There's no such thing as too late. I thought that too, but after dabbling in electronic music production as a teen, I'm now back in it going on 30 y/o soon. I had "given up" on it cause I wasn't super young anymore, but having spent a lot of free time experimenting and studying, I have made *insane* progress from where I was. If you like doing it, do it. Don't let your age stop you.

I learnt from Mac DeMarco this thing that really helped this. Instead of recording each bit of one song over a long period of time, record one bit of as many songs as you can in a short period of time. So if I've got a free Saturday afternoon, I'll just record every single guitar part I've been working on. Then that night I'll record all the vocals, then all the basslines a few days later, etc. It made the quantity of my work way larger, and weirdly enough I felt like quality wasn't even sacrificed much at all.

Same. I've been "working" on an EP for four years. What!? Sounds absurd when I say it... the songs are all there, the parts are all there. Where's the damn EP?
That was my point of view exactly! When I was first uploading stuff on youtube I was a bit frustrated by not having an audience so I remember googling something like "Why does no one give a shit about my music" and I came across this article saying how i can take advantage of this situation by freely experimenting on stuff so then I just recorded my first album solely on my old phone, no mixing or mastering whatsoever and published it. It's been a year since and now I feel like I have improved quite a bit since then and I'm gonna release my second one in a month or two.
The idea of working quickly is sooo important. I just released my first project (Ben Po - Warmth) and I made one of the songs, ‘Night’ in like 90 minutes because I was working like a mad man. I edited after but I think it’s super important to work with the creative energy/spark quickly so that you don’t lose it.
I encourage everyone to make music of what ever kind, these days genuine human art is more needed than ever. Ive been producing electronic music for years now but i'd been losing interest in making music since 2023. I bought a 4 track cassette tape recorder n picked up a guitar, started making music purely for fun and putting my tapes on a website that nobody really knows about. Its really freeing to explore new musical territories and experimenting for the sake of enjoyment
This came at the perfect time, so for that my friend, thank you!! I have an album that I paid good money for to have mixed and mastered and I'm starting to get cold feet. I've already got a few of the songs out as singles, but for some reason releasing the project is scary all of a sudden. I think I've attached these expectations to the release that are weighing me down and making it seem scarier than it is. This video helped me find the courage again. The Shakes coming soon! Have a wonderful day my friend
I’m subscribing because this video really helped me. About a week and a half ago, I was struggling to finally finish and submit my music. The universe sent me this video at about 2am. After watching it, I let go of whatever fear was holding me back and uploaded my music to the world. So thank you sir!
Really resonate with this. As someone who places experimentation at the core of my process and work, sometimes I get caught up in the "does this sound good" aspect and lose touch with what makes the process so great which is the experimentation.
I’m amazed at how you are putting out so much music. I rate this. I thought releasing 2 albums this year was too much. Like why am I sitting on all this music?!!!!!!
Dude I just gotta say this life advice really spoke to me today. I haven't been releasing music for almost 4 years, and I finally decided to stop sitting on my music last week and release again. Then I find this video, and feel so encouraged by what you said. I followed your page and I look forward to diving into your discography. Thank you.
