In the test of the 540 it is striking that it really is a brother of the 1040 (which I cycled last year). It looks the same and where things actually start to change a bit compared to that bigger 1040 is when you look at the sides of the Edge 540. The 540 has more buttons because it has no touch. Furthermore, the top is an exact duplicate, but the bottom has the same looks but with a less premium appearance.
Garmin 540 TestThe buttons are on the outer edges and protrude a little more from the 540 and change to gray plastic instead of the metal details on the 1040 bike navigation. There is a better lid between the two buttons than on the 530 and fortunately there is now a modern USB-C charging port (instead of the micro USB) underneath. Finally, you can see the cord attachment at the bottom of the main section in front of the handlebars so that it does not clatter on the asphalt but remains attached to your handlebars if it falls unexpectedly.
