thank you so much for posting this! Nancy is the legend, as far as I'm concerned. I have a bunch of her books but I don't see her on PBS anymore so I can't watch her shows.
This is the best Lesson Ever. If the Shoulder isn't hanging right, nothing else will. No more changing the armeye length!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to pattern my best fitted blouse, and use the Pivot and Slide method to change the length of the Shoulder, just a Quarter of an inch!!! LOL Nancy says "a Fourth"!
I've watched only 15 minutes so far but I already know that the is the most complex video about pattern fitting. I love it so so much, it's exactly what I need. Brilliant video, brilliant teacher. Nancy will stay forever in sewers' hearts
Here are two videos she made after this 1984 "Fitting Finesse" video. While the new videos are excellent, this 1984 video should not be forgotten as the information also works well with the new ones and contains different tips and tricks. How I wish I was watching Nancy live. I always watched Nancy and felt I really knew her. She was a wonderful person and taught real lessons to her audiences. I really miss her and can't imagine how her family feels. Rest in peace Nancy.
This is by far the absolute best series on fitting I have seen. I used to eagerly anticipate everyone of Nancy's shows on Saturday morning and watch them live. I greatly mourned her passing. I feel that her creativity lives on in all her programs and books.
I have a few of her books and I use them often but I do so much better with a visual of the procedure...great series. I miss seeing all of her videos because she was a great teacher.
Amazing and easy to follow tutorial. I have watched Nancy's tutorials from time to time and always are so clear and instructive. Reading the comments here I am sadden to find that she passed away. My condolences to her family, she seemed a really nice, knowledgeable and generous person. RIP Nancy you are missed in the Wide World of You Tube by many of us. God bless 🌍🇪🇸
These days patterns have multiple sizes marked on the pattern, there was a time when patterns had only one sizes marked and different sizes were available to choose from. I can’t help but wonder how having multiple sizes on a pattern would alter Nancy’s patterns now?
Oh boy! Nancy, I adore you, and I was fine all through this entire video... Then you did the extensions and the maths and you lost me! I'm thinking if you need to add that much more to a pattern, just go up a size or two!
Thank you very much for sharing this video. I have ordered the 3 in 1 book called Patternfitting, Sewing, and serging with confidence, in a one book package. I think it is older than the one shown here. Does anyone know if the information in the book: Pattern Fitting With Confidence is the same as: Sewing Finesse? Thank you
I am petite 5’4”and tend to wear junior large. I want to reduce the size in women size small. How do I pivot and slide On the pattern to fit the crotch? Help.
Yes, but I need to find more on VHS. I rely on buying them on eBay (which is getting expensive), or people donating or letting me borrow their VHS tapes so I can digitize and upload them here.
@@PfaffPfantom Where are you located, I have LOTS of Videos from her, I would be happy to share if they are uploaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would do it myself but I don't know how to upload videos and do you need permission to do so? I have all of her speed tailoring videos for making jackets
Oh, man. It's so easy and logical compared to the other alternation methods. No cutting a top into X part, pivoting, moving... why do people make things so much more complicated than it needs to be? 🙈
Whether the pattern does not have seam allowances or has a different seam allowance, you always pivot at the stitching line. If you look carefully, that's where she is placing the pin - she is pivoting from where stitching lines meet.
Okay, does the front width chart apply to all commercial patterns? Is it universal from brand to brand? Can I use this method for McCalls or Butterick or any brand of pattern?
It's fairly safe to use them across the "Big 4" - Butterick, McCalls, Vogue and Simplicity. Not sure it applies to Indy patterns like Love Notions, and Itch to Stitch, etc.
@@dancetoday542 the "Big 4" are American or Canadian companies, not exactly sure. I don't think they size differently countries, so you should be able to do exactly as she is advising.
@@tracys.5143 thank you. I was wondering, even though I actually use Love Notions mostly and they have a high bust specified, but the Rhapsody Blouse still came out too big even using the high bust measurement as there is a lot of ease in the pattern. I am trying to lengthen the waist from the top to waist and I have a book I sent off for called The Busy Woman's Fitting Book by Nancy. It doesn't actually tell me in there, only if a fitted waist on a dress. Someone on a group told me to do the alteration using the slide method in the middle of the waist, not at the bottom or top, and also said altering that would lower the hip line. I have been looking at this for a fortnight and still no further forward on how to do it ! I would like to do all-in-one method of lengthening the waist, getting the hip in the right place lengthwise and also grading out to a slightly bigger hip. It is the lengthening that is causing me problems. I have downloaded and cut out small pattern pieces but I am not convinced I have to alter at the waist area and slide up and down and line it up there (at the waist). I really don't know to be honest. Do you have any thoughts please?
Wait a minute? If Nancy is adding 1.5" of ease across the 1/2 Back back, she is adding 3" of ease across the full back. Now I know why I can pinch the back of the Neck almost 2" of excess in Ready Made Clothing. I don't need a Wide Back adjustment. I don't need a Sweat Shirt.
Best video! I miss Nancy, one of the best teachers in the sewing industry. Very knowledgeable and talented thank you❤
3 minutes in & I'm saving this. I watched Nancy when she was on PBS. Truly a treasure.
Nobody else would ever come close and Create a sister station for PBS still shows Sewing with Nancy.
Yes it's simple. That's because only a genius can find simple solutions. I'm so impressed. Thank you so much.
So logical, easy and charmingly demonstrated by our favorite Nancy Z (who so many of us grew up with!).
A wealth of knowledge, explained clearly. So sad for Nancy,s passing.
After death she’s still earning the trust of more people than she’s ever seen.
This is the absolute best video showing this method of fitting. You are so sadly missed Nancy, may you RIP!!❤
Nancy was an excellent teacher. She really explained things well. I'm glad I got to watch her when I did.
I have never seen any other video that made this much sense! I watched Nancy so much when I was younger. She was a treasure!

Start with your shoulders, so very useful! This should be a must see for every new sewer, and those of use who could've used this advice _long_ ago!
Gosh. I learned so much from this. This seems so much easier than the full bust adjustment I’ve been doing.
Nancy, you are a fa1bulous teacher, I've just discovered your videos and am a new sewer. Love your tutorials and also you also look very elegant. ❤
Real gem! My husband has both broad shoulders and wide back and never any pattern ever fits him. This video should be treasured. Thanks for uploading.
