Thanks for the video. Your review is spot on based on my experience. I’ve been running mine nonstop for a couple of weeks and it’s the best sounding DAC I’ve heard out of the 10 I’ve tried. It has limitations as you noted. If you want just a DAC and the best sound for about $2K or less, this is the one IMO. Why you most certainly will ask. The sound of cymbals is just right not too harsh and not too rolled off. Drums sound like they are playing in front of you. I’m hearing details on my very revealing system I never have before. I noticed slight differences comparing other DACs in this price range but this one was noticeable right out of the box. Highly recommend. Rock on!
agree completely been through Ares2 , Pontus 2, Gustard R26..pretty good , but this one is a bit special ..at first somewhat bright now smoother ...low hours still , two thumbs up

I received my Cyan 2 and it immediately whooped my Audio-gd R7's arse which was around $2.5K when it was new. It has everything, holography, deep soundstage, superb timbre and dynamics but what really drew me in was the clarity and transparency. I feel that it won't become dislodged from the main system anytime soon, and might even cause another one or two more to come my way.
Are you comparing cyan2 with R7 HE model?(not R7) i am now considering to get r7 he, can you compare r7he(or just r7) with cyan2? Want to hear your experience more
Bought the cyan 2 after owning the spring 3 kte for almost 2 years. Using HQplayer to upsample to DSD, the Spring was better still....but only by a very small margin.

The only other DACs I was looking at were the Laiv and the Schiit Yggy GS+. But both od those cost a bit more in one case and only a smaller bit for the Yggy... Though if money is tight the Cyan 2 is a no brainer...
You need to get your hands on the Gustard R26. Pre amp, streamer, remote control, and one of the most musical dacs I’ve heard to date. Would love to know your thoughts on it.
Thanks for the the review. I have a headphone setup only, with a PC running Roon and HQPlayer. Just one USB cable to the DAC. I am also pairing my Cyan 2 with a Topping A90. Headphone is an old LCD-X (2018), with HQ on the HQPlayer. I found the result to be very good. Happy you are confirming it. Now I am stuck in my upgrade path. Dont know if I upgrade the A90 (something below 3k), or the LCD-X (I was thinking about the Emperyan 2). Any suggestion, ?

And if you look on the news market you can get some great units for less than 2/3 of the price, in much higher categories. I recommend trolling through the channel pages to find some amazing stuff that you might like the look of I can list a lot of things for you, but without knowing a little about what you like what music is your preference lifestyle et cetera it’s a little bit difficult, so I recommend scrolling through the review
I bought and installed the Cyan2 yesterday with a Synergistic Pink fuse. It’s really built like a tank! My first impression is that both needs running time, before I can judge it. My previous DAC was the Chord Qutest, also a very, very fine DAC, which I could sell for a high price! The next step would be buying the Holo Red…
@@beslemetoCannot say, you have to listen both side to side to judge. I sold my Qutest at forehand. In my opinion are both very good. I also bought the Shitt Modi+ for concert listening through my Apple TV in conjunction with IFi SPDIF iPurifier 2. The latter improves the sound a lot!
Difficult to say, because both are very good 👍 and I sold my old Qutest at forehand for a good price, so I could not compare them side by side. Perhaps the Qutest 2 will be even better, but the margins are quite small in today’s DAC’s. It’s more a matter of taste imo.
the trick to get better highs is upscaling your music. just pcm at higher samplerate. it will open up the highs this is due to a limitation of NOS to rolloff the high frequencies at lower samplerates. is is basically circumventing some quirk with digital audio.
Currently I am a bit confused about one price point in hifi. Maybe you can share your thoughts. There are very interesting more affordable brands now which still get into prices ranges that are not cheap. So if I for example get two schiit Tyr amps and a freya pre amp I might have something very nice for the money but at the price range about 5k I also can have a second hand Accuphase e-600. So there we come to the price range where those high end pieces become available second hand.

Also the Merason Reuss (another Swiss dac) is probably a closer comparison as it is a hybrid r2r and delta sigma. I know the Merason dac-1 can be obtained for half price through the right dealers…

I watched your comparison vid you made featuring the Red. I ordered the Red on 9/3 which wii replace my Bluesound Node. Running Roon on a Mac Mini M1 with a CAT6 cable to the M1. Looking forward to playing DSD files thru the Cyan 2 with the Red.

