I don't get why anyone thought rednote was going to be free speech. They're very open, even without needing to translate, they operate under China's laws.
They didn't think. They're so in love with the idea of "sticking it to the government" they fail to pay attention to what they're doing in the first place
Yeah, I truly didn't understand what people were thinking with half the stuff they were saying about it. It was never going to be free speech or a spot to plan against MAGA or anything anti-government, because if it was allowed to be against the American government then people might get ideas to go against China's government. Every aspect of society is **heavily** monitored from what I remember of knowing people who lived there. RedNote was never going to be some savior or "virtual refugee" spot. Just think for a few minutes about the Chinese government, and the control they have over their citizens' lives and the infamously strict censorship. That app is under their laws.
Everyone will just have to learn how to use a VPN. We need to stop expecting everything to be so easy and handed to us on a silver platter. This country does not want us to have free speech. We're fortunate enough that Congress isnt smart enough to stop VPNs and we dont have to use something even more complicated
Most things require phone number verification now. So you at least have to have a Chinese SIM and phone number. Xiaohongshu requires phone verification but for now allows phone numbers from any country, which is uncommon for Chinese social media.
For a website, VPNs make sense to me… but an app? If it’s taken off the US app stores, how do people download it? Changing the region of your app store can cause all sorts of other issues, too.
I downloaded rednote, but for me the tiktok ban is a sign to move on from social media all together. I'll keep tiktok and rednote to have some fun every now and then but its the end of an era for me.
Social Media has been ruthlessly exploited by some of the very worst elements in society. It's wide open to being abused, which is why Trump wants to make Tiktok sell itself to one of his loyal running dogs, so HE (and president Mush) can control the narrative. Time to walk away. Stop giving billionaires money. They've got plenty.
People ain't gonna move on, it's a shame tho since tiktok's community is more closed knitted than that of shorts, and reels is plagued with vermin and practically has no moderation
@@JuxGDThey’re banning TikTok for “security reasons” but not the other American social medias that are just as terrible, if not worse, for your privacy. Also, Twitter and Meta platforms are censoring people a lot and promoting extreme right content and misinformation.
Elon Musk now wants to buy Tik Tok. There's no fucking reason as to why he needs to do this, he's already owning Tesla & Twitter, he doesn't need to buy ANOTHER platform. Now we don't need RedNote, because Musk is gonna turn Tik Tok INTO it! This is the new META: Make Everything Terrible Again
If he buys it, he'll own the algorithm and be able to deploy it to get even more control over people. Apparently TikTok has one of the best social media algorithms.
Mark Cuban said he’ll make or invest in a TikTok alternative that can’t be owned or shut down by anyone. I’m still not sure about further details but that’s what I heard.
Not the people who care about free speech. The thing people liked about TikTok that doesn’t apply to other big platforms is that they could freely talk about things like Palestine without “mysteriously” being deboosted.
Not really anyone that cares about actual free speech knows that reels and RUclips shorts are a poor man's attempt at that, no self respecting would call that the new home from tik tok
I thought the hype was more about Americans sticking it to their government by directly supporting an app run by the government of the same app the U.S. govt was trying to keep them from. I didn't realise people seriously thought it was for free speech. I mean... TT is hardly for free speech either 😂
No that’s it! The reason most ppl initially went to the RedBook app was to send a message to the Gov. But to also try to hold onto their sense of community TikTok gave them (bc tiktok kept a lot of ppl from crashing out) and they don’t trust Instagram, Twitter, or facebook bc of the boatloads of misinformation and censorship (again, the intention behind thetransition to RedBook was to be petty, not practical). Many are staying bc the Chinese users were very welcoming, the art content is solid, it feels like TikTok before the political discourse, and they’re willing to teach them Mandarin for free. They’re learning a lot about Chinese people and Chinese culture. If they thought that it was for free speech, they’re learning quickly it’s not that. I don’t think most ppl will stay as weeks pan out. The app isn’t for political discourse or any other things we’re used to so they’ll leave the app and go somewhere else.
'we need a new app to ruin our attention span' 'what about insta reels? RUclips shorts? Any of the other 500 apps that are in English and infested with American culture already?' 'hmm... The people there are nice and some that I follow are trying to teach new people like me. I personally enjoy it, and it's been safer than Tiktok and Insta reels. Of course, there's some iffy things like censoring and everything - but again, this is China based. But again, personal opinion is personal opinion. I like it, you don't have to. Good day :)

I agree. Also, I'm not going to bother learning another language. I already tried Japanese and Korean. Mandarin is also said to be the hardest language to learn! I hear Neptune is another alternative.
Don't think anyone went to rednote for free speech considering we all know about the Chinese government and their rules/regulations. It's probably just protesting against the us government by seeking a non-american alternative. I just wish that people were actually speaking about the issue at hand more than just "what's your favorite tiktok before the app gets banned?? 🤪"
