Decathlon Forclaz Air Short Trek 700 Sleeping Pad Review

    Price : $45
Weight : 13.3 oz with the storage bag
    Materials :
    Thermoplastic polyurethane and polyester
    Measurements :
    Inflated : 47.2” x 20.5” x 2.2”
    Stored : 3.3” x 8.3”
Sizes : One only - no XL versions
    Colors : Gray Only
    R-Value : 1.6
    Chambers : 8
    Review Pros :
    Lightweight
Small sizer pad which is great for summer use
    Compact size
Good thickness - certainly keeps you off of the ground thanks to the chambers
Good quality - I’ve had no issues with leaking air
Excellent valves - two way and anti-return
Easy to inflate and to release air
    Easy to adjust firmness
Comfortable - the chambers are thick enough to keep your body off of the ground. Firmness is adjustable so you can get the right level for you rather easily. Firm or soft while staying off of the ground.
While those are the pros, there is a con to mention and I speak of this in a moment.
    Review Cons :
My biggest issue with the pad are the no slip silicone patches that are on top of this pad; if you are using a sleeping bag then it won’t be an issue and the pad is comfortable but if you are using a blanket or a quilt they may be.
For summer use, I tend to use a quilt or blanket and these pads pull my hair when I am tossing and turning. They will pull at your clothing making tossing and turning more of an experience than it really needs to be.
To me it is a bit weird that the pad has silicon patches on top instead of the bottom; falling off of a pad isn’t a problem with most pads but having a pad slip around is.
You can turn the pad over and that is what I do; but you will have the air valves next to your head; with a pillow I haven’t found this to be an issue and is a more comfortable way to use the pad.
What the company needs to think about here is that this a half mat, a short mat and these are used in warmer conditions and having those anti slip patches aren’t really needed.
Small storage bag - a little larger would make for easier rolling up of the pad and putting the pad in.
Advice : Throw away the storage bag, use it for something else; use a rubber band to keep it compressed when out on a trip. The bag is irritating to use and will require you to roll it tightly so that it fits.
    Slightly loud when moving around
    Summary :
I like half mats, short mats, and I like this pad for the money. The overall quality is very good, it offers good comfort for the money even though it could be better. Again, the silicon patches are a bit weird to me but turning the pad over does make them more useful.
Talking about use, I like half pads in warmer conditions and tend to stop using them once the temp goes below 50f.
This pad is good enough that I am interested in checking out the full size versions; for the money, they may be hard to beat. We will see about that soon enough.
Complaint : This has nothing to do with the pad itself and is more of a mentionable for Decathlon; work on your website and how products are presented when searching. When I went to their site to look at sleeping pads, I typed in Sleeping Pad and it brought up nothing but sleeping bags.
I typed in sleeping mat and it brought up tents.
I type in air mat and it brought up foam pads.
I then typed in air mattress and it finally brought up what i was looking for.

I have the full length version of this. Being 192cm tall I wanted a long pad and also it’s wider than usual pads at a great price. Love the silicone bits that hold on to the floor, I run it upside down so no slip on the tent floor. It works better that way. I run it with a closed cell thin roll up pad with silver lining under it. Good for the UK as not any crazy cold temps. It’s one of the most comfy pads I sleep on and like you say even side sleeping it’s comfy. The bigger full size pad comes with a much better size bag. Decathlon in the UK and across Europe I have found to be good for cycling gear, clothes, gas canisters etc. A friend bought a tent and seems okay but not great. Having said that the 2 person dome tent is great for £45, it does have condensation issues, but it’s well sealed and would be good in stronger winds

Everything I have bought from Decathlon has worked out pretty well. They seem to be consistent at hitting that sweet spot of fairly priced, well designed and most importantly ‘built to last’ gear. I always start their when looking for outdoor gear

I have used it, since two years. And I'm absolutely agreed with Your opinion. It's very good pad, for spring to early autumn. I'm very surprising, that in US, they sell it, with repairing kit. In Poland, well, in times when I buyed it, they don't spoil Us with such luxurys.

Okay so my thermarest sleeping pad broke, during my hike of the GR34 and GR223. So I went to Declanthon to buy that sleeping pad, as a replacement. That one was leaking after just a few days. I went again to the Declanthon pretty good costumor service they gave me a new one. And that one held up just fine. Pretty okay things for the summer for an okay price!

