After begin a fan of Zhao Lusi for more than 5 years I’ve come to realize something about some of her overreacting fan base, that they can’t stand honest criticism of her work.
I personally like her and I think she a good actress who still needs to put more effort into the character development. I’ve seen many of her works like “Oh my emperor” was my first then Mr. Ling, but my favorites are “Love like the galaxy” and “Who rules the world”. So far the actress is very beautiful and can actually act but in some cases she’s not getting it right.
The story of the pearl girl was a bad writing and also the way they portrayed and directed characters. The only characters that really stands out are the female lead and the kid. I remember wishing in “the long balled” seeing the second couple work in another drama together as main leads, and honestly I would rather rewatch the long balled where Zhao lusi and him played in a romantic relationship with very good characters development.
I agree with many topics that Avenuex said. I feel bad for the two main leads who took that drama. Especially the main lead even though he really is good which those kind of roles and he is a very good actor, he literally got criticized by those Zhao lusi “fans” that he isn’t handsome enough like Ryan Ding etc.

Just remember this is AvenueX’s channel so videos are about her personal opinion. Whether you gonna watch it or not it’s still up to you. What she dislikes maybe is good for you, or what she likes maybe you actually don’t like..
But on this drama I agree with her. I watched til eps 11, it felt so slow (eventho I do watch slow paced dramas like the story of minglan, which is one of my favorite drama), this one just doesn’t give me the will to continue watching. I loved zhao lusi in love like the galaxy and hidden love, but not just this one

Exactly. A drama that somebody watch episode after episode with interest is a "good" one ....for that person, and a drama which is boring, is not, but an other person will think otherwise, simply because we are not attracted to the same same type of story, genre, actors, ect. It's really a matter of taste. Everyone has its own, and AvenueX is no exception.

@@TianaS-d8n same thing can be said about TSOPG. You get the heroine with a very sad background who's intelligent, strong, and everyone wants to bully. Then with the help of ML and others along her way, she grows. Singer appearance changed from poor humble girl to strong woman. Why are people saying that TSOPG is new story? Is just your typical femalecentric business trope. We've had ton of those already.

@TianaS-d8n I don't understand what you meant in the 1st sentence. It's not just the ending that matters... the journey and how it gets there is important, or else why would anyone waste hours of their life watching a 30-40-episode drama, we watch it for character development, the story, the world and many more. If I just want to know the story or ending then I'll just read a summary or watch the last episode. Even the most predictable story can be interesting if the execution is done well. Technically, all love stories are the same, right? They meet, fall in love and then either have a happy or sad ending. But we watch to know the process: how they meet, how they fall in love, their journey towards the end, that's what interesting....

I live in the US so I guess I don't understand all the conflict between the viewers of the two dramas mentioned in the comments below. If I don't like a drama that one of the actresses is in, that doesn't mean I hate the actress, okay? And if a viewer doesn't like the voice or the appearance of an actor/actress, that's fine, but as far as I can tell there's no need to become personally insulting. If an actress is in a production and you don't like her looks or her voice, then don't watch the production. Problem solved! I don't think the two actresses mentioned here are in need of netizens to defend them, and I don't think they spend much time worrying about which netizens don't "like' them. This drama made me realize why I cannot enjoy Zhao lusi acting, no matter how much I love her real life personality.
It’s so obvious that Lusi either doesn’t understand or try to understand the nuances of the character she is assigned to (in every role she has played so far including this one); she just act according to the script, where she needs to cry, she cries the same way she has done in every drama of hers, where she needs to act cute, she acts cute the exact same way, where she needs to smile, she smile the exact same way. And as a result, no matter how much she tries in those moments, she just ended up feeling like a caricature of a person instead of a real human being that could exist in real life.
Like the way her character here was initially an overworked, abused, oppressed slave, but then not much later, she is seen laughing and smiling like a bright girl who was raised in a loving, caring environment with nothing much to worry for (u know the typical bright girl act Lusi put on in every drama). An actress who actually understand her character would never act like that. Naturally, those kind of abused people are very much hard to open up in their life and build a wall around themselves all the time, and it usually takes a really long time and many genuine love from others to become a carefree person again. (Like the mother character in Twinkling Watermelon)
In the same way, if u compare her character in Hidden Love at her teenage years and then in her twenties, u will find no trace of growing up whatsoever because of the exact same way she plays it. (Compare it to female lead in Go Ahead where you can clearly see the difference. Or in Some Day or One Day.)
People generally think of grand crying scene and miserable scene when they think of great acting, but those moments, without nuances of a character and great understanding and intelligent execution by a person portraying the role, are just technical aspects of acting and will never be able to make us believe that what we are seeing on screen is not an actress putting on an act, but rather a real breathing human being that exists or has existed at some point in time or place in universe.