Thanks a lot this really motivates me to release my music soon. I'm working on a album called 'Z11' wich means 'Self' is you pronounce the 11 in Dutch. It's gonna contain 11 songs all with a duration of 1:11 in wich I explore and have fun with music and art by myself
Synchronicity is SUUUCH a cool thing having led me here to hear your words of encouragement just when I needed them most‼️👊🏻 The entire video was spot on for my current situation, even at 62 years old and being a musician of 50 years. It was that last one minute and 25 seconds however that plugged DIRECTLY into a me and the scenario I literally just faced. Impeding my own "flow" by INSISTING an older album of 11 songs was remixed/remastered, and released, but it was a monumental undertaking that would've meant over 300 hours of mixing. But I have lived the words you said in that last minute of this video, and they are very true, for as I closed down that project and opened up the DAW, an amazing new song that I knew was sitting there in the back of my mind was blown down on to tracks complete with four part vocal harmonies in roughly 45 minutes💪🏻 Thank you for keeping the "rogue" element of music alive, encouraging others as I always have to keep their heads down and play what they love . For me, the instrument is placed over my heart…not laying on my eyeballs, so that what resonates through it is true❤️🔥 Be well my Brother👊🏻 Thank you again‼️ Cheers, Wolf🐾
i freakin love your mentality. as someone who’s been begging themselves to record for the past year and only making a few songs, this video made me really happy. kinda like a reminder of all the stuff i told myself to feel more comfortable with being so new but sometimes you just gotta hear it from someone else lol
thank you for this. i get in my own way far too often. time to create! edit: the "people like us" hit hard at the end. happy i stumbled across your channel brother :) I'm about to go make a harsh noise wall (2 hours later) made a badass harsh noise 2 minute track! experimented with textures and layering. uploaded it to soundcloud. i feel quite accomplished. keep creating yall
Currently having the longest wwriters block I've ever had but I have two albums that are ready to drop but I'm too overwhelmed. This video is exactly what I needed. I love you brother
You're right. Don't overthink things. It's all about that momentum while creating, like lightning in a bottle. You have to capture it while you have it. Good video
Brother, I'm from Mexico and I changed my name just yesterday because I felt like I was no longer moving forward, I wanted to learn other things and I had other interests, I changed my name to MkBleed and this video helped me a lot to understand this process. I also send you my regards and thank you. you gave me a little clarity and encouragement in all this sjaksjaj
Very often i'm quite stuck between wanting to do this approach and dont releasing anything until youre actually happy with what you put out. I tend to lean more on the latter side so each release feels more special and doesn't get lost or drowned out in an endless wave of filler tracks. I'm also quite self critical and have trouble "finishing" things so yeah theres that : )
I feel like a good middle ground is to fully produce a lot of songs but to not release most them. I also want when I release music for it to be special but that's prevented me from fully producing a lot of songs out of fear of not doing it well enough when I should really just go for it and see which ones are good enough afterwards
i love how this doesn’t only apply to music but to any other form of making something. you definitely improve by making large quantities of something “bad” over one piece of something “good”
I completely subscribe to your philosophy! I have released 15 EPs and 5 albums over the past 5-6 years. The music does nothing good being kept on a hard drive in my drawer. It should rather be out there, potentially for someone accidentally stumble upon it, and maybe reach out… I always say “Don’t overthink it” Just write, record and release! And the more you write, the better chance of writing good stuff! Keep it up! I am! It’s become a lifestyle!
Dude I did the same thing and I've learned so much and recently I've wiped everything (partly due to a dispute with my distributor) and now I'm starting anew with the Knowledge I've Gained and I feel like this will be the real start of me Making music fresh starts are important
Thank you for inspirational message. I will follow you, and make music like you said here. Not trying to do what everybody else doing. Jesus bless you!
wow. what a great video. ive been wanting to make, and record music since i was a teenager. i love music and i live for it. ten years later i'm twenty two and i havent done SHIT! i've never written a single song. the other day i recorded a few 50 second-long improvisations on my guitar recorded off my cellphone. a week later i find your video. you've kind of tapped into my 'soon-future mindset' for making and recording music. this is such a beautiful video. it's almost telepathic the way you represent my thought process. youtube knew what they were doing when recommendung me to you. great stuff, man. you've got such a great mind and i understand your emotion and your message. i think things are lining up for you well, my friend. it's so strange that this video has found me at the right time.
Exactly. You can make music in any way you want, however you want. And the possibilities can be overwhelming sometimes, but there's really no right or wrong way to do it. Very insightful vid.
Hey Jonny, You won't believe it, but after years of doubting my own artistic abilities, your video inspired me to finally export a song and start the process of releasing my first single! And that's not all - I'm planning to release a full album of 11 songs that I wrote this year, recorded at home with just a pair of mics, an amp, and some pedals, and then mixed and mastered on my computer. I just wanted to drop a quick note to say hello and express my sincere gratitude. Your video was exactly what I needed to see at the end of 2024. I'll be sharing more details about the release soon, so keep an eye out for "Marte!" on music platforms. Best, Gustavo
man you make it sound so easy to just... try, y'know. thanks for this vid, theres a lack of pressure being conveyed that i want to internalize as much as possible.
