Did Jesus really exist? | DW Documentary

- Did Jesus, revered by Christians as the Son of God, really exist? Historians and archaeologists search for clues that might lead them to the historical figure of Jesus. Can their efforts solve a conundrum that goes back more than 2,000 years, and fascinates so many to this day?
For more than two billion Christians he is the son of God, sacrificed on the cross. The resurrected Messiah, his birth is held to be so important that it marks the starting point in the Gregorian calendar used in many parts of the world today. He is the cornerstone of Christianity, a figure whose story has evolved in accordance with the creed built by the churches over a period of 2,000 years.
Not until the 18th century and the Enlightenment was the question of an historical Jesus really explored. Beyond the religious discourse, who was Jesus really? A man of flesh and blood? Did the central figure in this religion really exist? Believers answer this question by reading the Gospels, the ancient accounts of the life of Jesus.
But how much historical credibility can be attributed to texts written several decades after Jesus's death? Particularly given that the four official Gospels contradict each other on many points. The researchers question many of the things we think we know about Jesus: Was he really born on December 25th? What was his life like before he began preaching? What is the exact location of his tomb? Today, by examining historical evidence found in Israel, Egypt and Jordan, then harnessing cutting-edge science, can historians finally manage to reveal the mysteries of Jesus's life?

well, great timing, I wonder if you'll post a video on "did Mohammed really exist" before Ramadan is over
They will never do that because of predictable backlash
Christian Prince makes those youtube videos almost daily, sometimes twice a day.
Go see what CP has to say.

Okay but Muhammad actually existed, there are contemporary Credence to it, unlike Jesus a fanfiction
Let's face it. DW is doing this documentary because they know Christians are soo nice and tolerant that their HQ won't be burned down for it
Truth
Germans…last in Europe to be converted to Catholicism, and the first to leave.
I know, right? it is just like... if Christianity was tolerant, the basis of democracy in the west or something
what is the relevance of their hq apropos this documentary ! ? 😕
As a Christian, I'll be the first to admit a lot of us are nuts. But I personally really appreciate this documentary! I embrace scientific and archeological discoveries, even when they go against my previously-held beliefs. There's so much to learn and so much we still don't know. I always try to keep as open a mind as I can.
Picture a small child who is being raised to have a "belief" in Jesus. One day in elementary school, a student mentions Jesus and another responds, "He's not a real person." Their teacher, not preaching, not pushing a point of view, corrects that saying, "Jesus is a historical figure." That child was never taught that and now feels this "belief" has, in some way, been justified. That's a very powerful experience I had many years ago. It's odd then to see so many Christians react to a video posing this question as if it's some kind of attack, and then, suggesting another video to "attack" another religion.
Great comment! Good to see when others are aggressive, excessively apologetic, downright dumb or, at best, humoristic. 😊
Muhamad is a historical character from VI century, his existence is super proven.

By the way, I was baptized and belong a Western country.
If this video was questioning the existence of Muhammad we all know what would be in the News.
We saw it happen to the French media house that made a cartoon.
Why dragging Muhammad (peace be upon him)! He didnt make this video nor any of his followers.
I think one of Christianity's great strengths - at least the CofE in England - is that it is open to criticism, question and, sometimes, ridicule, but answers its critics in a measured and peaceful way, and when necessary turns the other cheek. But lets not forget its often more interested in attacking its own - see the Thirty Years War, English persecution of Catholics in Ireland, discrimination against Catholics in the States and England, the Spanish Inquisition (There's a reason the reformation never took off in Spain), modern Baptists (some still call the Pope the 'antichrist'), St Bartholomew's Day massacre, the siege of Munster, the suppression of the Peasants Revolt in Germany...Shall I go on?
You know Jesus is one of the great prophets of Islam like Muhammed.

"Difficult to contest"?? You didn't actually provide one shred of evidence to back up that claim.
This was what I was thinking! They present multiple theories, then evidence against each one that disprove it. Then tie the whole thing up in a bow in the end with “So it’s all clearly proven then!”
This piece of documentary is very biased. They should have invited Richard Carrier.

