I feel like if we saw more representation of other races as mermaids as children there wouldn’t be a big uproar about Halle berry being Ariel cuz the ocean is literally huge so there can mermaids in diffrent parts of the world like the carribean
Funny that you mention the Caribbean when black people are not native to the Caribbean and we're introduced to the area via slavery. But it's overall just ignorance of history and lack of knowledge of cultures that are not your own. All cultures that had contact w the ocean had tales of what we could interpret as mermaids sirens
Bailey* but yes I agree
i don’t think people cared too much about a black mermaid, they just didn’t see her as ariel since she does look very different from the original little mermaid. but i personally enjoyed her performance. but still, both sides have valid reasonings and concerns, most people liked it anyways.
@@iloveyou-to2sy if you really believe that it wasn't really about her being black then you're delusional or just live under a rock. It was nothing but racism about her playing a made up cartoon.
Theres mermaid stories in other cultures they couldve just dine that instead of appropriating both greek and dutch culture.
Fun fact: I'm from Barranquilla, Colombia, so our half fish half human story is not from the sea, it's from a river and it's called hombre caiman...so it's basically a crocodile with a human head
WOAHHHHHHG that’s so friggin cool thank you for sharing!!! I never even thought of mermaids from different bodies of water like rivers or springs or lakes ! FIERCE
@@dionthetaurus yeah, the story is even crazier because it was just a horny dude wanting to watch girls washing themselves on the river, use a magic potion, the potion goes wrong and that's how we got a half human half reptile being. And I think in Cartagena or Santa Marta they probably have their version of a mermaid (I'm not in a costal city but it's near, Cartagena and Santa Marta are in fact a costal cities from Colombia, the Caribbean). Maybe also San Andres that it's an island and even have pirate legends so, who knows?
That is so cool! is there a certain book that has that folk story in it? My dream is to collect as many Folk stories as possible.
@@PardonMyFrench16 I think that there's a book, but I think it's in Spanish only that's about Colombian myths, but you can search it as Hombre Caimán Barranquilla and maybe try translate it, if anything, maybe someone has it in English
@@chibibeingchibi3197 Ok, thank you so much!! 💙💙
I love that magic is really coming back into the world of aesthetics and looks, this makes my 5-year-old self so happy.
Yes!!! So fun!!
Same here! I used to hide my love of mermaids and fairies out of fear of judgement but seeing it come back in the fashion trends makes me embrace what I denied my younger self
In the African tradition Yemaya is represented as being a mermaid but she's a representation of being the Mother of the sea intbe patheon of the Orisha's. Since I'm a Pisces a have a special affinity to this aesthetic!
Omg thank you for sharing! I love that!!
Yesss! I’m glad you mentioned the mami wata! I’m reading skin of the sea right now to get more inspiration on writing mermaids of different cultures/ethnicites
Being a Pisces I feel like I'm drawn to Yemaya too 😊. It's my mermaid half speaking to me 😊
It would be interesting to see how a style would evolve over the year. Like how would people style mermaidcore in the fall or winter. I think it would open things up even more as people would have to get more experimental with how they portray the aesthetic. I wanna see more cottagecore and piratecore winter...and dark acadamia summers...it would be fun.
Omg that’s a great idea! Switch the aesthetics typical season and flip it
I saw a pinterest comment that suggested a fur, like a selkie, as a way to have a similar aesthetic in winter. Selkiecore! I agree though, I’d love to see more of people adapting these aesthetics to different seasons and weather
The fact that you caught yourself before you said African mermaid and switched to an African country instead😂🙏🏿. I really appreciate that. I agree, it would be fascinating to see mermaid interpretations from around the world instead of the usual European ones. It's something I'd like to see in the Academia aesthetics as well.
Edit:
Its not an style that I would fully commit to but I'd say I'm more of a sirenecore. Also someone said my face had I sirene essence, which I thought was cool. I'm cool with looking like a evil fish lady or all knowing bird lady.
PPS: more fantasy aesthetics please 🙏🏿
Me too! I love it when people distinguish between the different countries in Africa.