I absolutely feel rejuvenated in validation and a new found confidence about all the years I’ve journeyed into finding myself in music. I’ve probably made an entire life’s work discography and still have not posted a single thing…there was never a straight forward guidebook to the process of sticking my nose into a world/ industry where I could feel validation or appreciation for the visions that burn within me…as I had no background or credentials to hold structure for anyone to rely on or take me seriously it’s very much debilitated me in my growth as an artist and a human . This video I believe has finally found me and set me free……I feel the weight suffocating me has been lifted and the sensation of long lost self confidence is like, new blood rushing through replenishing every vein in my body this is the greatest gift to bestow upon someone. As this personally pertains to deeper suffering and subconscious awareness in life as well for me…very pivotal moment for me this video and I’m sure for others as well.
You’re absolutely right about everything. I’ve had put off creating for some time and working on my new project now with a “get it done” mentality. As a perfectionist is a gruesome process to experience but I’m so much closer and happier with each step im getting closer to completing my goal. Stop worrying and keep doing what you love. 💕 thank you so much for posting this video. It’s encouraging and confirming that I’m going in the right direction.
Really inspiring. I’ve always struggled starting to make music as I would start maybe doing a guitar riff or something then listen to it 3 times and completely scrap it. I always feel like there’s a certain standard I should adhere to or I’ll here something out loud that sounded way different in my head. I think the key thing is i just need to start and be alright with failing. Then keep trying again.
This is a really great insight, good work. How often do you hear the stories about super famous songs that were written in less time than they could be played in. It's far too easy to get up in micro-analysing your own stuff because you're there for every step of the journey. I find I'm always chasing my tail, trying to get something finished before I get sick of it, not even sick of it, just too used to hearing what I've done and losing that initial spark. If you can keep that initial magic that comes with an idea all the way through to the end of a project you're winning.
Wow, what an inspiring video. I have been in the perfection bias trap for ages. This is exactly the kick in the butt that I needed. No idea how the YT algorithm spat this into my feed, but I am highly grateful. Will check out your work. Thank you kindly!
I'd love to produce and release 40 albums in 5 years but unfortunately I've had a terrible accident, fell off my bike, and now I'm paralyzed... still, I can only dream, and Jonny Mozza helps me do just that! Sorry, just about every video has a post like this, I couldn't help myself...I like the way Jonny gets a little ramped up when talking about Bob Dylan. Love you Jonny.
Im lately discovering a lot of low subs channels and yours feels to me like the indie musician that got friends, family and work to do and do it happily, rather than the famous bussy sad musician. Maybe im just crashing out but I like the motive of the video. Thanks for the inspo
Great video and message. Thank you. Some years ago, a good friend suggested I joined a songwriting festival -FAWM (February Album Writing Month). The aim - write 14 songs in February. I had never written a song before. It was life changing. I still do it each year and other songwriting festivals. I agree about getting songs out there and the same applies to other arts. And, as you said, this can be a great way to learn a musical concept/scale/etc. Thanks again.
Great video. I struggle all the time with "should I release this? Is it good enough?" type thoughts. I really appreciate your spirit of encouragement. It has giving me a little confidence boost to go duel with the glowing red light. Thanks!
Man, thank you for these videos. I like how down to earth you are, without being pushy about chasing success, like much of the motivational stuff can be. So refreshing and inspiring!
so glad i came across this video because i be overthinking about my own music sometimes and i be thinking about how like i needa make my music as good as possible but then i see a trash artist or something on long those lines i dont like blow up and i just be wondering like what if i just start not caring and just dropping whatever so this really changes how i view my music but honestly im still tryna find my sound so thats apart of the problem im having right now but like i said im glad i came across not just the video but the channel cause this guy is dope and speaks on good topics
Thank you for making this Johnny. You’re a real gift to the world and I’m so glad there are people like you in it. You encourage me to keep writing songs. Stay blessed.
