I had one in the 80's (and another in the 90's) I found out too late for the first one that the antenna jack has no protection diode (the whip does). If you want to use a wire antenna put a couple of back to back 1N914 switching diodes inside the antenna's plug or the slightest bit of static electricity will blow the first RF stage (I lost almost all sensitivity on radio no. 1. It was cheaper to buy a new one than let Sony fix it). The synchronous detector is Sony's AM stereo chip. A simple mod can bring out both AM sidebands at once. You just plug it into a stereo amp. This is great for distant AM or SW stations. If a station fades it will fade across the stereo field and you won't lose a word.
renowned for being a nightmare to do any repair work on having said that yours seems good. Best SW radio out there and price hasn't changed much since the 90s
OK, display will be dim because you need dry cell AAs to run it and the memories. The reason they are there is to retain the memories and clock. The light will be dim because the original adaptor used to give out a good 5 volts! Common fault if this radio is deaf will be the Q303 transistor, located right near the antenna input. Hope this helps
