The only disappointing thing about this awesome scene is that Kenshiro didn't tell the giant badguy "You are already dead" before he exploded. A whole movie about kenshiro, and he doesn't say 'the line' even once?
I recommend watching the first anime, then once you've finished that... Use your own best judgement to decide. It depends on who you most identify with. But personally, I'd read the manga; the last few arcs, which have never been adapted (WHY!!??) are some of the most emotionally moving.