@@rdendelacruz4332 Your comment is nonsense lol
It’s sad to see how the facts are not even covered. The New Testament was written in first century A.D. There are some 25,000 early manuscripts in existence, almost 6,000 of which (many being only recognizable fragments) are Greek texts and the others being early translations of the Greek New Testament. But this doesn’t matter. The fact that people gave their life for Jesus, tells us his influence in the people. You guys will never know the spiritual aspect of Christianity or the prophets that said Jesus was going to be born. It doesn’t matter when he was born but I see the message he preached and later on the sacrifice he made for me. I have experienced his love and encourage anyone reading to see the love he has for us. The hope he brought into my life. The advocacy he made with the father. That is all I need. God bless you DW.
rohan, you have the best comment on this video. God bless you, and may we stand firm for Jesus. He is coming back soon!
*WHO REALLY IS JESUS?*
most historians & textual scholars rely largely on ancient written articles, archeological evidence, etc. to substantiate such claim for its truth & veracity
the historiography, historicity and historical reliability for the existence of Jesus of Nazareth and the Christians were dependent largely on these ancient writings as substantial proof for their existence:
• the 3 Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, Luke)
• the Gospel of John
• the Pauline Epistles
• the Acts of the Apostles
and of course, the extra-Biblical non-Christian sources, such as:
• Flavius Josephus' Testimoniun Flavianum or Antiquities of the Jews
• Tacitus' Annals
• Mara bar Sirapion's work on Jesus
• Suetonius' Claudius 25
• the Babylonian Talmud's Sanhedrin 43a
• Tosefta Chullin 2:22-23 (Jacob the Heretic)
• Osroene Abgar & King Tiberius correspondence
• Pliny the Younger
• Thallus quoted by Sextus Julius Africanus' History of the World (Chronography)
• Phlegon of Tralles
• Philo
• Celsus
• Origen Against Celsus (Origen Contra Celsum)
• Eusebius' The Chronicon

• Lucian of Samosata
• Emperor Trajan
• Epictetus' Discourses
• Numenius of Apamea
• Claudius Galenus' de Differentiis Pulsuum
• Tertullian's Against Marcion
• Tertullian's Apologeticus
Today's scholars agree that parts of the New Testament were written in the 1st century CE, but they see other parts like Acts and 2 Peter as written in the 2nd century CE.
. . . We have no manuscripts from the 1st century, only tiny manuscrip fragments from the 2nd century, larger fragments from the 3rd century, and only from the 4th century, we have complete bibles.
@@Achill101 You know here where we all go wrong. In Christianity we are called to live by faith and not by sight. What does that mean? We are called to listen to the message God tells us. The only message that resonates to the whole world is the fact that Jesus died for the sins of the world. In current times there are so many things that go unwritten in history until a later time. Does that mean that it’s not correct or didn’t happen? We can try whatever we want to disprove the bibles credibility and I believe the devil doesn’t that too. It is the doubt he wants to build in people. But all I have to tell you is experience God’s love. Experience who God is and that is through Jesus Christ our saviour.

Jesus wasn’t Caucasian. He was middle eastern.
ok cool
Correct, but he wasn’t Arabic. You are aware that people in the Levant were basically Greek prior to Arab invasions?
Do you think people who live in a place always lived there? Do you think Italians always lived where New York City is?
"Middle Eastern" is not an ethnicity, it's a region. And people can move from one place to another place. Especially over the span of 2000 years, lots of things happened there since and are still happening today. Caucasian people came from the east as Scythians into Europe, they came over the Caucasus, that's why they are called Caucasian still today. Not far away from Assyria where the absolute majority of Israelites were in captivity, the land of the Aesir/Asen.
Why lie, he had blond hair and blue eyes. I have not seen photos of him but there are lots of paintings. I am sure because there are plenty of people from Israel with blonde hair. I think when you said he was from the Middle East, you were just confusing him with Mohammed.

