Great video, Brian! I’m really surprised how close your results were, even with all of those variables. Thank you so much for doing the boring work, so that we don’t have to.
I’ve found similar results with my Model 3 roof rack over the past several months. Relatively small increase in wattage with roof rack alone. Thanks for the video.
Charles Jutkins there is for sure negative efficiency impact with putting something on the roof rack (e.g. ski box or kayak) and there are a number of tests online that give approx loss figures. But of course this is all expected regardless of the type of vehicle. With nothing on the roof rack, there is little impact.
Nice to see that the Roof Rack itself isn't such an energy drain (looks OK as well), but that will change drastically when you actually put something on top of them, a cargo box for example.
Yeah, wind noise. I had a Taurus wagon years ago and I ended up having to pull the roof racks off because at certain speeds it would cause a drumming noise. As far as which one is causing the noise, just take the front rack off and drive the car and then come back and put the front one on and take the back one off and drive the car. That should let you know. The racks are an airfoil. Maybe the roof rack engineers need to do a little bit of tweaking to the geometry of the airfoil. Keep up the good programing and I really enjoy it. Have a good day and stay safe. Cheers, John L. in Fairlawn Virginia USA
Really appreciate this test! You are doing the test in the best way you can and it is scientific because you’re documenting your work and reporting results and commenting on your confidence level of the test itself.
Real test is with stuff ON the roof rack. Local club member added a rack and skis to their 3 for weekend trips and with the cold and added drag couldn't get over 150 miles. Due to lack of quick charging between their house and the ski slopes they had to abandon the Tesla and use a different vehicle because they couldn't go round trip
Hi Brian, do you know why Tesla isn’t letting my buy a Model Y with the referral code? Do you know when they will make the Y part of the referral program?
Remove one of the two and check for noise. Then trouble shoot from there. At that price they should be silent. Do you have a db meter app or device? How easy is it to add and remove? Putting them on only when needed would be ideal. Can they stow under in back?
Great idea I will try that. I don't have a db reader but I could use an app. They are very easy to remove and put on. Little big to store in the car though
You should get a tri-pod and drone and do more shots of the Model Y as you come and go. Your a good looking guy, but till mine comes I'd rather see the sweet ride :) aka Gray Babe.
Yep, I actually unliked the vid because of that dumbass sentiment. Lots of people seem to think they're waaaay smarter than epidemiologists in this situation.
I would like to see and efficiency test with some long surfboards or sailboards on the tesla. I saw a 3 test with a rocketpod and it was pretty good. I saw one test with the seasucker's rack and it like a 30 percent hit.
Hey Brian! Patreon supporter here... Off topic, I never saw you post a video of the TESLA logo garage letters. I want the floating 3D look as well in white and can't find them anywhere. Care to give us more details? Thanks.
One thing EV out standing is weight nearly 2x of ICE counterpart. What is the point? Heavier vehicle waste more energy stop-go cycling. For roof rack test and like kind tests - can we count record the number of stop-go cycles per each test necessary support a judgement call when two results are marching one another.
YK Chan You are either bad at math or prone to extreme exaggeration. The Model Y weighs 4400 pounds and its closest sized Mercedes GLC is 3000 pounds. How do you figure the Tesla weighs “twice as much”? Bad guess
Andrew Leavitt You’ve got me this time.I hope I didn’t lost you. We have a heavy EV placed in two test conditions, w/wo roof rack. Test1 - wo rack but stop-go cycle is more. Test2 - w/rack but stop-go is less. Frequent stop-go cycles can build up energy loss enough to bias test1 result.
I was a black belt statistician before retiring. With a single data point, you cannot get statistical significance. Likely one could easily get +/- 5% differences doing the same run 10 times, as one cannot control the lurking variables. Wind, traffic, tire resistance, road resistance and many other variables may change more than the rack affects the efficiency. If that holds, then it’s a good thing. Personally, the noise would bother me more.
How does that glass roof do with sun and glare in the summer? I've seen people sitting in them and they are shaded, but would like some real world comparison.
Did you see anyone else with me in the car. Or did I stop anywhere and talk to anyone. This is the problem with people right now. Yes it is bad out there but if you take the precautions you should be safe. I don't see any issue with driving around by yourself. Get out of your house arrest and take a drive.
Hey Brian, thanks for the reply, big fan! Just thought it was funny you saying other people should be home because the lock down was for another week yet you were out too. And if you think about it RUclipsrs are a mental essential worker, keeping people entertained or informed in this time. Keep up the good work. But at the same time, this will not be over until there is a vaccine or anti viral medication for this specific virus.Let alone if it mutates on an annual basis like the flu. We really do not know how many people have the virus as they only test people with symptoms. With most viruses you shed the infection before you have symptoms. So saying we need to get back out there is misinformation at the same time. Love the channel but we are far from this being over.
Rob Ostry Because traveling modestly over the speed limit is the flow of traffic and the limit is not strictly enforced. Ask a cop - they speed too when off duty
bhags777 There’s a layer of super heated air just below that giant glass roof but the Y has so much headroom that most people aren’t tall enough to feel it. And there’s no glare inside car because the roof is heavily tinted (just don’t look up if the sun is directly overhead).
Your range will be higher than EPA in the city, lower on highway. It's just the way EPA does testing. The average speed during EPA test cycle is only 48mph, and they max out at a speed of 60mph. Most people drive faster than the EPA max on the highway. The EPA should really change the test, given that many people look at the range number with the highways in mind for a long trip.
Im a model 3 owner, but the roof rack is shit. Try to mount two bikes on it. They will stay in V shape because if the rack curve. Its so stupid. And roof box can break because of the curve. Tesla went with design and vindresistance instead of practicabillity
Shawn Sonnentag of course speed differences are dangerous but you seem to suggest that it is up to those going the speed limit to exceed thy he limit rather than the speeders slowing down.
Great video, Brian! I’m really surprised how close your results were, even with all of those variables. Thank you so much for doing the boring work, so that we don’t have to.
I was too but I would give it a 2-3 % as I probably drove smoother with the rack on. Just to be fair, but that is still good
The noise is coming from the bugs... screaming.
How about putting a luggage carrier on the rack and test it!
I will be soon
TOMIBM That will make a big difference.
Put it on backwards as well. It’s supposed to be more aerodynamic that way. electrek.co/2020/03/24/tesla-model-3-roof-rack-box-range-efficiency/

