Today's topic is on the 4 types of Pneumonia that we commonly see in our clinical scenario. Pneumonia is quite a common entity and a very common complication of almost all of the respiratory infections.
By definition , pneumonia is the inflammation of the lung parenchyma and what it really means is that there is inflammation of the alveoli which causes accumulation of fluid into the alveoli thus preventing gas exchange. The person becomes breathless as the breaths are not being utilized by the body
Coming to the types, there are 4 main types of Pneumonia classified according to their causes. So we have :
1) Community acquired pneumonia
2) Hospital acquired pneumonia
3) Aspiration pneumonia
4) Ventilator associated pneumonia
The community acquired pneumonia occurs due the micro organisms present in the environment of locality fo the patient.
Hospital acquired pneumonia occurs due to the hospital environment ,ie. when the patient gets admitted into the hospital and suddenly develops pneumonia as a result of the hospital environment.
Now to differentiate between the 2, the timing of the occurrence of pneumonia is taken into account wherein , pneumonia setti g in within 72 hrs of hospitalization is considered as community acquired pneumonia while the pneumonia that occurs after 72hrs of hospitalization is considered as hospital acquired pneumonia
Aspiration pneumonia occurs as a result of aspiration of gastric content or food particles into the trachea or lungs causing an inflammatory reaction.
Ventilator associated pneumonia occurs due to the patient being put on mechanical ventilator , a device that assist a patient to breath when they fail to do so effectively. Any patient intubated with endotracheal tube or Tracheostomy tube , who develops pneumonia within 48 hrs of intubation is considered as ventilator associated pneumonia