With all the pros and even the cons, I would consider this to be a great choice in buying a sleeping pad. With the low cost, great lift, and light weight you cannot go wrong. All the cons you listed can be easily fixed to remove them all together (the sticky patches on top you can flip the pad over or just put your sleeping back on top, the small bag you can use a rubber band like you said). Really, I would say this is worth getting.

Hi Luke, as always, great review. I been using the very similar full length Forclaz Trek 700 Pad for a couple of years now, mostly on bikepacking and biketouring trips. I can highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a comfortable, lightweight and compact sleeping pad. About the silicone patches - I agree these have somewhat aggressive grip, but it is not the only problem. These patches do come off the pad very easily. A a matter of fact, every couple of nights I find one or two of these patches lying around on the tent flor. My pad lost about half of them already. But this really is my biggest complain about this product.

Thanks for another great review Luke. I'm very supportive of you checking out more Decathlon gear. They've started opening stores where I am in Montreal, and a lot of their gear is pretty unique and makes for a compelling value proposition. But there aren't enough people out there using and reviewing it for me to be confident is buying their stuff necessarily.

Luke, the wife and I use these pads when car camping. we have one each. use the non slip side down and no slippage at all. I'd be tempted to use one in our tent too but haven't tried as yet. I also use our one in my hammock. Very comfy for me but I am skinny and 5'6" tall.

Well, we mostly buy swimming and general sports gear from Decathlon. Everything we got so far has worked out really well. We have one of their stores nearby, so we can take a look at everything. Also, it is designed in such a way that you can not only try on the clothing. But e.g. also their tents are set up at one spot so you can step in, you can lay on their sleeping pads there or you can try out their bicycles, etc. Makes the shopping experience much better IMO. Otherwise, in our experience great quality at a great price - you get a lot for your money.

I have the Forclaz 700 XL and have had no issues with it. Like you, I put the silicone pads face down to keep the pad from slipping around on the tent floor. I also like that the valves have different pull tabs on them, so you can operate them in the dark if necessary. My storage bag is big enough for the pad, even if rolled sloppy. Lucky?

I seen some folks who buy full pads and chop em in half and bond together with a iron. Seems kinda sketchy . Haha. Anything to save a few ounces though! I tried my friends chopped Xlite and was not for me. I found my bag would be a bit more damp just from being on my tent floor because of my regions dewy humid moist conditions. Will gladly stick with a full pad for a few onces more. To each their own.
They are a fun company though. I got the down puffer jacket on sale 2 years ago and it rocks. Also got some toe socks. They are pretty great to for the price. Always nice to see these new budget friendly and quality companies pop up on the scene and give the big boys a run for their money.. They sure are far and few between. So they got my vote! Thanks for the vid Luke. A pleasure as always!

Hey Luke, Thanks for the review, been looking to replace a "The Original" Therm-a-Rest pad that is still in very good shape, no leaks, Ever!. its full length? x 20 inches and has unknown thermal protection. I have gotten cold in 40 degree weather with a 40 degree synthetic bag. That's why I'm Looking. Getting old..er! and Im going to buy a wider, thicker pad with a better thermal protection. Looking Forward to a good nights sleep on the ground. I used a "half" length mat when I was in high school, it seemed okay at the time. It wasn't until I noticed other campers dragging nice big mats out of their tents, I decided to upgrade. lol

I have the long version of this bag, which is ubiquitous in Europe, it's true that the anti-slippery patches would be better under the pad, an issue I solved by flipping it. The valves don't bother me that much because they are next to my head, i.e. under my pillow.

I never tried a short sleeping pad, because my area there're just a few nights warmer than 53°F/12°C ^^ But I updated my equipment this year and I bought nearly everything at Decathlon and I love this stuff. In the first place: it's very affordable, but the quality is also pretty well, and they have a very good range of products. And with the Forclaz Line, they now have a more trekking-oriented, more lightweight line. It costs a little bit more but it's affordable as well, much more than most of the back backing/trekking stuff I know :-)

hi, i have been using it for about a year.
It is especially perfect for use in a hammock, often the mattress goes on one side and the sleeping bag on the other. There with the silicone patches, the mattress will follow the movements of the sleeping bag. We derive a real benefit from it both thermal and comfort in a hammock, I have not yet tried it on the ground.

