Stefan has done work for future generations ears and fingers that otherwise would've been lost to history. He's a treasure as much as the legendary music he has cataloged.
Son House's voice was incredible and matchless, so much so that none other than Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the the song "Swamp Music" that directly pays tribute to him. "...sing just like old Son House singin' the blues."
absolutely, son house went through real poverty, real racism and backbreaking work and as you say was THE man back in the day. robert johnson idolised and followed around this guy.. he may not be a guitar supremo but for sheer power of voice and spirit - mr house looks down on them all the famous story of muddy waters who when his star was riding high had the (by then) somewhat disheveled, elderly and slightly worse for wear son house in his gathering who at somepoint was being laughed at and made fun of by someone who was wondering why the biggest star in blues at the time was hanging round with this toothless old drunk... which caused muddy to grab and slam this guy up against the wall shouting 'dont you dare laugh at him - he was THE MAN back in the day' that always made me smile
Thanks guys. Another great interview with Mr.Grossman. What a lucky guy ,to have been close to Son House as well as Skip James , Mississippi John Hurt & Gary Davis ! Hey Stefan, if you have any old Nationals knocking about ,feel free to contact me in Bristol ,UK. I will quite happily pay the shipping fee LOL !
Great pleasure to learn more and more about 'my' music ... also interesting how things come together .. I watched a Muddy Waters sort of doc the other day where he was told to (being less of a physical guy off the stage) really getting to some roadies for making fun of Son House walking so fraily . with the words 'never again dare to make fun of this man who in his day was king and the only reason you have a job with me'
Reposted. This is "bonus" footage from Tom Feldmann's forthcoming Guitar of Son House. A double DVD lesson that will be released in late 2012/early 2013.
Nice shirt, too, Stefan. Brownie would be proud of you. You might be interested to know that our Australian winter is even colder and wetter than the Australian summer you were down here for in March and April.
He actually knew how to play harmonica before learning his mad skills on the guitar… when he travelled with Johnny Shines he used to play the harmonica on streets and roads to catch free rides and collect a few dimes
Eddie J. Son House was a honest man, very poor ( he never became a rich man with these records), true singer of the human pain and suffering , he was a saint of the blues music ...
@@michavandam Uncomfortably true that he killed a man, although apparently they let him out of prison early because it was deemed a defensive shooting. He was no saint, as it were, but he really lived the life of which he sang and played.
He's a guitar player/teacher, who's done a number of teaching videos for Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, including a set on Son House: www.guitarvideos.com/artists/tom-feldmann
Stefan is a wonderful, wonderful guy and a wonderful guitarist. Talent and hard work - plus being a great guy = Stefan Grossman.

Check the sound level on your computer output.
Did he misspeak when he said (8:59) that Robert Johnson played the harmonica? It's something I didn't know about.
No its true
He actually knew how to play harmonica before learning his mad skills on the guitar… when he travelled with Johnny Shines he used to play the harmonica on streets and roads to catch free rides and collect a few dimes

- The interviewer is Tom Feldman.
- Here's Stefan Grossman with Son House: ruclips.net/video/To1GXU4Zyek/видео.html
if you havent heard it yet do yourself a favour and go listen to son house's cover of john the revelator and youll understand why he's so lauded
Grossman is sounding like Truman Capote
Jimi Hendrix is the goat of the electric guitar but Sun House and Charlie Pattton are the grand father's of the blues and the guitar period.
Gee, none of my friends have ever discovered anybody!!
Who is the young guy interviewing Stefan?
It's Tom Feldmann
+AikiJoKen Who's Tom Feldman?
He's a guitar player/teacher, who's done a number of teaching videos for Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, including a set on Son House:
www.guitarvideos.com/artists/tom-feldmann
+AikiJoKen Who's Son House?
Google him .
Stefan Grossman is a very bad guitarist. He has no technique and everything he make are stolen from the old bluesmen.
Negative
So? What's your point?
Jealous much?
Let's see your guitar technique
And old bluesmen stole their technique from others
