Karl hates interviews because they're held on networks that value inhuman traits of glibness and Car-Salesman Charm. Karl is much too genuine to function in an atmosphere of insincerity.
Not only is Karl not thick, he's a far superior actor to that pair. Eamon and Ruth were in 'Annually Retentive' with Rob Brydon, performances that'd be judged sub-par, even in a primary school nativity play.
The fantastic idea behind An idiot abroad, in my opinion is not that its simply about hurting, or exclusively ridiculing Karl. Its the idea of taking a small and content man, insular but a genuinely good person at heart and engaging them in big things. not just pushing someone out of their comfort zone and laughing at their discomfort ( albeit I'd be a liar if I wasn't selfishly amused at all of it) but exposing someone who would have never taken the initiative on their own to do incredible things and experiences....and occasionally asking them to try goat penis and decade old rotten fish. And for what its worth he reminds me more of Bilbo Baggins than Homer Simpson. The man is such a sport time and time again, and while I thank Ricky and Steve for acknowledging the incredible potential for entertainment maybe philosophical areas as well, I wish they would give Karl a well, well deserved moment in the sun
