Countryfile has been given unprecedented access to the Queen's Sandringham estate.
Matt Baker discovers that the Queen's love of her most private rural hideaway comes through her father's side of the family. When George VI died at Sandringham in 1952 it became even more special to the Queen and as Matt discovers, memories of her father are written into the landscape, especially the trees on the estate.
Adam Henson looks into the farming history of Sandringham which has run as a mixed farm of nearly 6,000 acres for many years. Adam looks at the wheat and blackcurrant crops before turning his attention to the Red Poll cattle.
Ellie Harrison is at the Royal Stud just half a mile from the main house. It was here that the young princess would accompany both her grandfather and father to spend time with the thoroughbreds. From this moment onwards the young princess was spellbound and still is today. Ellie learns that the Queen asks for regular reports on all her horses and sees how once the horses' racing careers have finished, the Queen has found a new lease of life for them - dressage.
John Craven looks at the great flood of 1953 and meets the local people who were affected in the Sandringham area to hear their stories.
Ellie is also looking at the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh's work with scientists and ecologists to monitor the health of the land at Sandringham. She visits the Duke of Edinburgh's bird hide to witness the wildlife that visits the reclaimed land and calls it home.
Matt Baker also visits the Royal Pigeon Loft and discovers that the birds are a real passion of the Queen.
Finally, Anita Rani learns about Her Majesty's love of gun dogs. Anita meets gun dog handler Bill Meldrum and learns how he taught the Queen to win field trials.

The Queen was no cream puff. She was a hard working, hands on individual with common sense and a high motivation. The United Kingdom and the world was inspired with such a brilliant person.

I'm a Yank, and the amount of respect and admiration I had for her is immense. I was quite moved by her passing.
She really wasn't. She was an ordinary country woman of German and some what British birth, who clung to a way of life. Nothing more nothing less. She was very much like her mother, Very plain.

Hi! Before the Queen passed away, she met with Sarah, Duchess of York and asked her if she would care for her two remaining Corgis. Sarah was more than happy to take the Dogs, especially to do this for her majesty as it was quite the honor to be asked. I think a magazine did a photo shoot with Sarah featuring the Corgi's outside with her at The Royal Lodge. (It might have been "People"?) You could do a search for it and I bet it would be easy enough to find. 😊 Her horses have stables at her homes (castles 😊) and I'm sure she left them in good hands as well. She was a huge lover of animals, this is true! ❤😊
The Sandringham estate is straight out of a fairytale. It’s stunningly beautiful. You can see Queen Elizabeth had the perfect childhood with her devoted parents ❤
I visited this fall. What an exquisite place! I loved the garden and the house. Fascinating❤
To be honest, with a bit of good health and all that wealth, why, well, one, would be hard-pressed, not to have some degree of perfection.
In my opinion, this is the BEST tribute to the Queen. Illustrating where her true passions were, so close to animals and the land. All the ceremonies, state dinners, etc., she did for duty. Sounds like she was a country woman at heart! 😊💗 ~RIP Queen Elizabeth II🌹

As an American, I am just learning about the Royals, and i couldn't love them more now after watching such a fantastic documentary. Breath taking to say the least! ❤
What an extraordinary woman-The media did so little to cover the Queen beyond pomp and circumstance . . . And family travails. She was truly a brilliant woman with a broad array of in-depth knowledge and skills, coupled with courage, integrity and leadership ability. I wonder if her own people recognize what a gem they had in Queen Elizabeth II when they criticize the royalty.

I loved this series which shows another side of Queen Elizabeth as a "country woman," where she felt most at home. She was so talented, so knowledgeable whether it concerned farming, dogs, horses, hunting, right down to pigeon racing. Simply amazing and we were so fortunate to have her as our Queen for all those years. Gone but never forgotten.
very lucky to have met her majesty many times, my grandmother made the lampshades in the royal houses and estates. truly a wonderful woman, both my grandmother and her majesty.

