I had a couple of silver laced wyandottes and both were hens and awesome pets. they were perhaps the cheapest pets to raise and we even got back a benifit in the form of tan colored eggs every couple of days. one bag of feed would last 3 months and is only 7 bucks here, i also gave them a slice of bread a day and other snacks to vary out their diet. both loved to be cuddled and were great for the backyard - hardly ever leaving it even though i only had two sides of a fence. finding a vet is a nightmare though because no one knows how to treat illnesses unless they specialize in bird anatomy. Kernel lived to be 4 but died of egg peritonitis and Tucky lived till nearly 12 but had to be put down because of her extreme old age and ailments that come with it. I've heard they usually live to be about 8 years old. I would get chickens again in a heartbeat but i have cats now and work too much to care for any more pets. I do highly recomend them though because they are so easy to care for. I kept mine indoors and had to clean twice daily because they are kinda like rabbits in the waste department, they dont go in one corner or try and bury it like dogs. they squat and then walk. zero sh*ts given ;)