Let's not forget the center theme of Jesus's message of "Love" and Martin Luther's teaching of "salvation through Faith."
Imagine if people just spent their lives trying to be a better person (like Jesus was) instead of this endless he says she says nonsense.
@@BalboaBaggins Nothing points to Jesus trying to "be a better person". Lots of sayings and deeds attributed to him are utterly morally bankrupt and evil. Of course, that's not the image that has been painted over the stories later.
According to whom is that the "center theme" of Jesus' message? What happens to people with no Faith? They don't deserve "salvation"? They will be tortured eternally if they fail to be totally gullible to believe children's fairy tale stories? Can you really call this message of "Love"?
What about all the other "center themes" of Jesus' message according to all the other Christianities that existed? Gospel of Thomas starts: "And he said, 'Whoever discovers the meaning of these sayings won't taste death.'". No crucifixion. No resurrection. If you die without understanding the "truth" in these words _while you are alive_ you won't get any salvation. Meaning "faith" is basically useless. That's according to "Thomas". So which is it?
Let’s not forget that Martin Luther thought himself privy to some higher knowledge and removed books from the Bible. Let’s not forget that the text he canonised had already been redacted and edited by multiple heads of religion before him. Richard Bancroft and the council of Nicaea come to mind. I have a theory about the Wine into Water miracle, I mean not to blaspheme or disrespect anyone's beliefs, it is just an idea and most probably wrong, I usually am... So, here goes... I think that perhaps weddings back then were days, maybe even weeks long affairs. If people had to travel great distances to celebrate wouldn't you stay for a while and spend as much time with friends and family as you could? I know that we Māori can take days and even weeks to grieve for a funeral, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that some cultures do the same with Wedding celebrations. I think the miracle was Yeast and after the water was poured in, then followed grapes and maybe sugars and loads of yeast, two or three days later, in the Middle Eastern heat... voila! Water into Wine! Not as fancy as instant wine but he still would have saved the day and probably saved the families reputation. Anyways, any thoughts? Please don't get all toxic please? I do not mean disrespect, I am an avid brewer and distiller and I know that certain yeasts can work very fast, there is even a 24 hour yeast that will turn water into liquor in 24 hours under ideal conditions. It just occured to me that there may be practical explanations for this wonderful mans journey.
If you read the passage in the New Testament, you'll see that the miracle occurs immediately during the wedding. Jesus instructs to pour water, and shortly after, to take wine from it and give it to the headman.
God became incarnate, was crucified, and resurrected. Prior to that, he performed miracles such as walking on water, resurrecting Lazarus after four days, giving sight to the blind, and curing lepers. Whether one chooses to believe in these miracles is a matter of faith.
Certainly, God could demonstrate undeniable truth to everyone instantly, but that would leave no room for individuals to seek Him out of genuine desire for truth. They would simply be confronted with the glory and strength of God.
God, who created the world from nothing, certainly has the power to transform one substance into another.
There exists a living God who became human without forsaking His divinity for our sake out of love. He paid the penalty for our first ancestor's transgression, which was passed down to us. Being blameless, He took on our sins and died on the cross, only to rise from the dead. Those who believe in Him will also be raised with Him on the last day, often referred to as the wedding of the Lord. In the gospel, it is mentioned that the wedding took place on the THIRD DAY.
2Pet. 3. [8] But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.
ps. Orthodox Christianity celebrates Jesus' Ressurection 5 May in 2024.
One of the most disappointing "miracles". Anything less than erasing all suffering from the beginning of time should not be called a miracle.
It was instantaneous, not 3 days later. It was his first miracle in his human form. Jesus' mother asked him to make the miracle, probably inspired by God. All the wine had ended and she was concerned with what people would think of her friends or relatives(I don't remember). Jesus said his time still didn't arrive, but he probably felt her honest concern with them and made the miracle for her.
There are videos on RUclips that try to find scientific causes for other biblical events such as the plagues in Egypt from the exodus. I don’t think it disproves God just to find possible ways that things can occur naturally as opposed to supernaturally. If God brings a plague upon the earth, He doesn’t wave a wand and make it happen. Maybe He makes things occur in the natural world that bring about the plague. (Such as oxidation in the river to make the waters turn to blood or something along those lines).
Nice theory : ) It reminds me of another theory that's been around a while, re: the Feeding of the Five Thousand (or 2,000 depending on which Gospel you're reading). The miracle was that thousands of people had come to hear Jesus speak, there was no Tim Horton's or Wendy's nearby, so the 12 disciples wanted to send the crowds away. Jesus instead asked the disciples to feed the thousands out of the meagre supply of a few loaves and dried fish. After distribution, when everyone was full, they tidied up the scraps and the baskets came back full! The naturalist explanation: folks had more food on them than they let on, and shared it (so the story becomes about sharing, not as much about supernatural abilities). Likewise with the Wedding at Cana -- once again, thanks for your original theory : ) I think that whether you believe they were supernatural miracles , or if you have a natural explanation, the most fruitful thing is to search for the underlying meaning. What do Jesus' "works" tell us about the Christ, the Kingdom of God, the future of humanity, and our role in loving and restoring one another and all of Creation? Happy Easter!
It doesn’t matter which day or exact date. Since we can’t be sure which day, just pick a day in the year to celebrate this historical event. For the fact that Jesus is born is way too important not to celebrate. Similarly it was understood that He didn’t die on Fri, as some sources said because dying on Fri and resurrecting on Sun is not exactly 3 days. But again don’t be bogged down by the dates, more important is to set a day to celebrate these events so that we remember what Jesus had done on the cross for our sins and resurrected, for then we have salvation and hope.
Very good response, excellent. I have nothing else to add. Well done!
Imagine if people just spent their lives trying to be a better person (like Jesus was) instead of this endless he says she says nonsense.
True the exact date of when Jesus was born doesn’t matter. But when He died does matter very much.
In fact the comprehending of 3 days from the Sabbath (Friday) really matters. It matters because Scripture mentions Christ being killed right before Sabbath (Friday afternoon). And being raised early in the start of a new week (Sunday morning). The 3 days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On the 3rd day is Sunday.
Our discomfort with a lack of three complete 24hr cycles is a reflection on our thinking rather than a miscalculation by the writer. The writer (and thus the Holy Spirit) was not aiming to communicate three 24hr cycles but focused on using day markers.
If the religious scriptures can't even give you a year he was born it makes them seem less reliable and more like fiction.
@@pellestorck3776 you have a point there but not being able to point out the exact date doesn’t mean that the event didn’t happen. Just like in my dad’s case he was born during WW2 and they got the dates slightly off for whatever reason so his dob on birthcert was not the actual date but it didn’t prove that my dad was not born.
Mauro Biglino translated the oldest known texts and what he has revealed will change the world's understanding for the next generation of the time of Jesus.
Seems interesting, but he’s buddy buddy with Graham Hancock who is a known pseudo-historian.
okay - to those who say "he existed" - did he say : " If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." as reported in Luke 14:26?
& when he tells his listeners that "whosoever doth not bear his cross & come after me they cannot be my disciple" … in view of the fact that he hadn’t actually been crucified at that point .. what do you think those present made of such a cryptic command at the time ?
They didn’t, because these texts were written well after his ascent.
They probably transliterated something that was akin to burden or sins into the imagery of the cross since it had become prominent at the time of the writing of these texts
@@epmcgee you’ve almost hit the nail on the head there. They didn’t because the event never occurred as reported. And as you rightly point out - it is simply a later metaphor . What about Luke 14:26? Did Jesus say this or is this another case of the Gospel writers lying for dramatic effect?
Why did you delete the documentary you made about Uyghurs?