Sirencore/mermaidcore suits you SO well you look absolutely gorgeous!!!
Omg thank you!!!
She fits every aesthetics because she's pretty🥰
❤ totally agree. Mermaids should look like based on the water region they are in. 😂 will definitely be adapting this style this summer. I am a mermaid 🧜🏾♀️ but I do like the attitude of the siren.
Oh you always keep me updated on the newest aesthetics! I'm into this! Mermaids are just one of my favorite types of fantasy beings. I can't wait to put outfits together for this! 🐚🌊🧜♀️ I like to call myself a " fresh water mermaid." Because I don't have a sea near me.
Omg yesss I love that! Thank you so much for the sweet comment!
I have always loved merpeople and live by a brackish river that leads into the Chesapeake bay! I think that they're out there still to this day and was so happy to see black Ariel because I think merpeople can be any race or gender(hence calling them merpeople instead of just merpeople)!
Yes!! *scientifically* merpeople would look different in different kinds of water so we gotta have variety!!
There is a Mermaid festival I go to every year in San Marcos, TX. Looking forward to using some of your ideas. Glad I came across page. 💗🧜♀️🌟
Omg I love that! I used to live in ATX!
I‘m definitely more into Siren Core than into Mermaids, basically since I saw the sirens frome the „Pirates of the Carribean“ movie. They’re so beautiful 🤩 And I like the darker, mystic side of it 🧜🏼♀️ ✨
So pretty!
Im loving this new trend as it shares similarities with other "darker" ones such as whimsigoth or fairy grunge. The use of layers and asymmetrical hems but in a pastel palette looks pretty cool. As for the lore, my culture views it kind of the european way. La Sirena/Tlanchana is not a good or bad being, but she does tempt and "doom" those who do not give an offering when traveling by water. In this sense, she is a goddess often seen as dangerous and even maternal.
I love magical aesthetics, but I’m more of a whimsigothic vibe. Does anyone else remember the fake mermaid documentary that Animal Planet put out like 10 years ago?
and honestly when I think of mermaids I think women of color because when you think of mermaids you think of them being somewhere that like a island type vibe and majority of places with that vibe are people of color
EXACTLY!!!
Ooh I've been excited for this one! I totally fell off of RUclips for a bit, but your videos are perfect for positive energy. Time for me to catch up!
Awww thank you!!
Hmm...First off, your skin looks flawless again. Muaw. I also love your intros when you have written them. You're a good writer and it really sets the tone for the video. Third, fantasy is, to me, what fashion should be about. Now the Hmm part...I don't get how mermaidcore is different from other beachy aesthetics. You open with a woman sitting on a rocky shore in a mermaid outfit. Where else could you wear that? To a party? What else can you do in that? Dance? I get that for us bipeds the aesthetic has to accommodate--e.g. long skirts, sandals. Then how is it different from other layered, gauzy beach aesthetics? THUMBS UP for the vid! The aesthetic video'd? Hmm...
Hahaha thanks dad!!
I'm catching up with videos, so I may have missed this if you already did it. But maybe you could discuss knightcore? It's dark and magical, and gives bad ass babe vibes
For siren core, I love the aesthetics and diversity in the series Siren that eline Powell acted in. It’s darker but also has an element of mermaids version of blending in with humans but still being seen as different
i had a dream that ended with me being coast of Filey and a chilly stormy night, with the cliff looming over me and i skedaddled into the lea, for a was a mermaid. I like the idea of mermaid core but I like the darker, colder colours of stormy oceans paired with cream. Also, Filey has really cool rockpools so I think if I was a mermaid i'd just enjoy them.
