In 1955, I played trumpet in the Culver City High School dance band with Ralph and Robert. It was a joy to see them with their father, at that time the greatest trumpet player in the world. In giving thanks to his neighbors for tolerating him practicing eight hours a day, Rafael Mendez and his two sons gave a benefit concert with the dance band at the high school. It was one of the highlights of my youth.

What a fine example Rafael Mendez was for all musicians, and also as a father to his two sons, who are both world renowned urologists today in Los Angeles. If I ever have anything wrong with my wee-wee, I'll know which trumpet players to go to!

Thanks zooter for the Mendez videos.. I started playing trumpet in '55.. still play some but never got half as good as Rafael..but then there's never been better than him for technique and artistry. Do you know if his boys are still alive?