I love this. I was scrolling through RUclips yesterday when I saw your video recommended and really wanted to watch, resonating with the title a lot. For whatever reason the page reloaded and I didn't see your video. I tried to search what I could remember of the name (make your album now, record your project then worry later, things like that) but was only finding videos on Kendrick Lamar's new album hahahahaha I went back to the home page and scrolled until I found it to no avail. Today I am watching a cooking recipe to make for lunch and voilà your video appears in the corner of my eye and I am glad I clicked it. I don't really know too many people who approach music and composition in a similar way to me. I as well love to naturally allow my curiosity to lead me through music, using music theory simply as a playground filled with ideas I am constantly exposing myself to but not necessarily sitting down with and trying to absorb. I have also gone many years sticking to certain scales, sounds, patterns that I've learned from so many genres of music, and my preferred method of absorbing this knowledge is by applying it into a composition. So to speak, if I end up using it well and memorably, it ends up being a song I am proud to show to people and stays with me (in essence, keeping that musical concept that sparked the idea in the first place to become more muscle memory and part of my natural vocabulary when writing other songs). I even try to take that philosophy to other areas of life where I think I apply too little of this curious freedom. In music, I never worry that I don't know enough or that I know too much. I know that I can get around to anything and everything in due time and there is no rush, it is fun to sit down and dissect a new musical concept for me so the longer it takes, the better! hahahahah With all that said, what I was needing was the push to RELEASE said music which is an entirely different beast on its own... Cheers and thank you kindly for this insightful video
I loved the message man, as a musician and artist myself, I think I learned the most when I was just trying to figure out what sounded good to my ears. However, I've put out only like 5 songs, because I'm very selective with my work, and it's been 4 years since I made my first real songs, and now I've realized that even though they sound good, they lack profundity and intention, like, I just wanted them to sound beautiful, with no expression whatsoever. Now I focus more into the expression of feelings and concepts (not necessarily with words), because that's more important to me now, nevertheless, I've come to realize that I should put all my other music out just to show who I was in the past and not let that be erased in the paper, because I cannot guarantee myself that the stuf that I like now is going to be the same forever... Anyways, I found you by accident, but you've got a strong message and a soothing voice! Take care!
Last year, I released 4 albums every 3ish months: LOVE, Broken Hearts & Parking Decks, Please Don’t Honor Me, & Elephant Graveyard. It boosted me, heavily. This year I put out as many singles as I could, including a music video from a track last year, but I realized that I did better when I released albums instead of singles. So this year, I’m doing it again. Good luck my people🖤
This is perfect advice. It's how innovation & change happens. It's also been my approach since the 1980s. And it's worked quite well ...for some of of my personas.
I did exactly this when I was starting out almost 30 years ago. Just made loads of albums that I thought sounded amazing in the moment, and realized only contained one or two gems each, then compiled those gems and continued on... I have 9 or 10 of those albums just sitting around, but lately I've been in a bit of a rut because eventually I got more and more perfectionist until I couldn't complete anything. Thanks very much for this- I need to follow your advice (and my own) again and just blast stuff out.
Yes! I totally agree with you!! I argued with one of my band members about him not practicing and experimenting enough to get inspired and do stuff, he thought that to get inspired you have to wait for it. But that's not how it works, it is scientifically proven too! One should always experiment and publish
Yes. I started recording my own music as a kid in the 80s, and for over a decade I was really productive, just having fun, barely thinking about it, until it became a career and I got serious about it, then I let my obsession for mastering the details kill the buzz. I had to go thru the 30 year journey until I really learned this. Just do whatever, you win some, you lose some, who cares. It’s just music, it’s a moment, you get better at it naturally
Hey, I enjoyed your video and all your tips and advice, really appreciate it man. I've been making a lot of music and uploading it in the past years, however I'm not so good at marketing or promoting my stuff, so I kinda stopped writing, composing and making music because most of the material I had wasn't even listened by my family, friends, and my Spotify account, SoundCloud, etc. have been always a kind of lonely and solitary places. However I think I should continue with making music anyways... I feel like little by little I'm replacing music by other hobbies that I like, for instance programming, game development, etc.
Well done. I've been working on my art work and this applies as well. I'm also a musician and you inspired me to incorporate the music with my art and see where it goes and not be intimidated to let it out! Thank you for this! Best whishes!
