Knights Hospitaller Island: Medieval Rhodos ⚔️

- ■ RHODES, GREECE: As one of history’s most contested and thus fought over islands, Rhodes, which today is part of Greece, is one of Europe’s hidden gems if travelling to historic places is your forte. It is still a well known holiday destination but this incredible island doesn’t get the same publicity as Europe’s other tourism heavyweights.
So since I am in Rhodes for the second summer in a row, I figured I’d do my bit in changing just that.
Ancient Rhodes was host to one of the earliest advanced civilisations of the Mediterranean prior to the Bronze Age collapse. A millennia later it was responsible for one of the 8 wonders of the ancient world: the colossus of Rhodes which guided ships safely into its famed harbour.
Minoans, Dorians, Persians, Athenians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Italians and now Greeks finally again have all ruled this island.
I skipped over one of the most prominent and famed conquerors though. It was not a kingdom, empire, nation or even an ethnic group with a single language.
Instead it was a military crusading order which started out as a hospital run by traders from the Italian city state of Amalfi in what was then known as the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the year 1100 A.D.
Today they are known to us as: The Knights Hospitaller or The Order of Saint John the Baptist
These bellicose monks who had picked up the sword to defend Christ and his worldly domains conquered Rhodes from the Byzantines in 1309 and ran the island for the benefit of what they called the one true faith, as their own country, for the next 213 years.
Not beholden to any nation, King or Emperor and only (nominally at least) recognising the Pope as an authority figure other than their own Grandmaster, these Knights soon became Europe and Christendom’s easternmost outpost in an increasingly Ottoman corner of the Mediterranean Sea.
This video will cover some of the fascinating historical trivia surrounding this period the Knights Hospitaller ran this island as I visit one of Rhodos' oldest goldsmiths and they show us how to make a custom piece of jewelry from scratch using an ancient Rhodian method.
In between medieval history lessons and visits to the goldsmith for updates on my custom Knights Hospitaller ring order I will also wander about Rhodos Medieval old town and show you what makes Rhodes such an awesome place to holiday in from food, to shopping, beaches and hotels ⚔️

This vlog doesn’t get the views it deserves. Incredible journey and story telling through Rhodes with some coffee ouzo in between 😀.
The detail in the ring making was absolutely awesome and amazing craftsmanship.
We must thank the Northman.
Watching it as you did is thanks enough 🙏
I guess the longest Blockbuster in history of this channel. I will order a pizza and enjoy it with a small gongo. Greets from 🇩🇪
😊😊😊
Yes! It is
🇬🇷🇬🇷hello, from the restaurant in Rhodos🇬🇷🇬🇷 coffe ouzo 😀🇬🇷🇬🇷
great and long video 👍👍🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
Cheers my friend 🍺🇬🇷
How wonderful that the old craftsman has been able to display his skills to 100,000 people all over the world and is now immortalised on video. Well done Haroldo.
A Malta video-series would be a cool follow-up to your Rhodes series
Agree beautiful place
Long-time viewer here. This was a fantastic video series. I really appreciate the effort you put into this, Heraldo!
One of the best video i watching in a long time on youtube ! *THANKS*
Often imitated never duplicated, Harald thank you for your amazing content!! Greeting from a fellow northman 🇩🇰
No matter how long your video is or which country it is... it is fully entertaining.. and your appreciation for local craft rather than Chinese exploiting craft.. really appreciate that.
You're one of the few that could pull off cats, gongo, hotel reviews, markets/steak/pork o'clock, medieval siege warfare and some serious history, all in the continuity of a few videos, now compiled. Thanks brother 👍, looking forward to your next destination.
One of the biggest fan of urs since 2019 from INDIA ❤😊 Love u Harald
Thanks 4 sticking around 🙏🏻
@@HaraldBaldr 😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow, we have just finished the greek series, I know - late to the party..and myself and my partner both agree this has got to be one of our favourite series in a long time. Straight out of the hustle and bustle of India and thrown into this peaceful paradise, what an absolute treat. From the castle and infrastructure to the beautiful little streets and alleyways, these greek videos have been educational and inspiring in equal measure. So inspiring in fact that myself and my family of pesky Brits will be visiting this beautiful place for our 2024 holiday. Cheers, Heraldo. The craftsmanship of the ring too… just wow! Long live Rhodos 🇬🇷
Thank you for the positive feedback
Woah, I didn't know cuttlefish casting used to be a thing back in the day! Your Ring Quest has undoubtedly been successful, and it makes this video stand out.
Also you're awesome for feeding those cats 😸
2 hours and 20 minutes? I guess will have to wait for the Directors cut to get the full 17.5 hours
You have cameraman/woman now who's following you for the 3rd party camera view ? Haha, epic series though and love the interactions with the Greek people and tourist.
Me and my wife waited for a day off, ordered take out and were excited for a long Harold video. It’s like a movie date night! Thank you for the content.
Wow Heraldo this was amazing. I was really into the history of the wars and how meticulously they have built the castle. I can imagine a war happening by the way you described it.
And the guys at the shop.... man the grandfather was amazing, his idea of work and craftmanship.., struggle he had to go through. Ring was BEAuuuuutifull.
Laughs by han during cuts :D LOL
Watched the entire series and now I am watching it all together again…I need to go there now.
I wish they had a website to buy these handmade rings. They look incredible and the amount of detail on them is amazing.
Best Series x History Lesson x Ring Crafting x Coffee Ozzo x Cat Feeding cheers🔥
This video series all rolled into one is epic !!! I love the history, the sights & sounds , and the creating of your beautiful ring.

