I’m 12 years old and my whole family is from Barbados and I’m trying to find a good recipe for bakes since I love them and surprise my family!this helped a lot!
Hi Anthony, I am so glad this video was helpful! At 12 years old you are cooking wow! your family must be very proud of you. Thank you so much for giving the bakes a try, let my know how your family enjoyed them.
Anthony, trust you are following the perfect woman I've been making her dishes step by step. I've been dating my Bajan man for over 2 years now here in CT don't have Bajan restaurants so he has not eaten Bajan food in year's but now thanks to Mrs. T we have been rolling out Bahan food. The 🌟
My grandma would make these for me all the time, real Bajan grandma. Thank you for sharing this, she passed before I could have her show me how to make them. I miss my granny so much and this was a great nostalgia moment for me.
Ahhhh! Hope you are enjoying the Island! Bakes are one of Barbados favorites so glad you enjoyed them, now you can easily make them yourself, the recipe does not call for a lot. Before you leave Barbados give the black pudding and souse a try, that's a Saturday dish, you will find most people on the Island selling it on that day. Hope you enjoy your vacation and thanks for watching.
Hello Monisola, I have never had them with coconut or raisins but I am sure that were fantastic, everyone put they own spin on and make them a little different. Those weevils was a real pest, people could not afford to throw away the flour so the weevils had to be sifted. Thank you for watching
There’s an African dish call Fufu, its made with cassava flour, and made the same way you would cook cou cou only without the okras 😊 check out my Nigerian video on how to make cassava fufu, and give it a try. It’s very good you will like it
I love your channel. My husband is from St. Lucy Barbados. I am American. We watch your channel together. Thanks for the Bajan receipes. Can you make fish cakes on your channel?
Hi Shanelle, Thank you so much that is a big complement to me. I try to give everyone an idea of how bajans cooks, their are free to tweak the recipes to they liking. Thanks for watching I hope you subscribe and stay tune for more videos coming.
Your right! My grandmother was such a good cook why change the recipe, every once in a while I do something different but I always go back to the good old time ways.
Have you made light dumplings on your channel as yet ? I love light dumplings with whatever ground provision you may have, and salt fish gravy . Thanks for sharing.
Hi Eria, not yet! I cooked ground provisions before on the show but I don't remember adding dumplings. I love dumplings and may do it sometime in the future. Thanks for the idea.
Morning I've just woke and fancied some scrambled eggs and bakes!!! 😋 will be making some I've no baking powder so will try without🇧🇧👍🏾love your cup is it green my favourite colour😊 A towel under the bowl would stop the movement😊my late mother made them like this yummy😋😋😋
Wonderful! I will be making some bakes this weekend, you put me in the mood lol. I can eat my bakes with or without baking powder but without is my favorite. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed yours.
@@ajwatson9974 Awwww! 86 well he can have them any way he likes God bless him. Bakes or fishcakes don’t last very long in my house so get them while you can lol. Have a good night 😘
Aaawe, they look good; yes they are the old fashion bakes. I was never a fan of bakes or flour period when I was growing up but I love bread and roti skins. I rarely make bakes but if I am making them for someone else and I am going to have one or two I will use the other ingredients that you mentioned. Enjoy your bakes "best teacher in the world" Xoxoxo
@@Tinaraine Lol, I heard you. I wish I had made my fritters with butternut squash; the color would have been so much better, we get the best pumpkins in the islands.
Hi Sheila, its a choice if you like your bakes nice and soft, you'll add baking powder. If you're like me and like you bakes hard you wont add baking powder. I also like my dumplings hard as well lol. I do have other videos up with bakes that have baking powder. Thanks for watching have a great evening.
First time trying your receipe and I honestly have to say it came out better than I expected of myself 😂 My aunt in-law is from Barbados and she always made these when I was younger till now and the only time I get to enjoy these is if she makes them so I'm so glad I came along your receipe as this is truly the authentic way she does it. Only issue is in your video you said 1 teaspoon of nutmeg then corrected yourself and said half a teaspoon but it was already too late as I already added it & last issue is in your video you didn't say how much oil to add so I added enough oil to almost cover the batter mix and for some reason during the cooking process it was puffing up but once I let everything cool down it was perfect 👌 I will attempt to try again but maybe less oil?
Hello, I'm so glad the Bajan Bakes came out great for you. I'm sorry I confuse you with the recipe, sometimes I talk a little to fast and when I look back at the video, I have to do a little correction. I have plenty of Bajan videos so you can watch them at your convivence. Thanks so much for watching.
Hi Lisa, these bakes are made without backing powder, however I have another bakes video up which has baking powder. You can go ahead and check that one out
Thank you for this 🇬🇧🇧🇧 My uncle used to make these herein the UK and yes his were fluffy 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 for life nor money I can't get it du soh 😢 they taste good but are more flat - well cooked but fluffy - slightly doughy in the middle 🤦🏾♀️ I'm making a small batch now 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Good morning Nubian, these bakes does not have baking powder, which will give them that fluffy texture. I made a hard bakes without the baking powder but as I explain on the video you have a choice either way. Thanks for watching
HI Valdene, It's a choice, some people like it without, while others like it with the baking powder, I happen to like it both ways. I will be making more in the future with baking powder.
@@Tinaraine yes you're correct i watch another video the lady made the same thing, and she didn't use any Baking powder either as you said its each one's choice..😊
Hi Ali, no hate taken but those are called bakes, fritters are completely different for instance if you add pumpkin or saltfish there become fritters. Thanks for watching
That's also an option, I like them hard but some people prefer them soft. The idea is for people to see how to put it together and their can tweak it to they liking.
That recipe was the best we really enjoyed them this morning. Thank you for sharing my Aunt used to make this for us. 😊

This is so true, I made lots of bakes for my children when they were young.
Extremely helpful Been to long since I’ve had some good old fashioned bakes 10/10

My mom would sometimes put raisins or coconut in the batter. Was a favorite after school snack. Yes we always sifted our flour for the weevils.