Interesting Documentary. Hope to see one done about Moses, the various Buddhas and Mohammed.
The spirit of Christ shapes modern time in all joy and suffering. Our lives are awash with him and his great love. Service was born in him and began with him in it's truest sense.
Coming up episode about hinduism, bhudism , islam? why left 4 regilion or people divide!
Oh no...They have pretty much tainted Hinduism in every possible way.. Something they can do for every religion except you know who...
Two muslim feasts are coming up, end of Ranadhan and feast of sacrifice. Will wait patiently for that documentary. 😊
Islam is just a sect of Judaism, no need to dive in detail.
All religion is myth, described as "the opiate of the masses", for example.
Just because one documentary doesn't discuss them all doesn't change that.
27:29. Please provide the book, chapter and verses in the New Testament where it says that Jesus grew up surrounded by brothers and sisters.
There are mentions in the New Testament about Jesus's brothers and sisters which have been matter of discussion since the contemporary Greek nomenclature included as "brothers" different degrees of relationship, even figurative ones, but, no canonical text describes Jesus's early years in an extended family environment. The only time an event of his childhood is described, there were just him, Joseph and Mary. Luke 2:41-52. Again, didn't the writers listened to the historians?
I think they’re dipping into apocrypha such as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. There are a multitude of apocryphal texts that describe Jesus’s (terrifying) childhood, some of which mention siblings but I can’t recall how
Why don't you interview Benny hinn, creflo dollar , Franklin Graham, Daniel kolenda or Kenneth Copeland or others

Seeing the actual manuscript of Codex Sinaiticus was very interesting.
Jesus has been around over 2000 years and will still be there long after DW ceases to exist.
Jesus is Lord!
Neither confirmed nor denied.
Underwhelming. Where was the references to the Essenes? John the Baptists movement or the Gnostic corpus? The India theory is not a "wild" one, the Silk Road was well traveled in the first century.
The concluding sentence felt rushed and confusing. To the faithful his existence is self evident, and to the historians, it is not or is it? 🤔🤨😶
The dramatic music was tiresome and completely unnecessary.
Exactly - they present multiple theories, then present historical evidence refuting those theories, then say “well it’s pretty much proven then!” What?
@@ChampagneandWaffles Yep, total nonsense of a "documentary". But, it brings in the $$$ to talk about it like this. There's no $$$ in Jesus the myth, lol.