Ive been so interested in the mermaid aesthetic since I saw the silicone tails on facebook. Ive always been an avid swimmer and ocean/water lover, so to see there is an actual name to what it is im falling for, is CRAZY. ❤
my cancerian ass loves the siren aesthetic, i've always loved anything that had to do with the ocean so this is an automatic hit for me
YESSS I love cancers
@@dionthetaurus STOP! i love taurus, you guys are so comfty (hence why your channel has been a favorite)
@@fairydoll9266 cancers and taureans have one of the strongest bonds in the zodiac! My bf, childhood best friend and my best friend are all cancers 🐂🦀
Ooooh just reminds me of H20! Loved that show as a kid. 🧜♀️
As someone who was interested in this aesthetic for a while before it was mainstream, I found that there was more ethnic diversity in the aesthetic early on, actually quite a lot for what I expect from social media representation of aesthetics. But there was mostly a slim hourglass body type represented, it was much harder to find diversity of size. Now there’s more body types represented but it’s mostly white women and girls. Well that’s been my experience anyway. I’d love to see more cultures and ethnicities represented, it’s such a good aesthetic for sharing different stories and folklore!! It’s always nice to learn more about the world and other people’s perspectives
Also I loved Halle as the little mermaid!!!! I loved the little mermaid growing up because of my red hair and I think she was perfect! She was so expressive and when she was on land she still moved like someone who was used to swimming around in the sea. Her acting and singing was amazing!! It makes me mad that people are so rude about her, especially when they justify it by saying redheads needed to “keep” Ariel for representation. Halle’s Ariel still has red hair!! The old movie still exists! That doesn’t make any sense, like I wish they’d stop making nonsensical excuses and just say they’re so emotionally stunted by racism that they don’t want to identify with black characters and go. Also while there’s recurring issues with how we’re represented, us white redheads are actually over-represented relative to our population (in general and in the disney princess lineup). But as well as red hair becoming more common among black people in places like the US due to interracial relationships, there are multiple other ethnicities where red hair exists naturally, such as in Polynesia and Algeria, that I’ve never seen represented. So Halle’s Ariel is great red hair representation not in spite of her blackness, but specifically because she is black!
I love this analysis video! 💗
in Brazil we have our own indigenous mermaid, she's called Iara, it's a beautiful woman with fishtail that lure men to their deaths
slayyyyy
This channel is SO underrated!!
as a girl from a city that is called after a mermaid, I love this 🐚🥰
"Scientifically" lol
Does anyone know some old mermaid movies, like from the 50‘s and 60‘s ? I’d really like to watch them to get inspiration ✨
I’m more siren-core because one I was already goth so I have more black staples lol but I love the flow of it
I can get behind this 🌊🌺🐚
Love mermaidcore, it's so enchanting. Also side note, the three panels of content at once was hard for me to follow😖
In Chile there's a legend of a kind of mermaid called "Pincoya", she lives in the ocean but has feet, and her dance indicates how the fishing will go... but your video just made me notice that according to the legend the Pincoya is a young, beautiful and BLONDE woman. ???
Honestly, imo these asthetics actually look better on chubby girls. Don't know why exactly (although it's very in line with other aquatic mammals I guess) but I can't stop thinking of the most wonderfully rubenesque mermaid I saw at the Ren Faire. It just looked so much more natual on her and way less awkward and gangly than the skinny girls. 10/10. Chubby girls take this for your own!
I agree! I think chubby is better than thin, but that's just my opinion. I don't mean to sound insensitive to others. 😊
Not really, thin girls look good in everything like magic even in this aesthetic imo too heads down. I can easily see oanh eating it up (she's a yter' check her out) or maybe even jisoo or jennie from bp in case of celebs looking good ❤
@ChroniclesofaZoe speaks a lot on folklore of diffrent mermaids from around the worl. Would highly reccomend if you want to learn abount diffrent cultures interpretations of mermaids ☺
PS love this deep dive (no pun intended), the mermaid and siren core has taken over my brain and gaining more insight and structure around the aesthetic is always helpful with catagorising new fixations in my head🧜♀
there should be a lot more Caribbean and Islander mermaids....
i got infected with this aesthetic a few weeks ago
Could you do a style analysis on e-girls?
Ooooh that’s interesting!
you didn’t say which brand to buy from?
wow you remind me of a younger Juliette Lewis.
Are there only two seasons now?
❤❤❤
