Oginski - Polonaise Farewell to My Homeland (Pożegnanie Ojczyzny)

  • Oginski was a Polish diplomat and politician as well as a composer. And he is well known for this polonaise he wrote in 1794 after his immigration to West Europe. Melody in this polonaise is lyric, romantic and in some places even festive, it’s easy to distinguish where one part is finishing and another one beginning which makes it quite diverse for such a short composition. There are couple of more beautiful pieces Oginski wrote that deserve to be played and heard more often on the internet.

There are two versions of this polonaise and I find this one more complete, however less polonaise-ish. Every time I play it, I feel like I’m swinging on the swing on a cloudy day but a bit of the sun comes up from time to time :-).

For some reason this brings feels to me. I just start imagining that time and feeling of sad nostalgia, perhaps a bit of bitterness and anger about injustice that is happening and a realization that it's just how it is and you have to deal with it.
I'm surprised how much emotions can be translated through a basically sequence of sounds.

No wonder, that's the way it is. The work of the Polish composer "Farewell to the Motherland", when he was forced to leave it during the 2nd World War, on the eve of this event he wrote this work.