I am very happy to learn about the Queen's leisure time. She worked so hard for so many years I am encouraged to know she did indeed have a full and enjoyable personal life as well.
Wow, I had no idea about the amount of work that went into Sandringham. What a treasure! Also, how cool is it that the Queen was so amazing with her working dogs. The more I read about the Queen, the more I respect her (even though my respect was immense for her before).
Every animal on estate, including pigeons who saved lots of lives in WWII when communications were destroyed-but her understand ing of land, crops, foods, animals and wild life-to preserve human life.
As an American, I have always admired the Queen and the way she forged forward no matter what was thrown at her...she always looked so composed. As I also live on a farm, I admire her commitment to the land, her horses, cattle and dogs...I love them all as well!

Very nice to hear the Queen talk candidly and see those old pics. She obviously left a great impression on those who knew her as a "country woman." Perhaps one day we'll see inside Sandringham as well.

I live in the US and I cannot get enough of the beauty of the UK. My grandparents were dairy farmers and my family comes from farmers. Its in the blood. Our family farm is now gone but the memories remain. My love of the land, dogs, horses and flowers all come from my time on the farm.

She will always be My Queen since I was born in 1956 my parents got married in April 1953 and they went to London for their honeymoon and they were getting ready for the coronation

An American who watched the coronation Day as a 9 yr old on our little b/w tv fascinated while my mom walked about working and saying " those people sitting for hours in the Cathedral could be fitted with tubes so they could pee without getting up."

When you approach Sandringham in Norfolk it’s like stepping back in time. No modern houses anywhere to be seen, like a Thomas Hardy setting!
I grew up on a horse farm from the time I as 12, in America (prior to that I lived in an Irish Catholic neighborhood in the city) where we mostly had Arabian show horses. But always a few American Quarter horses who were working horses and lovely. The Arabians were so high strung, I got rattled once or twice and decided it was not my thing. I read books and went off and studied literature. But my cousins had very respectable careers showing the Arabians. One became large animal vet. thoroughbreds race horses are even more high strung, and look at Her Majesty, totally at comfort with them. She had a way, and with people, also. I will always have much respect for the example she set in how to deal with all living things.

As a child I asked for a horse whenever I thought my parents might say yes (never happened) I did however read every book in the library about horses. And that’s unfortunate but I guess I’m a bit selfish saying that because I’d love to go for a nice leisurely ride with you for fun. So instead, we could hang out on some comfortable down chaises and have great discussions on the books and authors we love-oh, and a nice picnic lunch too :-)

I had no clue she was a farmer. I have a whole new look of her. To know all she wanted was to be a farmer say’s she was a humble Queen and really cared about the people and the land. I’m American but I respect her.

My favorite royal residence ever ❤️ 😍. I am so very pleased that it is a well used and productive working farm. I am also very pleased that the late Queen Elizabeth was a very knowledgeable and professional person regarding her skills in animal health care and welfare, horse, and pigeon racing, hunting dogs, and pet dogs, plus arable crop production. I remember as a schoolboy, in the summer holidays we would take the train from London to Boston to visit our grandmother and we all travelled to Norfolk to spend the summer holidays. Great memories especially playing on the vast sandy Norfolk broads.

This is such an interesting documentary. Thank you for posting it. Like most people, I knew about her love for horses and Corgis but I had no idea about her interest in homing pigeons, cattle breeding or gun dogs. I love that she was an expert gun dog handler and really enjoyed the footage of her working with her dogs. I also love that she was able to spend several weeks on this estate each year. I’m sure it was a great time to re-set herself.

So yes you can, and you are not alone.
I miss some great classic actors who lived and created in previous century. I have never met them as they had been long dead when I was born. So yes, people can miss someone the have never met, especially when these people represent entire epoque. The Best Epoque.

Mr. Peter, you love your pigeons and clearly feel a deep commitment to them. Please don’t ever apologize for your emotions surrounding your love for these birds regardless of what form it takes. Our connection to our animals of all species reflects our deep connection to life in all its forms. You’re right, it really is hard to put into words our feelings for *all* creatures, living or having traversed that rainbow bridge whether it’s a beloved dog or cat, horse, goat, budgie, goshawk and sometimes, even the two legged animals called humans ;-)

i watched so many documentaries about the queen. I must say I was not expected such content. It really touched me. The way they presented her passion for horses, wild life, pigeon 9 I hate them but now I love them lol), dog training etc...amazing!