The thorough absence of historical curiosity on the part of a lot of commenters in this section, who only want to ask if the channel is going to make equivalent videos about a particular religion they dislike so satiate their desires for points-scoring, is very telling considering that the video tries to actually support the theories of the existence of Jesus. Of course they didn't even bother watching it before coming in with pitchforks.
These comments are clearly made in order to point out the hypocrisy of DW. They upload this documentary with a provocative title on Eastern which is the most important holiday in the Christian religion. Imagine they would upload a documentary called "Did Muhammad exist?" on a major Mohammedan holiday. This will never happen because among other reasons they fear the backlash.
They are "Christians " after all, don't expect much.....
@@georgesos at least these christians not tryng to kill DW staff or give them death threat like you know.... the one particular group who always scream they are peacefull religion, while give death threat and launch terror
Perhaps you're right that this channel is trying to support the theories of the existence of Jesus, but at the same time they wanted to disqualify the Catholic and Orthodox significant stature and discovery inside Jerusalem. They know very well that Jesus was real, as they had validated on the last part of the documentary. The early Church had already established the important landmarks and traditions in the entirety of Christianity even before in the time of Protestant reformations. They wanted to discredit the Catholic/Orthodox claims like that of Dec 25 wasn't the real birth of Jesus but that of the pagan origin, The Church of the Holy Sepulcher that according to this documentary, not the exact place of Jesus resurrection and pointed out another site which now under archaeological studies "At Least Sponsored by Protestant" as they say. Whats the purpose of finding the exact place of resurrection of Jesus does it gives significant value for anyone? Archaeologists already admits difficulties in establishing evidence to perfectly verify the claims but yet they spend lot of time and effort to take out the customary marker of Christianity lead by Catholic/Orthodoxy. They want to promote Protestantism way if I may say.
And that's the thing!
Let me tell you something i was raised in a house that had no prayers or a Bible in it. I knew there was something more than just this life. I was in search of God i looked to Christianity budism and other places. The search started when i was 18 i found the Way the Truth and the Life in Jesus Christ. Hes really really really REAL. and He loves you!!! I broke every one of the 10 commandments (murder too) it was an accident but a Holy God wouldn't judge it that way. FYI, UsefulCharts made a thorough video on this topic. David almost certainly existed circa 900 BC, albeit he was likely a local warlord (on the scale of the King of Troy or King Herod) as opposed to a major King in the mold of the Russian Czars or the British Empire.@@joexavier4070

11:32. And onwards. *There is not a year zero.* The timeline of historical chronology goes directly from year 1 BC to year 1 AD. If you like, point zero was midnight in between year 1 and year 1, but, please notice, those were the times of Emperor Tiberius in Rome, and there are absolutely no events from that time period dated on year 0 in history books. Neither the Julian or the Gregorian calendar have a year zero. Didn't the writers listened to what the interviewed historians said? Or, are you using astronomical, ISO, Hinduist or Buddhist calendars to debate a Christian chronology?

At 50:09 they say: "Today, historians are almost unanimous on the subject. The existence of a historical Jesus can be in no doubt. His crucifixion is all too plausible. And there is no text questioning the existence of Jesus. For such a revolutionary figure, if the slightest doubt could have been planted, it would have been. Many things in the Bible seems fictitious and impractical, yet we believe it as the "Words Of God".😊
Well, there is a reason why those irrational things are called ,,miracles".
Even Bible describe people's shock and lack of faith to some miracles ( one of examples can be when even one of Jesus's apostles, Saint Thomas, didn't believe in his resurrection until he touched his wounds)
Many things in the Bible are also archeologically proven and is arguably one of the greatest historical accounts in history.

Very few historians disagree that Jesus didn't exist...he existed, the biggest question is whether his miracles were real.