Your videos inspired me to travel around the world as well, this video actually made me book a trip to Athens and Rhodos, and it was very cool.
Keep doing what you're doing.
2h20 of Harald? Epic. What a journey! Love your contents man
Haraldo you’ve done it again - the stories you shared, the parts you portrayed, the walls you scaled and the characters you conversed with….all of this while taking us on a step by step adventure in having your very own personal ring made by the Lefteris’ shop in Rhodos Old Town was awesome. Thanks for sharing. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was joking when i told you to upload 2 hour video. Im glad you did!!! Hurray
maan thank you that history lesson. i must confess i never was a fascinator of history and its battles, however, this watched this brilliant heraldo history lesson twice. i think im starting to like history
Let’s enjoy some History and entertainment from the gongo overdoso knight. Love these videos
you went to places in which even me (and most other) Rhodians have never been to hahah we dont get to chill in the medieval wall etc much, not learn all that history in school about our island :'( much appreciated Harald!
Harald, one of the fun side parts of this film is the reactions and the looks on the faces of the people who have the pleasure (whether they realize it or not) of seeing your films from a live performance perspective, especially when you are adorned in your Knights Hospitaller hoodie during your dinning shoots. I love how you defy and conquer those who might think you are loosing it. Push the envelope, noble one. Skol! Skal! Prost! Salud! Cheers! Yamas! Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum.
Been watching this channel for years and this is one of the best videos yet!!👏👏🇬🇧
Loved the historical, educational & informative elements. Even Gabriel high roller traveler would approve
Epic video. One of your best Heraldo
I’ve been watching you for years and I think I have seen every video you’ve made. You have an amazing talent of making us feel like we are right there with you in these wonderful places. Yesterday, my father passed away and I’ve been watching your Greece videos all day as a way to connect with my motherland and it has been a great comfort. Keep up the amazing work!
Again, fantastico! Must be really something to stand in that moat and look up and around and picture what it would have been like way back when. I had this amazing kind of awe when I was at the Viking burial mound on the island of Fohr, off the coast of Germany. Windy, overcast day and I was all by myself in it. Just amazing.
This was great, thoroughly enjoyed watching.
What a Mind-blowing episode love every second of it
Fantastic series in Greece, Harald!!! You really make it interesting and show the good stuff. I like the gritty details of ancient castles and towns, rather than the tourist bits. Sewers and untouched, off limits areas for me!
Hopefully the mighty crusader will bless us with new footage in the near future because his videos are the only thing i can watch on youtube without losing braincells. Keep up the progressive work dear Phuc Balderini. Greetings from Germania.
Holy cow this video was awesome! It had everything. Wisdom, information, craft, kindness, fun, excitement, awesome food and great editing.

💖💘💖 oh how we've missed your pork o'clocks and investigations! Such a fun video..thanks so much! You Rock 🤘
A huge deal of effort has gone into this video, now I run a RUclips channel (albeit tiny) I realise the time and effort that goes into editing now I do it myself, and this video is a masterpiece of editing. The sound effects, the transitions, the information you provided in the video and the story you told was also captivating. Great stuff mate! ♥️
Really great video! Especially the history part that I really appreciated. I know you said you would love to do more history videos and you should go for it as you tell the story in a great and interesting way!
Mucho disastro! RUclips did not notify me of this and it's still not listed in notifications despite being signed up for all from Harald. Much love for this video from southern, swampy Louisiana, USA.
South Louisiana here too! Terrebonne Parish, to be exact. lol
