I’m never taking this stuff. My doc convinced me I’m depressed and put me on fluoxetine/Prozac. After 6 days , I started having suicidal thoughts and ideations. I am still in absolute shock that I even considered taking my life.
I immediately stopped taking it! Hope it gets out of my system soon. It felt like my brain was being controlled by a remote control from hell.

Same story. The doctor's take when informed was that this meant he needed to increase the dosage, and that if the suicidal thoughts persisted, he could have me committed 'for my safety'. I ran away. I really struggled with the withdrawal symptoms, as I didn't taper, I stopped cold turkey. I had been a victim of child sexual abuse from the time I was a toddler until my 20s, I wonder whether taking that drug, if only for a short time, contributed to me being frigid (as in, no vasodilatation down there - the equivalent of not having an erection for a man). I had also put on a lot of weight and was craving sugar, I would have ended up obese and with type 2 diabetes.

In 1995 I was coming off a serious crack cocaine and alcohol abuse problem. I went to an outpatient substance abuse who had an in-house psychiatrist. I was prescribed paxil and buspar because I was told I had a Brain chemical imbalance. After taking the medication as prescribed for 2 weeks I remember not caring what other people thought of me or my behavior I basically lost my empathy for others. I stopped taking these medications cold turkey nine months later and I was so depressed I could not get out of bed for 3 weeks. Finally the depression started to lift and I was able to carry on with my life. From the very beginning of my clean and sober life I have attended 12-step on the regular and remain very involved in those programs. I’ve been on SSRI’s for 20 years since I was 14. I was on Paxil for 19 years and was originally put on it because of OCD. I also have Autism Spectrum (Asperger’s). For a period of time Paxil seemed to help. I was more social, my OCD symptoms approved and had less anxiety. Three years ago I had my first issue with suicidal ideations and panic attacks and everything changed. My medication up to that point seemed like it was less and less effective. My psychiatrist increased the dosage and put me on a extended release where I was only taking instant release before. While increasing the dosage helped it made me an emotional “husk”. I eventually stopped Paxil by using Prozac as a bridge. I then switched to Lexapro which helped wonderfully with anxiety but not my OCD. Recently I switched to Prozac and have had lots of issues with feeling numb, memory issues. I feel like at this point I am so finished with medication. I’ve ridden that train for 20 years and it’s time to come off. I’ve tried to come off Lexapro a couple of times and had severe withdrawal. I don’t have hardly any support from my psychiatrist. I am in the process of finding a new one. I am at the point where I am very tempted to stop cold turkey and whatever happens happens. I am tired of feeling nothing. I am scared that I might have permanent brain damage from the years I’ve been on antidepressants. I honestly can’t see how I don’t. Nothing though I can do about that but move forward. There needs to be some serious reform in the field. The only thing that gives me hope is my faith in God. If it weren’t for that I wouldn’t be here more than likely. To all those who are looking to quit, don’t give up. Keep fighting. Keep trying and keep praying. God bless you all!

oh my god i thought i was going insane. i have really bad anxiety where i twitch, get dizzy, and have very very minor panic attacks, but because of my anxiety mainly being social i was scared to go out to work, school, anything with people. i got prescribed zoloft to help. the first week i thought i was insane because for the life of me i could not cry, and felt emotionless. after that, i only had to deal with worse anxiety. after the first month though, things started to get a little better (i had thought) with my anxiety. but then i had started having the absolute worse panic attacks of my life. i wouldn’t be able to breathe for a half hour at least, and had some that lasted two hours. i thought i was going insane because one minute i would be numb and the next i feel every little emotion i had come up and i would freak out. i would have manic episodes of being euphoric then suddenly being suisidal. the zoloft has calmed my nerves down, but it has made my mental health so so so much worse. currently i’m still on it, but i’m slowly getting off of it. i never realized until now, but zoloft made everything in my life worse. i had lost someone i cared for so much because i was so emotional and angry on zoloft. i would say and do things and be numb to how other people felt. i think zoloft made me in some way manic, or triggered bipolar or something, but whatever it is i’m never ever taking percriptions again for this. also, the way big pharma made it THIS easy to be able to produce a drug that can change you is insane. i had asked my freind today what has changed in me and she said she’s not sure but i’m just not the same happy for lucky person anymore. i much rather deal with anxiety and learn natural ways to cope than feel like i’m insane. biggest advice ever, DONT TAKE BRAIN DRUGS.

I took Lexapro for several months but sometimes skipped or halved doses due to my natural adhd type disorganization.. My life almost completely fell apart in the following six months after starting Lexapro. My autism became worse, I became like manic, started giving off bad energy to people, became more rude, and started having more obsessions and rage attacks. Ended up making myself fired out of frustration, fighting with my boss, ended up getting everyone at my job fired by reporting them, losing my job, getting evicted, having to move an hour away from work and family. Now my safety net is almost gone and I hate my life as compared as to what it was before. It permanently reduced my sexual drive too.

