  • I animated one of my favourite throw-away conversations in Deus Ex. I specifically like it because it's better as a statement on mechanical augmentations than the whole of the prequel games.

The rhetoric comment really says a lot, that the NSF really is made of internal personalities that don't always agree on other details.

oh yeah. there's even a conversation later on, I think still on Liberty Island, which further adds to this notion. it's where two NSF dudes are talking about JoJo Fine and how he looks too gay to be part of the NSF cos he has piercings and tattoos. the guy complaining about him being from the deep south, South Carolina or somewhere similar.

@@todsvoid8470 I think that's the most realistic and appreciated part of the NSF. They're all just people/americans from different backgrounds. Sure they don't mesh well, especially because the NSF seems inconsistent on what they want from time to time, but at the end they're all americans who want what is best for their country. The fact such morally opposed groups are happy to put their differences aside for the NSF shows how dire things have become in Deus Ex's time.

One thing the OG Deus Ex did better than any other game in the series is making their NPCs feel like actual people. Little conversations like this one, and the Orange Soda conversation between Anna and Gunther, make the characters feel like more than two-dimensional cutouts for the player to deal with. They feel like they can exist without the player.

I always think about the husband and wife arguing in the Paris Cafe because their son joined MJ12. The mother thinks it's a good way for the son to stay safe while countries around the world are declaring martial law. The father is so ashamed of his son that he gives you the code to a nearby MJ12 security terminal, even though this could mean his son could be killed as a result. Stuff like that feels so believable and these are two very minor NPCs the player might never engage with.