    • @Dillydally4059
      @Dillydally4059 14 дней назад +42

This is so true. The foundation of her characters are the same in every drama she’s done. The way she laughs, cries, and gets mad is the same most of the time. I’ve seen actors who are known to play the same kind of role over their career change the nuances of their characters so that it doesn’t get boring, but Lusi does not do that well enough. Even her aesthetic remains the same or similar in most of her shows, they’re not distinct. Once you notice this it’s really hard to not think about it as you watch her.
I was a huge fan of hers for 3 years straight, following her daily updates and waking up early to watch her shows, but after a while you realize that you won’t be getting anything groundbreaking to watch. Her shows are unfortunately hit or misses. But she IS really funny so some of her dramas are really entertaining.
Also, why is it so hard for drama makers to let’s their actors get dirty for a role. You can tell that even the dust on her face was placed for aesthetics. This problem is not specific for this drama or Lusi. 99% of shows make their actors look perfect ALL THE TIME and it gets old.

Omg this! Thank you I ve been saying this for years! Screaming crying throwing up with big expression doesnt equal to great acting. Someone who understands true acting is someone who can act out a character as a living breathing person that experience different phase as she progress through the journey you need to go by the logic of the character that you play and study her background and how she would react in a certain situations. All actors and actresses have to draw from their life experiences to act, so the acting will be more or less the same in every drama unless they are playing two polar opposite characters (like the good naive one and the evil one). It’s those nuances they add, those little behaviors and quirks they put in that are appropriate to the character, that makes each role different for the good actors.

@@RabiaDini yess.. I mean, those grand display of emotions CAN be good acting as long as the rest of the performance is consistent with the logic and circumstances of the character just like you said. That’s why I love both macro-acting, the kind of acting you see getting nominated for Oscar, as well as micro-acting, the acting so subtle that it doesn’t even feel like acting but requires great skill nonetheless.
But here, lusi seems to play two entirely different character: one is shy, demure, closed off and can’t-hold-eye-contact type of person and one is outgoing, bright, and easy-to-smile type of person at the same point in time and the latter totally goes against the character’s logic.

The Story of Pearl Girl = I thought the script was written in a very boring way for such an exciting subject matter, and the characters were unappealing and very boring.
Love Game in Eastern Fantasy = It was interesting at first, but I lost interest towards the end.
In conclusion, I gave up on both. I think both my standards are worse than expected.

The Pearl Girl Story series is highly acclaimed by members of the Chinese film industry!
The historical drama “The Pearl Girl Story” produced by Youku and first aired on November 1st has not only attracted the attention of enthusiastic audiences, but also received high praise from industry experts.
At a screening event attended by experts from the film and television industry, there was a unanimous agreement that “The Pearl Girl Story” uses realistic creative techniques to depict the growth of a female protagonist, and seamlessly blends fantasy and cultural elements. The series delves into China’s ancient Silk Road and the cultural heritage of pearls and other treasures.
It is worth noting that the series skillfully combines elements of female growth, revenge, business and romance, providing new creative inspiration and a new approach to break away from the formula of repetitive historical dramas.

Thank you for your feedback it’s insightful and on point. You’re right that Duan wu appears too healthy for someone who spends her days diving for pearls, but with the fantasy elements in the series, like mermaids, realism isn’t the focus. Duan wu’s portrayal is meant to highlight her beauty and strength, which aligns with the show’s emphasis on emotional depth and the extraordinary, rather than a realistic depiction of the harsh life of a pearl diver. It’s about showcasing resilience and fantasy, not aiming for strict realism, although some touches of realism would make the series chef’s kiss, is ok to appreciate for what it is.

This drama needs to be watched the entirety of the story to be understood and be admired. I definitely would agree with the lack of depth in acting specially with Zhao Lusi. Her acting her is fine but not something that will evoke emotions from you unless the scene really calls for it like the killing of her friends, etc. The drama was sooo hyped that you are expecting more and youre getting this. People often forget, during drama production there are TONS of people involved in it. Script writer, producer, director, costume designer, etc. Actresses and actors are just a tiny little bit in the whole production process, and they have zero control about writing, plot, lighting, CGI etc etc. So if the plot or writing or the execution in general are flawed, then it is not in the actors and actresses responsibility. People should understand and differentiate critiques and where it were directed at, clearly not the actors, because they do WHATEVER THEY COULD IN THEIR CONTROL to bring justice to the roles. And I think, this drama production was considered a hit partly thanks to the big name of the players, they owed the players BIG TIME. You cant expect a production to be hit with sloppy writing and plot execution while only the actors have to working their ass off to play their characters, no. In the case of TSoPG, the production team especially the plot and writers are a bit lazy despite Lusi & Yuning who have been working hard on this drama 😭😭😭

