones.
Your argument is flawed from the start. They're talking about the body of work that the player has shown up to now and how people are missing the weaknesses in his game. If we use your logic then nobody should have Celebrini as a lock for first overall because he has never played an NHL game. They are saying "If he continues to follow this play style his game likely won't translate to the NHL." If you don't like the content don't watch it.
Always gross to shit on kids trying to succeed. Not sorry. Be better.
They talk about prospects.
If they think they should go lower than what they are projected to go…
Of course you have to mention negative points,
of why that is.
L take from you on that one.
If the guy doesn't even know the name of the Hawks GM do I need to hear his opinion the draft?
Grant is that old white uncle on Facebook who stirs up conspiracy theories to get reactions from his younger nieces and nephews. Thumbs down on this episode for me. Just brutal to throw this much shade at an 18 year old. Shameful.
If anything, I’d say Grant is not into conspiracy theories ENOUGH
😂🤷♂️
Grant is amazing.
So are Rocco & Shayne.
They talk about prospects.
If they think they should go lower than what they are projected to go…
Of course you have to mention negative points,

L take from you on that one.
Levshunov sure seems to be .Eiserman was early on . Good show, nice points made .
