I love the Derwent Artists for all the same reasons you mentioned here. When I first reviewed the Studio, right back when I first started, I think I gave them an unfair shout because as my reviews went on and I started to learn so much more, I understood the importance of paper for every different brand of pencil I review. A lot of people don’t like the Artists because they are very hard and not highly pigmented, but when you use them on Pastelmat, Lux Archival or UART, it completely transforms the pencils and I would argue that if you are going to use any of the papers I’ve listed, the Artists or Studio are one of the best given how hard their cores are, whereas so many other pencils like Polychromos, Luminance or Lightfast will practically disappear before your eyes when used on the papers above. Excellent video
I agree, I think once you develop your skills, you get to understand so much more about how the different pencils can be used in different circumstances. I don't use the sanded papers personally, but love the pastelmat, and they are awesome on that :) And the colours are just so amazing :)
I'm confused. You wrote above that "A lot of people don't like the the Artists [pencils] because they are very hard and not highly pigmented...". That is a statement that I have been reading applies to the 'Studio' pencils. Did you mean to write 'Studio' pencils and not 'Artist' pencils?
Bonnie, I am delighted to come across this video. When I began with CP ten years ago (coming from doing oil and watercolor portraits) these were the first I used because they were the only ones I had. I love them. They are the best and the colors you featured here are my go to colors when I do portraits of my bi-racial grandchildren. I have purchased many other sets, but you are correct. Even Derwent's LF (with the same color name) are just not quite the same. I thoroughly enjoy watching and hearing you work. I have learned so much from you. Thank you.
Hi Bonny, I have a full set of artists in a gorgeous wooden box that I was gifted about 25 years ago! I might have to have a look and see if these colours are in that set. Would save me buying studios, although I do prefer a hexagonal pencil! Thanks for sharing your tips 😊
Hi Bonny - I only just saw this and wanted to ask about the Venetian Red- it only has a 4 on the blue wool lightfast scale which is 15-50 years light fastness... Are there any other brands that are as hard and work well for that specific colour? All the others mentioned seem to be an 8
I have the set of 42 and those 6 are definitely the ones I use the most. I also like the black for some fine details. It’s just a pity that most of the studio pencils are not lightfast.
The ones I use are all really good lightfastness, to be honest, if you don't frame your work and hang it under museum conditions, none of the pencils, even the most lightfast ones, will last for the amount of years they state.
If you want more lightfast colours like studio, dip into the derwent artists range, they have thicker core but hold a fine point and more lightfast colours to choose from. Most of the range is still not lightfast so openstock is the way to go.
YAY! Great Bonny. Good thing through your previous tutorials, I have all the ones listed here! I love them too! Now I need to get the Derwent Drawing too :)
I am going to buy the full 120 set of artist pencils but for now i have this piecemeal set of vintage studio and artist pencils. They are not the standard paint swish of the current derwent. Some say england, some say great britain and some say rexel cumberland...... But...... None say chocolate, lol. Is the van dyke brown a viable substitute for the chocolate shade?
Hi Bonny! I only have two of these in the Derwent Studios but have all 6 colours in the Derwent Artists! Can I substitute the Derwent Artists for the Derwent Studios? Thank you!
Really informative video, just found your channel. I'm about to start a painting of my rag doll cat in coloured pencil, using similar colours to these so food for thought....! Thanks Bonny and hi from Northants.
Bonny Snowdon Fine Art Ah brilliant! I’m doing mine on light grey paper but not sure if some of the lighter colours will show but I’ll go ahead anyway 😁 I’ll look forward to seeing your video
The colors you mention here are not available separately in the US and 3 of them only are rated 4 for lightfastness. Th others are rated 8. Derwent UK does not ship to the US. Blick only has a few colors. So apart from buying the 120 set, how can I get these 6 colors? Have looked everywhere. Thanks...
@@BonnySnowdonAcademy Yes, it is a shame they are discontinued. I have just bought some new stock whilst I can. Rather disappointed in them. The existing ones I had were a lot older and much better quality. The pencils themselves were in a beautiful matt black with white labelling and the leads, although harder as they should be, released more pigment more easily. The new ones seem to be a completely different pencil. But I will find a use for them.. as you say, maybe for base layers. May I ask which pencils you are using as an alternative now please?
