makes complete sense that it's harder to kill 4 goblins than a minotaur and they are more deadly than a minotaur just because the 4 goblins are standing next to 56 other goblins. AOS horde mechanics make so much sense.
I still don't understand why Matthew's never brought Skragrott. He can control the bad moon, though it uses a CP. Nevertheless, I think it could be a game changer for him.
The main tactical lesson to take from this was the screening of the heroes in the blob of grots. Make sure that you do not leave massive spaces to get a flyer (or teleporter) base into contact with hero bases.
Matt showing off the new haircut! Looking fresh man! As for the batrep, tiny things poke sea monsters with sticks, which is always hilarious & funny to watch :-D
Matt giving Steve the turn in the roll off so it follows the standard you go I go. Don’t think we didn’t notice. Whilst your hair is lovely it’s not totally distracting...😉
I really want to get into Age of Sigmar but, and this is not me looking for a fight, each game I see tends to devolve into a pile up in the middle and its whoever can roll best ends up winning. Can someone explain what I’m missing please? Like in the game above, what are the tactical nuances that Matt and Steve are exploring and choosing between?
It depends on the scenario and armies, in this game the central objective was the most valuable so Steve moved his eels up to wall it off so that Matt couldn't park his blob of grots on it and keep it for the whole game. Had Steve not done that he would have had to focus on the flanking objectives and that would have dramatically reduced his chances of winning. In most cases, it's the movement and positioning that wins the game, although it can devolve into a brawl over the middle sometimes it's actually not that different to 40k, generally speaking, shooting is less effective across the board in AoS despite being able to shoot into combat because fewer armies are skewed towards shooting due to the fantasy archetype vs the sci-fi. One of the things AoS does better than 40k is the variety between armies, in 40k it's all about how well you can shoot and how well you can take and hold objectives which is why depending on the meta some armies just don't hold up. In AoS it's easier to win with an army lower in the meta because theoretically everything can wound anything, it's about how well you can get your hammer units past the opponent's anvil units.
While i'm not a fan of the Deepkin in general. i must admit the Deepkin and the Karadron have to be 2 of the most unique looking armies in all of AOS. Steampunk dwarves in flying boats in the age of swords and sorcery, and a group of elves flying on eels, sharks, and sea turtles...
Question on model counts in AOs. They seem relatively low compared to previous editions. I'm knew to AoS having been an old fantasy player and more recent 40k player but I recall a 2000 point army being much bigger. Even the gobbo hoard army here is relatively small. 9th edition 40k 2000 point hoard armies easily go 100+ minis and my Empire army from 3rd edition had tons of minis. Not complaining or anything just wondering if smaller model count armies are a thing in AoS? I'm really starting to like the built out lore of AoS with Teclis doing High Evles 2.0 and the new vampire minis etc so may dip my toe in an actual army soon.
Gobbo horde is still ~130 models, and that's with investing ~500 points in the trolls. Without the trolls, the gobbos could've swelled to ~180 models or so. But armies that big are unwieldy in a skirmish system opposed to rank and file. Meanwhile, the Deepkin list here is really rather elite, basically all cavalry and monsters. So definitely smaller than the average AoS list. In short, AoS supports a wide range of army model counts, but yes, is in general smaller than old Fantasy. Personally I think that is to its benefit, but to each their own.
@@huwtindall7096 I'm just easing into the game myself, but I think it's also worth noting that there are mechanics in the game that reward going big as well. Some units get a points discount for buying max sized units, upgrades for units are usually unlocked on a model count basis, and some units have various abilities or bonuses that only activate at certain sizes. It does seem to be that they tried to set it up to let you run the kind of army you want in regards to size. Smaller elite armies do seem to be popular, but I think that's just down to preference and the fact they're easier to collect generally.
@@huwtindall7096 Low model count armies can totally work. For instance a full troll army can be around 30 models, beast claw raiders or mega gargant even lower and the latter two are actually quite competitive. But of course there are horde armies as well, you can easily go to 150+ models with death armies

Firstly, the specific question asked in the Commentary is "What happens if two Deepkin armies fight?" As it stands, two deepkin armies are not currently fighting, only one. The second reason is that the Designer Commentary was last updated in December 2018. As it stands, the official ruling for "Who Fights First" on the Warhammer Community site is dated March 2019, with an update to the rules Errata for Deepkin the same time, March of 2019. In that errata the wording was changed on the ruling for the High Tide feature, changing the wording to read "‘In this battle round, units with the Tides of Death battle trait fight at the start of the combat phase." In the "Who Fights First" article, it indicates that if multiple units have this feature, the active player chooses one unit to activate, then the other player does as well, alternating back and forth. Because this Errata and Article are more recent than the Designer Commentary, they are the correct application.

Might as well just roll dice in a shoebox by yourself, there’s no reason to play a game with win conditions if you aren’t going to at least try to pretend you’re trying to win.
why on earth was idoneth giving so many charges t1? Since you aren't even playing real aos you can easily make it so that gloomspite would need like 10 to charge. With eels rather weird getting charged by goblins on foot. Not even squigs who can do long charges but by foot gobbos.
