Man. Holly Collino's case scares the shit out of me.
I had a co-worker who had paranoid schizophrenia and went untreated for months. Our manager wanted to get him help, but he was always just able to not meet the criteria for anything non-voluntary.
One day, I'm coming into work, and I see the police pulling him out in cuffs. Never saw him again, but man. I hope he got help. Before the symptoms really kicked in I liked him a lot. It's scary that mental health problems like that can just wait until you're in your mid-20's to strike. Wherever he is now, I hope he got some help.

as someone with diagnosed schizophrenia, I've researched this a lot for fear of my own shit, but statistically people with schizophrenia are as likely to become violent as those without schizophrenia, people with schizo are as likely to commit homicide if they're under the influence as other people under the influence- so unfortunate how sudden the onset is though

    • @asherscottL
      @asherscottL 2 месяца назад +28

@desiree7429 - I guess a little context, as it sounds like I was scared because of the diagnosis, which isn't fair.
At first, it was just kind of strange. We are unionized where we work, and he would go on about how "if he didn't read the union handbook, he couldn't be union," and we tried to explain that he signed the union contract when he was hired.
His roommate, who also worked with us, mentioned that he started drinking more, and we wondered at first if this was related to the alcohol. He then stopped eating and dropped about 50 lbs.
He became more and more incoherent, and we were becoming worried for his health.
He then started coming in at weird hours (he was first shift, I was second shift). We would see him at 8 pm (his shift ends at 4:30 pm). Sometimes, he would come in without his security badge or in shorts (which aren't safe in our lab). Our manager would escort him out.
For a few months, he seemed okay again. My manager tried to get him some help, but he refused any assistance.
After about four months, he became incoherent again. He seemed convinced the union was going to hurt him and would talk about how they would make him sign. How he needed to protect himself. He would come in at odd hours, and our manager would come in and escort him out. It became legitimately scary to be around him because I think he thought someone was trying to kill him, and I was never sure who. And no amount of sense would get him to understand that the union was just there to protect our worker's rights.
By the time he got taken away in handcuffs (I'm not sure what happened, but it isn't my business and no one got hurt so I assume this was more of a medical removal than a crime) I was really scared that he would do something to "protect himself" from the union or harm one of our union reps.
Holly scares the shit out of me because I've been on the other side of that incoherence, and no matter what I said, I feel like I couldn't reach the person. I don't say this in a "every person with some sort of mental health is broken" sort of way. I just say it in the "she clearly needed help, but no one was able to do anything in time and I've seen that in my life" kind of way.

My ex co-worker took his own life a few years ago after s long battle with schizophrenia. He was nearly done with getting an engineering degree at Uni when his symptoms started. He was always tall and thin but the meds made him gain so much weight. Because the law is very specific. Planning to hurt someone is not even close to the same as planning to kill someone. Also, for it to be 1st degree murder you have to plan to kill a specific person in a specific way and then take definite steps towards doing so. It's not hard to understand. Laws aren't general. They're worded very specifically using language that doesn't leave a lot up to interpretation.

Colino is a classic paranoid schizophrenic. I'm startled that no one intervened, she was never hospitalized, never evaluated. It's rare that schizophrenics become violent, but Colino's illness continued to progress unabated. This also highlights what's wrong with gun culture in this country - someone sold or gave a gun to a clearly deranged woman. Since she never entered the mental health system, there were no records, but still! Wildly irresponsible of someone.

WRONG. That is NOT what dissassociative disorder is. That woman clearly had Delusional misidentification syndromes. Google too hard these days to just simply fact check? All I did was literally google "mental health disorder where you think everyone is stealing your identity" and there it was. Basically, people with that disorder think others are trying to steal their identity or the identity of another person and they feel like people are always out to get them.
Now, let's look up what dissociative identity disorder is. Huh, odd. It says it's when a person has one or more distinct identities. Well, that woman wasn't having that issue. She was accusing of others of stealing her identity, this makes no sense. Oh right, you don't know a damn thing about what you are talking about and are just saying BS, lying, and spreading misinformation. That or you are so lazy, you couldn't be bothered to take a minute of your time to look up real facts. Either way, you are wrong and spreading misinformation. But people with severe mental issues like that are drawn to psychology because they see everyone else as soooo different and want to know why, they can recognize it's them that's different than the norm. Also studying psychology gives them a power boost as they can use it to brag and it gives them a feeling of authority. It’s one of those things where I do kinda get it. It doesn’t feel good, but it’s safer for you and everybody sometimes to just avoid those people. When I went to a big city here I had to avoid someone like that, purely because he was yelling in tongues at cars and turned to approach me as me, my younger brother, and our mom walked past just to try to get to your car. Sometimes it’s just one of those things where you see them once and never again, and especially if you’re with your family, you never know if these people have a weapon on them (especially where I live)