Nice to see that the Roof Rack itself isn't such an energy drain (looks OK as well), but that will change drastically when you actually put something on top of them, a cargo box for example.

If you have wind noise with your roof rack, wrap them with cord, I wrapped bungee cord on my front rack and it eliminated all the wind noise
I find autopilot works better in the interstate left lane. The on ramps mess with it if in the right lane.
Very true
Brian,
Great video! I'll look to see if you did a noise reduction Update. :-)

Great video, nice to see you test and review all this stuff. I can’t rename my trips, I guess I am an update behind.
Brian, I really appreciate your vids. Please show mounting and removing racks. Thanks. Keep up the great work.

i1Tesla thanks, you’re the best! Why were you worried about driving with the SUP on top?
i1Tesla thanks. You’re awesome, oops oh wait, wrong guy, ha! But you really are.
The ones that are not Tesla Brand will make noise, including the whistle one
Good video Brian!
the front one has more bugs... maybe because the front one has hit all the bugs they don’t make it to the back one 🤔
Yup

Glass roof looks dope
Thank you for sharing
A lot of good content home you getting pay more for your videos, will send it to my friends to subscribe
Another great video. Thank you! I can't remember did you get the roof tinted? If not, does your head get hot when it's so sunny out?
I did not yet. I do feel a little heat
Awesome video! Will you please put a roof cargo box on the rack and test the kw/h difference?

i1Tesla that’s a shame about storage because you have such a beautiful panoramic glass roof. Was that a ceramic tint you put on to reduce heat?
Let’s roll
Nice HIMYM cut in video. "Major problem".
321 D: what is rated range of the Y?
Dirty Tesla 318 mil
I honestly thought it would be around 310, I am surprised that it was so low, nice going Tesla!
As expected...great video
I really wanted the rack but the noise is non-negotiable for me
Yo i commented one of your other recent videos, I wanted to get your opinion on the evpremiumcustoms headrest?
I think they are great. They doin't fit me because of how tall I am but he is making me a new one so I can use it upside down
Your car looks really well. Only the wooden dash does not match. That would look better in carbon or similar.
My guess was 292wh/m so I'm pretty impressed
Real question is with something on the rack, for example with a roof box
Great video. Thanks for your research 🤙🏻
My pleasure!
Any thoughts on durability with off and on a bunch of times... or is this something that should be installed and just left on there?
At one percent I would just leave it once setup . It is glass roof you know.
They don't look flat so my roof box won't fit?
Where did you get those i1Tesla headrest pillows for the back? I really like them wondering if I can get some for myself.
Nice video, but can you do one with the surfboard or SUP strapped on top?

4% impact consumption on a total tank (battery) for me.
take one off and see if the noise is better or worse, rinse and repeat

Is Tesla’s glass roof stronger than a normal car roof?
The rack mounts to metal mounting points under the glass
Probably get more of a difference if you put luggage up there.
Why do we all treat the speed limit like it is a suggestion?
Rob Ostry Because traveling modestly over the speed limit is the flow of traffic and the limit is not strictly enforced. Ask a cop - they speed too when off duty
Better question - why are speed limits set so unreasonably low that all of society ignores them?
Is that with the 21’s or 19’s? Also how’s the heat and glare with that roof?

Curious with my M3 I noticed the range was always lower than EPA range. Are you seeing same with the Y?
You are never going to get EPA range if you drive like everyone else or with climate control on. That being said the Y is very good
Your range will be higher than EPA in the city, lower on highway. It's just the way EPA does testing. The average speed during EPA test cycle is only 48mph, and they max out at a speed of 60mph. Techy James You can get either higher or lower than the EPA rating depending upon how efficiently you drive. In that respect it’s the same as an ICEV
Dom G I think totally agree. Most highways have a 70 MPH speed limit so expecting a max speed 60 MPH is unrealistic.
