- Muriatic acid will damage the metal drain trim around a bathtub or shower drain. When I use muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to remove hard water stains from a bathtub or shower pan, I use plumber's putty tape to protect the metal drain trim from damage by muriatic acid.

Cleaning without damaging is not easy and over the years my construction/restoration business made some awful mistakes that cost me a lot of money and frustration.
Here is what worked for me:
1. Prevention by the homeowner during weekly cleaning will help immensely (usually does not happen).
2. The use of a citrus based cleaner works great and without damage (be patient and let it sit for at least 15 min)
3. Use a steam cleaner (McCulloch makes a good one and it's cheap).

Yep, I tried a wallpaper steamer to remove some of the stains and the soap scum embedded in the FRP walls, and it laughed at me. I don't think the lunatics that owned this home before me EVER cleaned a darn thing. I've got evidence to prove it. ;) Muriatic acid has worked well on the soap scum, and it's trying it's best on the old, ingrained hard water stains. It will take some time, but I'm just upping the percent of muriatic acid until I find the sweet spot. I love that shower pan because it's old, well built and no leaks, so I don't want to replace it with a thin, flimsy and cheaply made new one. I rehab, as I can, to preserve the well-made products of yesteryear.
@@frugaldiy1 Bless you sister! Yep, just step up the acid ph until it works. It's not going to (shouldn't) hurt the FRP. You and I are cut from the same cloth when it comes to restoring old things. I enjoy that!

This has nothing to do with this video but I'll try asking in this comment section. Is it possible to clean out galvanized steel pipes used as water supply lines? They have built up rust inside. And then maybe seal the inside of the 3/4" pipes with epoxy? I am a recycle, reuse fanatic myself and hate having anything trashed. But maybe it's better for me to just re-pipe all the galvanized to PEX. Sorry to ask here.
No go on the rehab of the galvanized pipe. They rust internally and can cause a leak. I don't like PEX and will never use it unless I have no other choice. I'm a HUGE fan of cooper pipes. ;)

I wish I knew earlier how risky some products are. I damaged the surfaces of my shower fittings by using cleaners that were too acidic.