Workin on it. I really appreciate an improvisational approach to music, allowing more "happy accidents" to happen when playing. It's a thin, disastrous line though. Definitely one worth exploring, either way. Glad I found your channel. Subscribed.
That was actually inspiring, thank you. Since I started my music degree I couldn't get myself to do as much music as I wished, can't tell exactly why tho, I'm just feeling numb I guess.
I watched a video on how “testing” yourself helps you retain things better over just studying. You can learn all the tips and techniques, but until you actually apply it you won’t progress. Thank you for this video 🙏🏽

'doesn't need to sound good it needs to sound like you' ♥♥♥
And then we remember the creative journey is what it's all about x
I knew from the thumbnail that this man had some wisdom, great advice, thank you!
@gewoonjohan8116 angels numbers
Sounds super cool lmk when it drops please 🙏
3:31 less than half way through this video - I really love the honesty. Thanks man 🤍
Synchronicity is SUUUCH a cool thing having led me here to hear your words of encouragement just when I needed them most‼️👊🏻
The entire video was spot on for my current situation, even at 62 years old and being a musician of 50 years.
But I have lived the words you said in that last minute of this video, and they are very true, for as I closed down that project and opened up the DAW, an amazing new song that I knew was sitting there in the back of my mind was blown down on to tracks complete with four part vocal harmonies in roughly 45 minutes💪🏻
Thank you for keeping the "rogue" element of music alive, encouraging others as I always have to keep their heads down and play what they love .
For me, the instrument is placed over my heart…not laying on my eyeballs, so that what resonates through it is true❤️🔥
Be well my Brother👊🏻
Thank you again‼️
Cheers,
Wolf🐾
i freakin love your mentality. as someone who’s been begging themselves to record for the past year and only making a few songs, this video made me really happy. kinda like a reminder of all the stuff i told myself to feel more comfortable with being so new but sometimes you just gotta hear it from someone else lol
thank you for this. i get in my own way far too often. time to create!
edit: the "people like us" hit hard at the end. happy i stumbled across your channel brother :) I'm about to go make a harsh noise wall
(2 hours later) made a badass harsh noise 2 minute track! experimented with textures and layering. uploaded it to soundcloud. i feel quite accomplished. keep creating yall
Currently having the longest wwriters block I've ever had but I have two albums that are ready to drop but I'm too overwhelmed. This video is exactly what I needed. I love you brother
i just found this in my recommendations. thank you man. i needed to hear some of this.
I also send you my regards and thank you. you gave me a little clarity and encouragement in all this sjaksjaj
it feels so good to hear someone else speak your own thoughts out loud. thank u for sharing your mind with us Jonny !!
this video hit my reco at the perfect time. really resonated with you man thank you!
One album has taken me 25years...😂❤
Slow down bro
@@DogSaveTheBreen dude I gotta hear this
@@DogSaveTheBreen rly
🥴
Very often i'm quite stuck between wanting to do this approach and dont releasing anything until youre actually happy with what you put out. I tend to lean more on the latter side so each release feels more special and doesn't get lost or drowned out in an endless wave of filler tracks. I'm also quite self critical and have trouble "finishing" things so yeah theres that : )
I feel like a good middle ground is to fully produce a lot of songs but to not release most them. I also want when I release music for it to be special but that's prevented me from fully producing a lot of songs out of fear of not doing it well enough when I should really just go for it and see which ones are good enough afterwards
i love how this doesn’t only apply to music but to any other form of making something. you definitely improve by making large quantities of something “bad” over one piece of something “good”
You don’t know how much this video means to me man, thank you and god bless you man, really needed to hear this
great job on this video i respect your creativity and it really spoke to my soul about how I should go about my music career.
Dude I did the same thing and I've learned so much and recently I've wiped everything
(partly due to a dispute with my distributor) and now I'm starting anew with the Knowledge I've Gained and I feel like this will be the real start of me Making music fresh starts are important
Sober and inspiring, thank you for sharing 🙏
This is the most sense I've heard about this subject in a lifetime - thank you ❤
💗...Sooo TRUE!
Kinda like what Yann Tierson says to just, "🎶Play with the SOUND!"🎶
I genuinely thought I had never related to a person more in my life when watching, then you started talking about Syd. God bless this man.
