I had this album on repeat in 1989. In an album full of hit singles (Desire, Angel of Harlem, When Love Comes to Town, All I want is You) Hawkmoon 269 is my favourite song off the album.

Never heard this one from u2 before. A lot of people don't realize how good of a singer the edge is, when he and bono harmonize it sounds amazing and has for over four decades.

I love this song but I don’t listen to Rattle and Hum as often as some other U2 albums. When that timpani first hits, the feelings come rushing back. Bono’s vocals in his prime were second to none. Larry’s rhythm stands out.Hawkmoon 269 is timeless.

@@coreygrange915 I understand, that sounds like a great time getting to hear this entire album. I wonder if they'll play it straight thru as it was on the record? Edge and Bono could do awesome falsettos back in the 90's so it'll be interesting to hear if they can still pull that off at their current age .

@@darensparks apparently they're chopping the album up throughout the setlist, which I personally prefer, adds more surprise. I seen Bono on his recent book tour and he was sounding absolutely phenomenal

This is possibly the most underrated song in the entire U2 catalogue. The harmonies in particular, and also the guitar tones underlaid by the organ, but actually everything about it is brilliant. One of Bono's best lead vocals. The album is pretty underrated too. To follow up on The Joshua Tree was essentially impossible and, in the circumstances, they did a great job. Apart from the cover of Helter Skelter, I can't think of any filler tracks here.

Yes, it is a tympani ... jazz drummer Larry Bunker played the tympani, while Bob Dylan was on the organ. The "269" of the title references the number of times they attempted to mix the song until they got their final product ... which I think is why they rarely play this song live.
The song is on the Rattle and Hum album (song #4). U2 had a pattern of cracking out an album, going on tour, and recording an album while on tour. Rattle and Hum was made during the Joshua Tree tour, which is why is has some live songs and some studio recorded songs.

Interesting. I'd read back in like 1989 that they passed a road sign that said "Hawkmoon 269 (miles)" while on tour, and that's where the name came from. I have no idea where "Hawkmoon" is though, so your take may be more accurate. It's funny because I'm certain that it was The Edge who said it came from a road sign lol.

Rattle and Hum gets some stick from certain people but the studio tracks on that album are superb.

    Angel of Harlem
    love comes to town
    all I want is you
    Hawkmoon
    heartland
    god part 2
    love rescue me
    van diemens land.
All cracking tracks. If they had of kept the live tracks and covers off the album it would have been a very good album.
Great review. Heartland is another superb album track on this album

Rattle and Hum is a mix of studio and live recordings. The studio songs were new material not officially released at the time. Desire, Angel of Harlem, All I Want is You, and Love Rescue Me were all new unreleased studio recording. God Part II may have been a Bside on a Single prior to RH?

Great rare choice, thought I was the only one who loved moody song; GOD comes from the same album (based on John Lennon's one). Other rare gems are the grungy GONE, the bluesy, profound KITE, the musically brilliant LOVE, AND PEACE AND ELSE (every band member is totally fantastic) or of course the well-known Joshua Tree song package BULLET THE BLUE SKY+RUNNING TO STAND STILL (Paris 1987 or Zoo TV Sydney 1993). Please keep it up 👍❤.
