I am learning a language and have been battling against the methods used to teach people! The topic of 'how to learn' became my passion in order to find a way to learn this language. This led me to so many places on the internet. Finally I ended up here with your excellent overview of the book. I love the way you write and explain things. Thank you so much. Definitely subscribing to your channel to see what else I can learn from you.
The amount of efforts you put in this video to make us understood ..is no doubt commendable . Thank u very much.... it is indeed best method to enhance learnings than those traditional method of learning.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been sketching out the books I read for a while to help me remember them. I read make it stick a few months ago and like how you sketched it out. I love it when you are reviewing books, keep it up please! ❤
That’s a tough one as I read a lot of fiction. My favorite fiction would be lessons in chemistry. I would say my favorite nonfiction of the last year would be Jim Kwick Limitless. That is the book that got me started on memory practice. I also really enjoyed Learning to learn by Barbara Oakley, The year of yes by Chandra Rimes, Joyride, about biking from Alaska to Argentina by Kristin Jokinen… and so many more! I look forward to more of your book reviews. Thank you again for all you do I’m not a good sketcher, but I enjoy trying to copy your simple sketches.
Okay...I totally stumbled onto this video from a tangent of videos about language learning. I was watching a video about how to learn languages fast, followed by learning through Essaying by Python Programmer. Then, wanted to look for reviews or clips of the books PP mentioned in his videos and then ended up here. I'm a competitive cornhole player in a massive slump right now. I had no intention of looking for cornhole videos, but this reignited my desire to practice more. Thank you.
What a practical way of teaching any materials that really stick! The three techniques described in this video, indeed, work as long as one remembers them. By the way, I came across that book, but never sat down to read it, so now I see what I've missed. Nevertheless, your visual explanation makes it stick better. What is interesting that I've been using a retrieval method for years without knowing that it is retrieval as I call it active recollection. For example, when I learnt Spanish I tried to recollect vocab some grammar rules as soon as I woke up and whatever surfaced at that moment was solidified in my memory, so I could that knowledge instantly later on. Also, I am into keeping a journal and especially after listening to podcast or watching documentaries or reading aa book I usually put down my reflections. I believe that reading without reflection equals eating without digestion. I don't know your name, but you are a gifted teacher and I am subscribing to your channel to learn more.
I love the concept of sketchnoting. I think your education background makes you a great presenter on this topic. I am going to show my high school Spanish class this video and brainstorm how we want to incorporate these ideas into our class second semester. Gracias.
Good job. I've read this book and I have a memory palace dedicated to the basic principles. I've been looking for a good summary like this that I can recommend to people.
@verbaltovisual Thank you I am studying to be an ESL teacher and these videos are FABULOUS!!! Can you please do a video about how to sketchnote the dreaded English grammar? (The AI is helping me brainstorm ideas on how to gameify grammar lessons but I would love your human perspective, and not just be influenced by a robot lol).
Thanks for the summary. Regarding the model you draw: I would suggest that spacing in time is an example of variation: variation of time (scheduling). So retrieval should be varied in scheduling and in other kinds.
Great channel, thank you! Funny thing about what you've said about having a book with idea backed with scientific findings. I've read a few similar to "Make it stick" books on learning and actually checked many of the stated facts and experiments. It turned out, most of what we know about learning from these books is based on theories and incomplete, primitive or arguable experiments. For example, many recent experiments on spaced learning didn't get any positive result and were almost the same as crammed learning. Nevertheless, books like this give learning a more stable and almost palpable system.
Hum... I didn't find any mistake! 😂 That's funny! Sometimes we are so self-conscious of our mistakes and nobody sees them... I loved the video and your work always inspire me - it is so good to learn through visuals. In fact what we learn really sticks!
The summary you explain in the video is very interesting and educational. I want to know your opinion about the following idea of how to improve learning with the help of Artificial Intelligence. The hypothesis is that learning can be improved by performing an Immediate Test (for example, a multiple response test) and, after obtaining the results of the test, consulting a Conversational Artificial Intelligence on those topics that failed in the Immediate Test. The learning process is similar to scattering seeds on a field. Some seeds will be in the correct position and others will not. The person who is sowing may not notice those seeds that are not well sown (particularly if the field is large). Therefore, performing an immediate test can help quickly identify what is not well planted. Once you have identified the 'unlearned' topics, through a chat bot you will be able to find the section of knowledge that you needed to assimilate. For reference, I live in South America and I am working on a personal project on how to apply Artificial Intelligence in the learning process.
Currently, sketchnoting! Aka visual note-taking, graphic recording, sketching out ideas. Went to school to become a high school math, physics, and English as a foreign language teacher.
Want a physical reminder of these ideas from Make It Stick? You can now pick up this sketched summary as a poster or mug: www.verbaltovisual.store/

Thank you for this wonderful explanation, thank you for your enthusiasm.

Genius idea for a channel
thank you! your sketch makes it easier to understand the concept
It is a nice concise review of the book, "Make it stick". I loved the video.

Thanks for this. I am currently reading it now. Fascinating stuffs
you're greatest teacher ever
Seriously awesome sketch and clearly understood
This is very helpful! Your sketches make the concepts very clear and easy to follow!

I always liked your content, great job!
Great summary, thanks. I am missing the part about putting the information in the brain in the first place, encoding ? And then retrieve it!
Thank you so much! This is awesome explanation!
Likes the charts and pictures. Very nice sketches
very useful summary
Great job. The true is that it's not easy to make it simple
Very good visualize explained

Thank you
Thanks!
omg.. thanks, very helpful :' )
What was the point of the Venn diagram. What was the link?
Go to 1:15. He explains that the center, when Retrieval, Spaced, and Varied are used, productive and efficient learning takes place.
Good vid, my guy
Study is hard work
yes images are better-conjoint retention theory
I am wondering what you teach.
