    About Sifu Slim:
NSCA-CPT. Professional Speaker; Wellness Coach; Researcher; Author; Fitness Leader. All done with empathetic awareness, Lectures/Interviews can be done in English, Spanish, or French.
He has been a business traveler since working on the Paris Stock Exchange in 1983. He and his friends used to run through the streets of Paris and do push-ups and calisthenics under the outline of the Eiffel Tower and, in the summer time, jump right in the fountains at Trocadero to cool off. “We weren’t the only ones ‘les guardiens’ were after…” he confesses.
His European roots are important in his ethic of seeking the slower, old-school ethic. “When I look at my family’s home villages in Germany, Ireland, and Alsace-Lorraine, I see how people are still connected to the land. This is important in grounding ourselves, literally, spiritually, and emotionally. Being in the earth, touching it, working with plants and animals, being in nature-all of this is import for the natural order of things.”
As a young man, Sifu was also into resistance training with weights and machines three to four times per week, but, in his early 30s, realized that it wasn’t the way to continue for his lifetime practice. Too much sluggishness, joint pain, and muscle soreness. It also negatively impacted his practice of other sports like golf and tennis.

I am 53 years old and have been training BJJ since i was 32. My approach is a bit different but it works for me. I still roll hard, at least what i call hard for a 53 year old. lol I do a quick warm up roll and then hit it pretty hard. I have a black-belt but do not train with a gi anymore. It has been probably 4 years since i rolled in a gi. I only do no gi and on a yearly average roll only one day a week. I have been doing this for years, one day a week i go in and roll with whoever and I roll hard. To me it is about the fun of competition and testing my abilities against the younger guys, and if i can't be competitive with the average blue-belt level player in the average class then I don't want to do it anymore. Now to be clear i certainly do not try to fight out of submissions like i did in my 30's especially chokes. Physically i feel great except for my neck, and that is why i do not fight out of chokes like i used to because that is what injured my neck to begin with, alot of wear and tear. While I still roll hard, i also tell myself each time i go train that i am one roll away from retiring from BJJ for good if i my neck get's injured again. Getting old sucks sometimes. lol

Glad to hear your comments. As an hombre with more years behind him, I can share that there are certain things about martial arts I wouldn't want to walk away from:
      1. the camaraderie
      2. the sweat
      3. the dynamic energy
      4. keeping up some of my skills
      5. the martial arts mindset
      6. self-defense familiarity
If you wish to appear on my show sharing some thoughts on this, kindly reach out via my website.
      Peace and Oss,
      Sifu