En cuanto a su nuevo drama, estoy demasiado feliz, me ha encantado el trabajo de cada uno de los actores, y me parece genial que solo tenga 32 capítulos, la química entre Esther y Yuxi está en el punto. The sparkle isn't there. Male lead looks like noble prince who go down to experience things rather than be experienced business man. Female lead doesn't seem grow up to be sl.ave but a brave young lady who got unlucky and abducted to become sl.ave.
The production looks a little bit low budget. Not talking about cinematic effect, but clothes. For government ppl (the leader who wear green outfit) looks like wearing same material with commoner clothes it's odd. Same with second male lead outfit, it looks thin and tangled.

Waiting for her modern dramas, and liu yuning can do better. Hope song zu er fixes her issues so we can get te prisoner of beauty

im not into dramatic dramas since it was lusi i watch it and lusi nailed her role as duanwu even its new to her and i cried a lot because i feel her pain, also less romance to me the chemistry with the ml was lessweak tbh maybe their chemistry suits light drama. Still watching it because im interested with duanwu’s growth. All the casts did great.

Strangely enough i liked the story better before they got together. Like i wasn't really repulsed by how he treated her in the beginning because i didn't care about the romance part. What interested me was both of their development as people. She's struggling to make a life for herself while protecting the boy she cares for as a little brother. She doesn't simply lament her situation and cry about it, instead she actually actively tries to improve her life. The ml is seeking revenge for his family and we can see how other Crew members respect him which hints at how he's not necessarily a terrible person... Basically the story of their development as individuals is what made me gravitate towards this drama. But then as they got together, the focus started to shift more towards the romance part and the tropes that followed. Don't get me wrong, I love romance. But, it has to be well done without any unnecessary plot points that completely disregard the personalities that we've previously built up for the characters. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a bad or boring drama as I thoroughly enjoyed the first part but I'm not sure if I would finish it tho.

I love Lusi and i agree with you. I was super exited but it is a little bit let down i think the story is good but its depressing and let down not so much the romance i was anticipating. I’m still going to keep watching

I dropped this drama from the first episode. I just couldn't connect with the character and the whole torture scenes. Like, why are they there? What's the point? They tried to make it seem realistic, but the ocean was obviously CGI. The whole set up left a bad taste. Story-wise, they tried to make it serious, but it's really just laughable. ML's wig is soooo ugly, I'm sorry, which I find hilarious because I actually don't mind LYN's looks, but the wig is just off-putting. ZLS' make up makes her look so sleepy all the time.

Смешно читать, как можно судить о дораме, посмотрев одну серию. Это просто неприятие Чжао Лусы как актрисы. Вы просто хейтер

finally! thank you for reviewing story of a pearl girl, i have so much anticipation towards zhao lusi and liu yuning, hoping to stumble across something like love like the galaxy and a journey to love but alas--
i do love loveee the love game in eastern fantasy, i usually dislike xianxia because the cgi is either subpar or over the top, but that drama has one of the coolest cgi i've ever seen. it's lively and fun to watch.

I’m at the 20th episode of Pearl Girl and Zhao LuSi is great!😊 You can feel her strong presence, pain and sadness, and high intellect capabilities against the evil corruption. Also the male lead is doing a great job portraying a powerful strategist in taking down his opponents for revenge. He’s Always the Master and Commander over the situations. 😊 So far, I like this drama! ❤ I just hope it will have the ending that I need!

I think that it’s a shame to cap shows to 40 episodes . There should be something they need to do in order to do any show over 40 , because not all long shows are good so perhaps they need to show need ? But I watched Love Like The Galaxy which was over 40 episodes and the story was so good that it was worth over 40 episodes. But I too am finding f the Pearl girl show hard to watch . I do like the female lead . Her shows are always fun to watch. Perhaps it’s because she picks characters lose to her own style ? But I think she does well , but this show is lacking . They don’t give the characters time to build up chemistry and keep it long enough before they separate to find “ the journey back to each other “ believable

I'm enjoying LGIEF so far. The premise of why she's in the story and her protecting of the little demon are fun. Her affection for the glowering, conflicted ML is interesting. Everyone else is pretty bland at this point. As a fan of Zhao Lusi I'm finding TSOPG slow-moving but I'm sticking with it. I also have no problem with the ML having kept his name. Given that there are millions of people in China with the same name this can get really confusing in a lot of dramas. The acting is not the best. I'm up to ep 18 and it's getting really traumatic again.