Thank you for inspirational message. I will follow you, and make music like you said here. Not trying to do what everybody else doing. Jesus bless you!
wow. what a great video. ive been wanting to make, and record music since i was a teenager. i love music and i live for it. ten years later i'm twenty two and i havent done SHIT! i've never written a single song. the other day i recorded a few 50 second-long improvisations on my guitar recorded off my cellphone. a week later i find your video. you've kind of tapped into my 'soon-future mindset' for making and recording music. this is such a beautiful video. it's almost telepathic the way you represent my thought process. youtube knew what they were doing when recommendung me to you. great stuff, man. you've got such a great mind and i understand your emotion and your message. i think things are lining up for you well, my friend. it's so strange that this video has found me at the right time.
just wanna say this is an extremely high quality video man. thanks for making it
Exactly the message this perfectionist needed to hear at this point in his album creation process.
Exactly. You can make music in any way you want, however you want. And the possibilities can be overwhelming sometimes, but there's really no right or wrong way to do it.
Very insightful vid.
Love this post - so much honesty and truth here. I look forward to hearing more of your stuff. Thanks for making this 😊
all of your videos are a win man, thank you
Hey Jonny,
You won't believe it, but after years of doubting my own artistic abilities, your video inspired me to finally export a song and start the process of releasing my first single!
Best,
Gustavo
Great tips man. I make an album per year. This year? I dropped 2! Been releasing an album per year since 2020. Cheers!
man you make it sound so easy to just... try, y'know. thanks for this vid, theres a lack of pressure being conveyed that i want to internalize as much as possible.
feels like the algorithm aligned me with a soul brother. preach! this is good stuff. 👍
Im currently finishing my 4th album, and I feel like the Lord wanted me to see this video.
Thanks for filming this and for your insights .
I find too much listening while the song isn't done to be the big killer. Super happy you got something from the vid!
Paranoid is a great example of one of those stories. Completely agree with everything you're saying.
I just started making music maybe yesterday and this is a beautiful video thank you. Made me throw my guitar on asap.
Thank you man, I needed this video. I love your vibe dude!
Im lately discovering a lot of low subs channels and yours feels to me like the indie musician that got friends, family and work to do and do it happily, rather than the famous bussy sad musician. Maybe im just crashing out but I like the motive of the video. Thanks for the inspo
this quite literally may be my favorite video i’ve ever seen. thank you. i’ve needed to hear exactly this for 5 years.
This was everything I need to hear at the moment, thank you Jonny!
Love this video Jonny
Thank u so much for this. I really needed it. Been studying on producing music like crazy lately this was really helpful thank u💪
so glad i came across this video because i be overthinking about my own music sometimes and i be thinking about how like i needa make my music as good as possible but then i see a trash artist or something on long those lines i dont like blow up and i just be wondering like what if i just start not caring and just dropping whatever so this really changes how i view my music but honestly im still tryna find my sound so thats apart of the problem im having right now but like i said im glad i came across not just the video but the channel cause this guy is dope and speaks on good topics
I know that I can get around to anything and everything in due time and there is no rush, it is fun to sit down and dissect a new musical concept for me so the longer it takes, the better! hahahahah
With all that said, what I was needing was the push to RELEASE said music which is an entirely different beast on its own...
Take care!
You just defined art. Dig it. Bravo 👏
Good luck my people🖤
Mate, paulstretch is one of my favourite fx eveeeer ...and audacity in general is wicked, I like your attitude, and share it 🤘
This is perfect advice.
Such great advice! Thank you for sharing your insights and thoughts around making music to explore. It’s giving me inspiration!
I feel like little by little I'm replacing music by other hobbies that I like, for instance programming, game development, etc.
hi, this is a phenomenal video and i appreciate your outlook on music and creation. thank you for contributing greatly to my inspiration
Well done. I've been working on my art work and this applies as well. I'm also a musician and you inspired me to incorporate the music with my art and see where it goes and not be intimidated to let it out!
Thank you for this!
Best whishes!
What a wonderful way to look at it. I think I will apply your advice to my music.
Great advice dude. Love it
much love to you and yours always!
And back!!!
