  • Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with Diane Nelson, Executive Director of Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS). VIPS was originally founded by a group of concerned parents and community volunteers, based on their knowledge that early intervention directly correlates with future academic success in children who are visually impaired. Due to high demand, in 2008 VIPS opened the first preschool for children with blindness/low vision in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and has been rapidly growing since. VIPS empowers families by providing educational excellence to young children with visual impairments in order to build a strong foundation for reaching their highest potential.
Diane Nelson shared her thoughts on the following topics:
    1. Why VIPS was founded, how it grew, and where it is today.
    2. The types of services they provide and why training the parents and teachers is vital for young children with visual impairments.
    3. The wide range of facilities available in their early childhood center-based program.
    4. The importance of advocating for all adaptations needed by children with visual impairments.