  • @pedroclaro7822

bought this and paired it with the cheapest hammock they have, itworks wonders in the summer, and since it is only under your upper body it helps getting a flatter lay. I planned on just trying it and returning it, but i kept it for lighter weight trips. the two larger versions are perfect for the bushcraft hammock and tarp, which are of excellent value too - used that for years. I switched to the haven tent but it's really not worth it, if I could i'd go back and get the amok Draumr or a crossHammock.

it's the perfect low cost, decent quality stepping stone to find out what you actually need/ expect from your gear.
After hiking/ camping with the decathlon gear it's easy to upgrade to a more "A-grade" brand without wasting your money, as you

knowing those silicon padges on ridinggear ( horseridingpants), I believe in an instant they are very uncomfortable to lay on. I know riders who got blisters from those on their pants after an hour of riding. Flipped over and have the silicon prefend the mat itself from shifting around in the tent would be a lot better.....overall I like decathlon; I have bought some ridinggear from them. I also bought some practice arrows for recurve bows from decathlon that hold really well and shoot really nice. One is sadly broken now, but that had nothing to do with the quality but everything with a shepherd pup that sank her teeth in it. Their price to quality ratio is excellent in my opinion.

As you probably know Décathlon is a French company.. we have two stores in the town near me... Generally the products have pretty good r&d... and some pretty advanced and nice features on very well priced gear... But there in lies the catch, the quality of the materiels used is not up to the ambitions of the design... most products are cheaply made and I've found don't hold up in the long run.. BUT for the price I'm still tempted by the camping gear which can usually do the job..
As to the website, I'm guessing it was translated from the French, and hence the mix up with terminology. If I go into the French site and type in the same type of product in French I get the correct list of gear... There is a filter on the right-hand column that lets you fine down your choices...

In warmer weather the short length would be ok except the feet would tend to hang.
In the colder weather I want my feet off the ground. The small amount of thermal protection it offers is often enough to make the difference!
Overall it is a nice pad!

all of my worn items are from decathlon because they just deliver, especially considering the price. they have the best value in my experience. of course, it's not the best, but again, for the price, there are a lot of products worse than decathlon.

Sounds like a great pad , for the intended purpose . Also , I have been forced to sleep on a hill a few times . And waking up in the middle of the night , slid down against the tent .. sucks !! Normally your footbox , or feet get wet . This pad , with the wrong side down would stop that , it seems . I have never used a 3/4 pad ! Be safe out there folks .. Gubs

Yap. Decathlon Singapore also has a very badly designed and mot user friendly website mobile/desktop use) when it started. Over the years they did improve on the layout and user experiences.
I uses the long pad and agreed it’s noisy but not a deal breaker. However i do find the long vertical air chamber curve in from the side when laying on it. Horizontal chamber might be better.

I have the longer (185 cm ) older version of this pad, which has no silicone patches. They added those patches as they upgraded the product in 2018 or 2019 if I remeber well.
However it's a great product considering the price. Really comfortable and durable.

The silicone pads would face down so the pad doesn’t slide on the floor.

One thing that I wonder with a lot of your videos where size could be sn issue is your height. In this one and the ones with the One Tigris chairs I think it would be a useful piece of information for making a decision. I'm 6' tall and I don't think this pad would fit well from what I saw.

Wow I see many good words for Decathlon products here, honestly in my youth in Italy Decathlon was well know to be cheap yes but the qualtiy was horrible and durability even worst. Perhaps they improved in the last 20 years or so. Good to know!

"...so if you're someone who wakes very easily, at the slightest sound-"
-then buy some earplugs*, nature is pretty effing noisy, & improve your entire camping experience at once. 😉
Thanks for the warning about the patches, Luke; I have waist-length, fine but profuse, heavily-bleached-for-years hair, so this is _very_ relevant to my interests.
Looks like a beauty, but not for me.
*Unless you're listening for wild animals or _human_ predators, may I suggest Mack's[tm]? Their many varieties are all softer, comfier, + more effective than any other brand I've tried - & being myself a sensitive sleeper in any environment, I've tried a few.

Give me a military rubber lady.yeah it's heavy yet it's tough and full length and the larger outer tubes keep you on the mattress.