Because it's easier to prove, and less possible to insert doubt into the jury. And before anyone says that she or her family could have gotten her treatment: The prohibitive cost of medical treatment, especially for mental health professionals, in the US will inevitably lead to people not considering this option at all or until it is far too late, instead hoping that the issue will somehow resolve itself without needing to pay thousands of dollars to a therapist. The number of g is not homogene around Earth, the mean (or median?) value of acceleration of gravity (=g) is 9.81m/s^2 if I remember correctly, but I think around places like traps (places of former massive volcanic activity) the g value is higher. This would point to more mass per volume than usual. Hence, my thought, the ground might be harder to penetrate. But I go with the other person who said it's too hot. I'm a mental health care professional ( Psychologist ) and the reason I think there should be a return to asylums and better control over people with diagnosed personality disorders is on this episode. There is a good percentage of sufferers that are not compliant with meds, that cannot care for themselves safely, have a history of erratic behaviour or are in the high risk of a psychotic break - all of whom do not belong mixing with the general population. The cost is too high to society not to keep them housed in a mental health care facility. The problem is ensuring these institutions are more flexible, humane, well run and not the horror show they used to be. So many souls are on the street or in prison because we not longer have facilities that keep them and us safe.

It’s so hard to understand how the brain can check out and watch people try and deal with it .
My mum had a thing called Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Now she was a retired maths teacher and incredibly intelligent and maybe I’m biased but the best mum . She was that teacher where even the bad girls would come knocking at our door asking for help on a Sunday night with their homework because they didn’t understand and they were worried that they wouldn’t complete their homework for the next day at school. She was greatly respected.
Anyway , Charles bonnet basically is a misconnect between your eyes and your brain and you see things that aren’t there . It started off with the green soldiers sitting in the tree across the road to a woman in their shower and the guy in the bedroom who appeared as she took her jumper off . None of them spoke and she would say please tell them to leave so I would go into the bedroom and tell the shower lady’s children to get out of my parents bed .
The horrible thing was she knew they weren’t real and understood the condition but after a while of not knowing to go along with it or be like my dad and quietly say you know they’re not there and mum would nod , it just drove her mad and scared because her logical mind just couldn’t cope .
This is why I always take a step back when a person flips and has a mental episode that comes out of nowhere and they behave erratically. Unfortunately the worst can happen but as I said it can happen to anyone and that cry for help is bad when you can’t help .
Weirdly it was related to an eye condition and she had to have injections in one eye and slowly it went away . Unfortunately years later she had Alzheimer’s and had episodes of unrealistic conversations and then be back in the room and back to reality but she never didn’t know who we were .

36:05 That statement right there: her own brother thought it was enough and he couldn't help her anymore. Yup. Happens all the time. I stopped talking to my best friend of 33 years last year. She is diagnosed with BPD (refuses to take meds and go to therapy, she's been completely untreated) and she's been so paranoid for the last few years that I couldn't take it anymore. She accused me of wanting to ruin her and tell people (don't know who, we don't have friends in common, we live in two different countries) all of her secrets. Why? Because I didn't want to delete YEARS of conversations we had and send her screenshots as proof that I did it. It was the only way she could trust that I wasn't her enemy. After 33 years of not giving her any reason for that. It's exhausting. I can relate to that man.

I feel like people think there is more the family can do when they are worried. We can let authorities know they are worried but it’s hard to prove they seem like a danger to themselves or others and if they do agree and a mental health institute takes them in- they usually only keep them for two days or something.