Fantastic video, Bonny! I would like to know what the difference is between the Derwent Studios and Artists pencils and why you choose the Studios over the Artists. Thanks so much!
Silke Kirch FineArt thank you 😊 they gave the same core so are basically the same. The studios are hexagonal and the artists round - so that’s the first difference. The artists are a slightly thicker core and have a few more colours in their set. Apart from that they pigment and core is the same. I like the slightly thinner studio and the hexagonal shape means they don’t roll around so much 😊
Ok. Studio vs. Procolour vs. Artist Which one for finer, teeny-tiny details? Which are the hardest and hold their point the best? Because even polychromos' point breaks!
What is the difference between pastel pencils and coloured pencils ? I am just starting with soft pastel and pastel pencil s . I have painted in oil. Thanks
If you like muted earthy colours, have you considered the Derwent Drawing pencils? They are made for wildlife as all colours are muted earth type. Only drawback is there is only 24 colours.
I used Derwent Studio pencils for years, they served me very well and I learned a lot with them but I certainly wouldn't use them now. Laying down colour is much more difficult than it is with a higher grade pencil such as Polychromos and I wouldn't ever go back to them. I've always found that particular colours always have issues with scratching and pigment grains that make colour laydown inconsistent. Fine for someone learning who doesn't want to spend too much money, but not a pencil I would invest in today as an artist. But if it works for you, certainly keep doing it :) It just doesn't work for me anymore.
They are a pencil that I use in conjunction with my polychromos, luminance, pablos and lightfast - they certainly have their place because of their subtle colours and work beautifully combined with the above brands :) I think pencils are such a personal thing, everyone has their favourite and their own way of drawing - they certainly suit me alongside all the other pencils I have :)
Unfortunately this is an old video and the Studio line has been discontinued. Do wish I had gotten a bunch before that happened. Especially want Copper Beech.
I find I have issues getting the colorpigment on the paper. Really weird, like it has some silly seal on the led. Tried different papers wc and canson mi teintes. Tried different sharpeners, not sure if that is just a fluke but it is annoying as hell. And Im not buying that brand again. I will stick to my polychromo's. I do agree on their selection of browns and landscape colors wich make the set of 72 brilliant for both; but not getting decent lines without skipping ( that does not incluide normal skips you get with toothy paper wich is normal,i just get complete blank spots even with hard pressure and Im not subtle with pencil pressure bc I knew these leds to be hard: but nomatter what I tried, be that paper, different pressures it still was uneven in result so now it sits in my closet being unemployed... what am I doing wrong here?? I can't imagine this poor results of a brand I love for wc and inktense. It hurts becaus they were not cheap. And I absolutely adore the colors. Can someone give me more tips? I have zest it. But there is no point in using zestit if you dont have a decent base layer.
A .Vultink is be inclined to say it’s the paper but the ones you’ve listed should be ok. I wonder if you have a faulty batch - I’ve never had these issues before - I’ve sometimes had a scratchy pencil in all the brands and have sharpened and it’s solved it. I’m so sorry you’ve found this and I don’t blame you for abandoning them if they’re not doing the job.
@@BonnySnowdonAcademy I took the art gears word on the paper caus I had these for a few years and it is so frustrating bc the colors are a dream. So I got the pastelmat of the canson mi teintes. But the scratchy thing is a pain in the ass no offence. I guess at least the poly's now have a decent paper though :P thank god the set of 36 has a fairly good range of basic neutrals. I had the same issue on some of these I just got delivered, I sharpened to a very fine point with a hand crank sharpener and once all the outer layer was sharpened off they are fine, I think its a coating from whats sharpening them in the factory. They even work on copy paper now (used for testing), well as much as to be expected.
I bought these Derwent Studio ad they are harder than hard. Just to get pigment on the paper I have to press so hard that it leaves indentions on the paper. Think I made an expensive mistake. I do, tho, adore Bonny and her work but not these pencils. Live and learn, I guess

hi Bonny, what do you think of derwent artist? are they the same?
They are! The Artists just have a thicker, round barrel and thicker paint on the barrel.
Ok but which paper is better to use the Studio's : Smooth or rudged papers???
There’s no better paper only what works for you. I like pastelmat 🥰
