      The main part that sells it for me is that the creator (Yumbl), is creating content about concepts, ideas, and usage, that is centred on the idea and concept, rather than a playthrough with some tips and stuff like that hidden within that requires the watching of the whole video. I tend to do grid cities and find that when I have a congested intersection, I do what Yumbl describes only to find that it lets so much traffic through, it just backs up the next intersection down the grid. You can combat this by doing this technique at every intersection all down the collector and sync all the timed traffic lights together. Sometimes I have 6, 7, or 8 intersections all synced together and the lights turn green first for all the cross traffic then for all the through traffic. Works really well most of the time.

    From what I've seen in this game, a single lane can provide huge capacity if the flow is uninterrupted. Multiple lane are only needed to distritube/collect the stream smoothly or -like in your example- as a buffer. A fully used 4lane highway is more likely a sign for a poor layout than for big demand.
    Your video about the SPUI (single node version) made me try 5+3L junctions, the tutorial about timed traffic lights (with the "secret" cycles to clear the junctions) brought it to perfection. Those junctions have by far the best capacity/space I've seen, pure peak performance.

    I was hoping that this would be a more in-depth explanation of the building blocks that go into these fixes. Like:
    A: How do you set up a turning lane? Why would you want turning lanes? When and where do you want turning lanes? When and where do you want a merging lane?
    B: What are lane connectors for? When and where do you want lane connectors? When and where do you NOT want lane connectors?
    C: What kinds of traffic lights are there? What is the difference? Why is the TM:PE auto-setup traffic light the best in most situations?
    D: What do you look out for when adjusting the timings of TM:PE traffic lights? When would you want to increase the times? When have you gone too far increasing the times/ when would you want to decrease the times?
    E: When and where are roundabouts useful? Which TM:PE settings should you use on a typical roundabout? How do you calculate how many lanes to have on the roundabout and how many on the approach?
    This video is more like a "Top 5 solutions for fixing an intersection".

    One trick I like that is similar to your "blowing out the intersection" involves much the same tactics except a 3+2 is used with the dedicated right lanes being able to "go on red". It wouldn't be as useful with that much traffic though. I think I even saw you do it in another video, but not sure it was you. It does involve using lane connector to force left and straight turns into the inboard lane so right turn won't be affected. I will give this version a try next time I am having trouble in a heavier traffic situation! I think its more useful like in your PARCLO video. I think I figured out where I saw it...

  • @DeanShirley818
    @DeanShirley818 Год назад +3

    The biggest mistake I see with the roundabout portion is the roundabout is just too small. Like with lane mathematics and road hierarchy - road size, intersection size, and roundabout size really matters. Making the roundabout physically larger and thus increasing the distance between nodes helps a ton. When nodes are too close together traffic "hesitates" and won't move from one node to the next till it's clear. Once you do that there is no need to go with a 5 lane roundabout and force lanes. Just bump it up in diameter so the nodes are further apart and traffic will naturally flow faster even when there are less lanes.

  • @namenamename390
    @namenamename390 Год назад +1

    Unless the traffic is unusually high in that specific directions, dedicated right turn lanes on intersections might not be necessary. You often see this in real life as well, where the intersection has a dedicated left turn and light phase for left turns only, but the rightmost lane is both for traffic turning right and going straight. Granted, in C:S the difference is not that huge as a 2+3 lane street takes up the same amount of space as a 2+4 lane.

    • @YUMBL
      @YUMBL  Год назад +1

      Absolutely. I just didnt want to cover every iteration of asymmetric roads. 4+2 is the sweet spot imo, but of course an intersection is very flexible.

    • @CJLloyd
      @CJLloyd Год назад +2

      Far from it. In reality, roudabouts are amazing for one reason: safety. They remove a lot of conflicts and slow traffic down. That's intentional and reduces accidents. However, Cities Skylines doesn't care about safety, so the slow down impacts the traffic in game without a worthwhile payoff.

It's certainly possible to have them enter the junction more smoothly than that without having the "enter blocked junction" ticked!

    The roundabout: You don't actually need Traffic Manager. Under junctions in the traffic routes tool under your overlay menu, you can disable the traffic light and then add stop signs, which serve as yield after stopping. You do want to place a highway there if you don't intend on having crossings through the centre, or make your own route for pedestrians so they do not cross the road. For the 4+2 roundabout, would it be more efficient for the traffic taking the 3rd exit, to exit into the 'fast lane' instead of the 'slow lane'? (In the version shown in the vid) the traffic on the opposite side taking their 1st exit is also exiting into the slow lane, and the slow lane is also being occupied by the through traffic from the 'right'. This puts 3 lanes of traffic into the slow lane and only 1 lane into the fast lane. Whereas, if the traffic taking the 3rd exit uses the fast lane instead it's split evenly and I can't see how that would disrupt the flow of traffic through the roundabout. I think you mentioned the problem right at the start. 'intersection at the START of your city'. Real cities don't have starts they have edges best way to build a city in game in my opinion is start with a ring road using a national road and start connecting to it with T junctions in many directions.
    Then as the city grows you can upgrade the road connections

    • @YUMBL

      But the game does have starts and its almost always a single highway connection. I agree that a ring is best, but thats rarely how maps start.

    for the turbo roundabout I personally don't see the need of having a 4 lane into 5 on the roundabout for a 4-way intersection, I always do, x-way intersection, then all roads leading are x-1 and on the roundabout itself is x, so basically, for a 4-way intersection, have 3 lanes coming into the roundabout, 4 in the roundabout, having such big ones seem like unnecessary conflict points, unless you choose to sort the traffic with the traffic signs in TM:PE (i.e. transport truck only road) or to have a road come back around, as the outer lane is best to keep as dedicated right turn for the road it's connected to

    From what I've seen in this game, a single lane can provide huge capacity if the flow is uninterrupted. Multiple lane are only needed to distritube/collect the stream smoothly or (like in your example) as a buffer.
