    Hey, nice video. I'm very jealous of how insanely calm and smooth the air is where you fly, that is extremely rare here in Ireland. Regarding the pitch bobbing issue in cruise. This is something I reported a couple of years back when I was flying the Mini Crosswind a lot. You might already be aware that this issue only seems to be experienced on twin tractor planes like the Swordfish, MCW, Albabird etc. In the end we believe that the main cause of this is incorrectly tuned rates in iNav. I've managed to get rid of this issue by running autotune and you need to pitch at full deflection for as long as you can in 1 go. Do this for a while and then see how cruise goes 😃
    Which font are you using? I've just got Walksnail to try and my Sneaky FPV Sphere font has letter M's as the AHI instead of dots... so it looks like MMMMMMMMM 😅

    Wow, best plane and OSD setup I have seen so far ... amazing, with an average of 5 A at around 40 mph (66km/h) that is very economic ... and from what I have heard this thing is so silent, you don't bother anyone when not flying very low, thanks to the twin setup. I often see s drastic offset and delay between the actual horizon and the sensed horizon, but this one is spot on.
    And the beautiful light around sunset gives the technical perfection another artistic layer.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks! The artificial horizon is always synced when viewing the live feed with Walksnail. Most of the videos you'll are made from the DVR recording with the OSD info overlayed onto it after the flight using one of the software tools available, it's the intended way to do it and what most people do... lol From what I've seen there's always sync issues, not sure what's causing them but several people have pointed it out. I'm recording the actual live feed so I get the same thing I see while flying, including the synced AHI.

There was a group of us on RCGroups that would do them occasionally, and it was always lots of fun. It was tough to get good internet back then though, especially out to a flying field. Cell service wasn't what it is now... lol That said we were mostly just flying close range stuff on 72MHz radios where there wasn't a lot going on. I usually had someone with me reading comments. • @jeremycox2291
    @jeremycox2291 Год назад +1

    The "porpoising" looks to me like the throttle controller in cruise is driving a phugoid oscillation. I say this because the climb rate is oscillating with the "porpoising" so it's not a short period mode oscillation. It's very fast for a phugoid oscillation, but this is in comparison to typical oscillation periods for full size aircraft. To fix it, I'd suggest taking an onboard flight log and looking at the elevator and throttle signals relative to the porpoising (since the airspeed and climb rate controllers are unfortunately necessarily coupled). Adding an airspeed sensor or switching to ardupilot is probably also a good approach to fixing this. Without the airspeed sensor the FC has to wait for the GPS signal to suggest what the airspeed response to throttle is, limiting how fast you can control airspeed with throttle.

    Great opening photo view (0:36) sitting out on the runway with hanger in the background. Such a clean looking build (2:57). For initial maiden and flights, this seems to be such a locked in setup. Don't think I saw any tuning/triming being done.
    Regarding proposing, at 17:45, when changing between cruise and angle modes, seeing throttle changing a couple percent. (variability overlaps, but max/min range for each differs)
    Looking (zoomed) at tail as cruising, it doesn't appear that ruddervator servos are moving. (??)
    Generally adding weight to a plane (36:30) just requires it to fly faster to achieve the same efficiency. Sailplanes add weight to increase penetration into headwinds. Only downside is climb rate might be a bit lower, and landing speed a bit higher.
    Nice hack (tip) to refresh OSD via panning. :)
    If you do, seeing the same aircraft with either INAV, and Ardupilot could be interesting.

    INAV only seems to experience the altitude hold bobing effect on twins.
    I managed to mitigate it on a Binary, using all the pitch2thr settings, although not completely.
    I wondered if it has to do with the thrust line, verses the vertical CG with twin tractor prop ?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Год назад +1

      Interesting. I hadn't really noticed the correlation before. Could be something to it! I haven't set up a ton of planes with inav or spent a lot of time tuning them, apart from when Marc helped me dial in the Eagle, and that one did fly rather well. To be fair though, it's a great flying little plane even without a flight controller. Kinda like this Swordfish but more "trainer like" with some built in stability.

  • @beyondfossil

    Anyone know if there's an HD camera switcher that will allow switching between 2 or more HD cameras on the same VTX? Then you can have a main view then a secondary view -- like at the nose of the plane for full unobstructed view of the ground, etc. Or even a zoom view.
    It would have to be some kind of board that switches multiple cams to one cable into the VTX. Then it takes an RC signal to control which camera selected for input into the VTX.
    In my analog FPV days, I had a 3 camera headtracking setup: 1) main view 2) rear view and 3) a 4x zoom view for checking out ground targets up close. Would be nice to have this in HD now but the digital signaling and protocols might be problematic for a physical switch.

      Yeah I think a 21700 would be a good fit for it. 4S2P could work, though it may need some weight in the tail to balance it. I flew the Esky Eagle with the stock antennas a bit before replacing them, they worked OK. I did see a little improvement with the RushFPV Cherries I put on there. I think just getting them higher up and less obstructed by things in the plane helps as much as being a better tuned antenna. These Hammers I used on here seem a slight bit better than the Cherries. I ordered another set to try on the Eagle for a more direct comparison to see if it's really the antennas, or some other factor making it perform a bit better.

  • @WinstonSmith1984
    @WinstonSmith1984 Год назад +1

    If that 270 degree servo can physically go further, then you can easily extend the pan range in INAV. I have no idea if Ardupilot supports that.
    You can also configure the ESCs to break on idle if you want to reduce drag during gliding and decrease the risk of damaged props on landing.
    Also I wish they had made the nav lights face backwards too as they nav lights are meant to be.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Год назад +2

      There's no physical stops in the servo, and you won't damage the feedback pot rotating it a full 360º, but the feedback pot only works in about a 270º range. The normal pulse range between 1000-2000uS drive it to about 180º, you have to extend the range to get the full 270. So it's already extended to the limits of what it can do and still center. Any more and starts rotating continuously, which is bad for wiring... lol

      I've been watching his designs, but haven't had the desire to print one yet. I don't think I'll ever print a whole plane. The airplane does not need to be level when the battery is plugged in. Just keep it stationary until the accelerometers work out the direction of the gravity vector. From then on, level is derived from the accelerometers, gyros, and clever algorithms 😊

    The home arrow seems to be pointing in the wrong direction when you pan the camera. I thought that was fixed in iNav 6.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Год назад +2

      During the first flight, I had it all set up with the pan servo so the home arrow would follow it, but the degree's was set up wrong so it didn't follow correctly. If I remember right it's something to do with the extended PWM range I'm using for the pan servo output, I know I had the same problem back when I first set that up on the Eagle, and I don't remember exactly how I solved it then. For the second flight I turned that off so the home arrow ignores the pan servo, until I fix the issue. ;)

I had even set up a throttle "lock" on my Skyhunter on a switch, so I'd set up my cruse then lock it and not worry about it again until I needed throttle control later in the flight. I was always worried I'd forget to unlock it if something came up where I needed quick throttle to get out of a situation, but thankfully it never happened. I haven't set it up on any of my other planes for that reason though. I try to get in the habit of not moving the throttle when panning with the rudder stick. Tightening up the "drag" on the throttle helps, especially if you use the ratchet with "notches" too instead of just the smooth throttle.
