  • Hastings is a seaside town and borough located in East Sussex, on the south coast of England. Here are some key facts about Hastings:
It is situated 24 miles (39 km) east of Lewes and 53 miles (85 km) southeast of London.
Hastings is one of the medieval Cinque Ports and has a long maritime history, though its fishing industry has declined in modern times. It still has Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet.
The town is famous for the Battle of Hastings in 1066, which took place 8 miles (13 km) to the northwest at Senlac Hill, though the battle itself did not occur within the town's boundaries. The remains of William the Conqueror's first English castle built after the battle can still be seen in Hastings.
In the 19th century, Hastings became a popular seaside resort after the arrival of the railway. Its beach backs right onto the seafront.
Notable attractions include the East Hill Lift funicular railway, Hastings Country Park, the Old Town with its narrow streets and antique shops, the Shipwreck Museum, and Blue Reef Aquarium.
Hastings had a population of around 92,855 as of 2018 estimates. It is governed as a non-metropolitan district, with a borough council and county council providing local services
