I remember in 1997 before the last switch from Tory to Labour, you just didn't see police on the streets at all. Within a year of the Labour win, police were on the street again. I remember looking out my window and seeing a police officer walking a beat and being shocked. I hadn't seen police just walking around for over a decade.
Everytime the Tories get in crime goes up. It suits their purposes to drive towards authority, to say crime is bad, vote Tory, we're tough on crime. But crime fell under Labour and went back up under the Tories.
Never listen to what the parties say, they lie. Judge them by their actions.

Bring Community Paediatric’s back in council areas not just in Hospitals. We need more NHS Dentists so children & adults can see a Dentist. & bring a Mental Health service in the community areas. This would take pressures off the Hospitals. Nottingham announced 30 job losses this week in the Mental Health Sector.

Hahahahahahahaha. How do we do that. Only about 40% of the doctors who apply to become paediatricians get into the training because there aren’t enough spaces. About 25% withdraw from the training because they are treated so badly by staff and patients. About 30% cannot find a consultant level job when they finish training. It’s not as simple as just asking got them to pop to your local community centre.

Except he supports a genocide in gazza, he's dropped something like 8 out of 10 of his pledges he made when he ran for labour leader, he's ousted numerous left leaning labour members over totally spurious reasons. He called Jeremy Corbyn his friend during the leadership race and praised him for what he did, then in a later interview said he was never friends with Corbyn. He's changed his mind on many issues and has dragged labour to the right, away from trying to improve life for ordinary working people and his shadow treasury mp, Rachael Reeves, has even recently spoken about lowering taxes for the highest earners. He's not a good person, he's a puppet of Peter mandelson and Rupert Murdoch and doesn't have an ounce of decency or honour.

I worked for the police for a couple of years (as a Paramedic in custody) and my understanding of moving police from street patrol to cars meant that a response was much faster and I do understand that concept, particularly for a widespread town with villages. But it does change the perception since you are not "seeing" police walking round. I believe it was adopted from the U.S as their study showed it worked much more favourably. So I am on the fence with that one, I can see pro's and con's to both.

@@nl59 That's fair enough, especially in higher crime areas.
My point was more focused on rural, mostly law-abiding communities that used to have a local police office. The police officer might have covered several villages but was there to keep the law, mediate grievances, and was just a safe and known figure in the community. We had one until the 2010 Tory cuts. There was a noticeable uptick in petty crime, graffiti, antisocial behaviour in the following years, which only then reduced again because the Tories beat the life out of everyone in this country.

He's a decent guy and quite a good act, but he was given a fairly easy ride here. He wasn't asked much about resourcing - what will all this cost, and who's paying. Nor was he pressed on how he will smash the gangs for the illegal immigrant trade. And legal immigration wasn't touched on at all. I think he is very much better than Sunak, but that's not exactly tough competition. And clearly we have to dump the Tories down a deep hole; but there's a lot more to be done to turn all this into a credible. manifesto.

I am someone who occupies the middle ground of politics, but has tended to vote Conservative in the past. That would probably make me a swing(ish) voter. However, there is no way that I would vote Conservative with the current bunch of shysters occupying the front benches. I would however vote for a Labour Party that had Keir Starmer as leader.
The UK is broken. Whether you blame that on the unions in the 70's, Thatcherism, the GFC of 2007/8, Tory Austerity or Brexit is immaterial. The fact is that the UK is broken. Somebody has to fix it. I've always held a belief that the majority of politicians should probably be excluded from being am MP on the basis that they are doing so to feather their own nest. However, there have been over the years a number of politicians (from all sides) to whom you could never level that accusation.
I believe that Starmer is one of those. Five years as DPP suggests that he wants to make the country a better place (not to mention that he held a high profile 'proper' job before becoming an MP).
I have lived overseas (because of the GFC) for 15 years, but under the new rules have re-registerd as a voter in the UK in my former safe Conservative constituency so that I can vote Labour.
I'm looking forward to retiring back to a UK that has been fixed!
