    This may make me look like an idiot, but I'm on sort of a budget and am only looking to make small food plots not massive ones. Could I get by with just chopping down any vegetation that's where I want to plant my crops, tear up the root systems already there with a gardening rake, and finish it off with a weed killer like Bio-Advanced or Ortho?

      Spray the vegetation first, wait for it to die. Then deal with it. You can burn it if possible to get rid of the veg. If you are making what I call "bait Plots" then you may be able to just sprinkle some small seeds like brassicas on and they will show up after some good rain. Use Glyphosate. You can buy it in small quantities if you go to the Tractor Supply, Rural King, Lowes etc. Having said that, really small plots dont do much for deer and usually get wiped out

      @@ChilcoteForestryServices Appreciate the advice! How much do the small quantities of glyphosate cost?
      I'm aware that the small plots may get wiped out, but I'm just desperate to get more deer to show up at where I'm hunting. I will be using a feeder with corn to supplement the plots though will that alleviate some of the browsing pressure on the plots?

    I just purchased Whitetail Institutes Slay to kill rag weed in my clover plots & hay, wheat, fields ur thoughts on it killing Rag Weed??? Thanx for any help!!!

      I would not worry about ragweed, deer eat it at certain times of the season. Also, Slay cost a lot generics in a 2.5 gal jug are best. Butyrac, clethodim, etc

      @@ChilcoteForestryServices Thank you for Ur reply...I had already bought the Slay & Ur right it is very expensive!I! In the future I will try Ur recommended choices! The broadleaf weeds need to go due to I never sprayed b4 planting fearing the food chain reactions but I now see why there has to be some chemicals at the right times used! I guess U dont have a fear of these chemicals from all Ur knowledge about them? Thanx for any help!!!

    I'm thinking of planting sorghum and switch grass together like you suggested to combine corn with switch. What would be the full directions on how to do that? What chemicals do I use and when do I apply them? After the sorghum and switch grass gets planted and sorghum is tall do I ever mow it over or just leave the sorghum standing until the switch is tall enough to mow?

    • @ChilcoteForestryServices
      @ChilcoteForestryServices  3 года назад +1

      You will use a broadleaf herbicide and a glyphosate product pror to planting. A good burndown with 24d and glyphosate prior to planting should do it. Leave the sorghum sudan it will rot down.

      @@ChilcoteForestryServices the switch growing inside the sorghum will continue to grow without being mowed?

    Stiltgrass in Switchgrass? What do you think?

    • @ChilcoteForestryServices
      @ChilcoteForestryServices  2 года назад +1

      switchgrass will outclass the stiltgrass. Try some pre emergent Plateau herbicide but must be prior to switchgrass starting to grow. Mow high if stilt has seed heads on it

      Deer like it at certain times of the year. If it gets too much you can mow and spray. Perennial plots need maintenance