I have been taking effexor for roughly 15-17 years now. I've got down to really low doses like 18mg for a week or two but major depression starts. It's not a natural depression but a chemical induced withdrawal depression. It's already been proven that serotonin is not the cause of depression and its alot more complex than that. It's environmental. It's the way you view the world. Depression is also a natural part of life. So is anxiety. Therapy should always be the first line of defense to help people. Not drugs that get you dependant on them for life. I don't know if I'll ever get off this drug. While I'm on it only 37.5 mgs my emotions are still numbed. Can't cry or laugh like normal people. It's no way to live life thats for sure. Then I read online that some people like to be numb. I think they are missing out on what it's like to be a human being. And I wish I could be a normal human being someday. I'm really hopeful for the future though because of the advancements with entheogen therapy. Those will have the greatest improvement out of any other drug since they grow new neurons which is essential for getting someone out of their neurosis. Coupled with therapy of course.
So I'm hopeful for the future. I just pray that someday I'll be able to get help weaning off this horrible drug the right way. Most doctors say to come off to quickly and have no clue of the horrible side effects when coming off. There is hope in that department as well though and I'll tell everyone here. It's called Outro. Look it up. It's a team of doctors that will be opening an online clinic in the US to help people get off their meds very slowly. I'm super excited about it. But I know that it will be a really long road unless I get some other type of pharmacological help to help wean off this drug effexor. I'm hoping to someday do the entheogen route once I'm totally off the effexor. Or maybe I won't. I may be just fine and not have to take anything. But I've read that microdosing is really the way to go if a person is going to utilize that kind of medicine.
Anyways peace and blessings to the world and I hope everyone that is suffering will find the peace within themselves and the God light will shine on them and illuminate their Souls.

I kept forgetting doses like take it in the morning one day and evening another and skip some days.. the forgot to get a refill and slipped several days.. did this for several months.. sex drive permanently changed, sexual energy and thought permanently decreased, and worst thing is it made my autism worse and gave me rage attacks that got me fired from jobs and burn bridges with family. Two years later after stopping it, I still easily get rage attacks. I work night shifts too and drink coffee so it all adds up, but the SSRI was a big factor.

Increasing doses of a med that CAUSES panic attacks and anxiety, irritability, emotional numbness, poor judgement and mania and suidicidal ideation is beyond unacceptable. Then, if a person tries to go off of them-- the same things occur. What could be worse? Oh, yeah-- these meds do cause GERD, muscle rigidity and pain, heart problems, interact with other common over the counter meds and even certain antibiotics. This can be deadly.

Overall, bad. She seems to, annually, go nuts for a a month or 4. Curled up on the floor bawling kind of nuts. Unable to initiate the simplest of tasks (like opening a box) kind of nuts.
For the rest of the year, obsessive behavior aimed at whatever she's doing, mainly work but one year it was the gym.
And there's the preoccupation with her meds, and no wonder there.
This year, anti-schizophrenia meds were added temporarily and I tell you, the list of possible side effects is nightmarish. That's not hyperbole, the possible side effects are a horror show in real life.
So, yeah, love and loyalty keep me trying to get her through all this but there does not seem to be any end. Local pharmacist, in a moment of truthfulness, said about SSRI's that they are way overprescribed and the best thing about them is you can't O.D. on them. (Wife tried that once, I can vouch that it's true. She ate 90 pills of lexapro).
He also said that to get off of SSRI's you have to want to get off them and the idea to get off them has to be yours... and SSRI's make you not want to get off them.

I took Prozac for a while when I was 12, and I became really physically dependent on it
It caused extremely severe mood swings/mania (I still have manic episodes from this), they were so bad that my doctor didn't feel safe weaning me off of it for as long as you're supposed to because of some of the things I was saying during my episodes
The withdrawal was unbearable, especially as a kid, and I must have been in the prodrome or something because it triggered my first psychotic episode- I am on antipsychotic meds today and I need them to function because, y'know I'm psychotic now... Prozac absolutely destroyed me and having something like that mess me up so bad at such a young age has forced me to have to figure out an entirely different path for my future... it's extremely validating to hear that SSRI victims are an actual thing that that I'm not alone in what I went through

I am desperately depentant on paxil. I have been on it for almost a decade now for social anxiety and I tried to quit 4 times. 2 of the times I did it with my doctors help trying different SSRIs and none of them stopped the withdrawals I got from stoping paxil. Just about every doctor I have talked to doesn't believe me or believes me but thinks I am exaggerating the problems. When I stop taking them I start getting the brain zaps that everyone describes, they are annoying but I can function. Then come the manic depressive mood swings which I have never had in my entire life. Again though, it sucks but I can fight through it. Then after about 3 days the severe nausea and chills/heat flashes start. At this point I am crippled because the nausea is unrelenting. I can vomit and vomit and feel zero relief to the point I am dry heaving and my diaphragm is so sore I am in tears from the pain and I get headaches from all the pressure on my head from heaving. I can't sleep it off with the assistance of a sleep inducing antiemetic like promethazine either because of the hot and cold flashes that keep me awake pulling and throwing the cover off of me. Its scary to me how much like opiate withdrawal it is. The only thing missing is the joint pains. I have made it up to 5 days but had to throw in the towell on the 6th day and refill my paxil script. Worst part is the paxil doesn't help my social anxiety anymore. To be fair it worked great for the first few years but I guess my body got use to it. There is no way I am upping my dose either.

I remember a week I had back to back anxiety attacks where I would wake up from sleep. In sleep. It used happen. Then I was put on Flouxetine, and Syrup I tappered it off over a period of 5 months. I'd never done meth. but my pupils were dimes. Also, my dog died and I didn't cry till 9 months later after i stopped the paxil then I cried non-stop for 3 months and didn't know why. horrible and addictive. now that i've tried stimulants like adderall, they are much more effective for irritability type depression and still let you cry. It scared me so bad I went on Seroquel blindly just to sleep. Seroquel turned me into something else, a different mind.