Currently i have schiit audio gungnir multibit dac. but never tried holo dac before. I like tube amps (prefer organic, airy, holographic, lush sounding) Now i am considering cyan2 for my secondary dac. If I'm trying to buy a dac that can beat cyan2 for sure, I'm wondering which dac I should buy (I think you said in this review video that it should go over at least 3k price, but the statement that it sounds more musical than may dac is confusing me). Also do you have any experience with schiit dac?(gumby or yggy) can you compare cyan2 with them? Thanks for your review again.
@@rkrnddl5 thank you it’s very much appreciated, and I’m glad it’s of some use. Yes, it’s possible to have better DAC technically, and yet be less musical of course . No I’ve not tried. That line of product is very difficult to get hold of in the UK. The last time was in 2017. For those characteristics you talked about the May is the next unit. You can jump from head with a tube amplifier. I would bypass spring three seen as this is pretty much there But there are other DAC that are far better and technical than me the numbers don’t always tell the story I recommend looking at the lampizator baltic DAC same price as May or a used Atlantic TRP2 or TRP3, review will be coming out shortly. They are tube based the AC in that price category and they’re amazing.
Great vid, tyvm. As a Spring 3 KTE w/ pre-amp owner; if this is as good as you say, this is definitely worth a consideration for anyone in the market. I love my Spring 3 but the price and size was a bit of a draw back.

finally, I have come to the point to go digital and invest in a decent DAC. I need to decide for the Cyan2 or a used Spring2 KTE, for as good as the same price... I will only use 1 source, and it will be Pi2AES (using AES or I2S) - so really don't care for the missing input selector nor USB. Nor do I care if something is new or 2nd hand :). From the looks, the Spring2 would win (I am using horn speakers + mcintosh2300/275 tube amp)... What option would you go for? I understand from the video the Cyan2 has that rich tonality for which the Spring2 was famed for; but then the Cyan2 might even combine this with the attack and snappiness of the Spring3/May... so overall Cyan2 being the best of 2 worlds and best option sonically ?

HELLO! I have been saving for the L1 May to replace my Qutest on a $15K treated stereo system. I do not oversample, do not mind the input selection caveat. How far/much do you think would that $3K delta between cyan2 an L1 may sonically improve? Thank you!

I have both the May KTE and Cyan 2. I think it's worth noting that the May KTE can do 5.8v while the Cyan 2 can't. That's useful very some power hungry cans, right?

I hope Holo Audio releases a KTE version of the Cyan 2 and gives us 1) an input selector 2) a method to dim the lights and or turn them off completely. I believe most of us would pay for the improvements vs jumping to the Spring.

@@jordohayes yes, definitely sound it’s best after 24 hours once it’s broken in, which takes roughly 250 hours, but I never ever switch my equipment off unless it’s tubes or class a comma so mine was on for 18 months LOL
As much as Id like to bang the hype drum, I was not overly impressed by Cyan 2. I thought it was good for the price and had very agreeable sound, but in NOS mode it was a bit smeared and the imaging and depth wasnt great, and in HQP DSD256 it improved in imagaing and staging but still lacked tonal density and realism. There are dacs that are cheaper that do better in depth, tonal weight, and texture. I thinn it depends on your sonic priorities whether you will prefer it in the price range

The apex level DAC reviewers for me are Hans and iiWi and it is worth watching their reviews I have a Cyan 2 and it works for me Worth checking it out No features may be a problem for some but it may be just what some may like a lot I use a SPDIF 4x1 in and out with a remote if I want to switch
@@Clockrossino I think my biggest surprise was how incredible it sounded out of the box which was very unusual addition and especially the holo stuff required hundreds of hours and it was a consistent thing on a couple of devices This sounded excellent out of the box and just got better and I think it flattened out within a week

No one seems to mention that the channels are swapped when decoding DSD material.
Would this benefit from using a DDC to convert a USB signal to I2S? My dream is to front this with the Holo Audio Red.

There are dacs that are cheaper that do better in depth, tonal weight, and texture. I thinn it depends on your sonic priorities whether you will prefer it in the price range

@@cheveyo2403 so in theory, it works on an active basis, if you don’t have USB connected, it will automatically switch to the active channel without needing to do anything, so possibly

No features may be a problem for some but it may be just what some may like a lot
I use a SPDIF 4x1 in and out with a remote if I want to switch

@@Clockrossino I think my biggest surprise was how incredible it sounded out of the box which was very unusual addition and especially the holo stuff required hundreds of hours and it was a consistent thing on a couple of devices
This sounded excellent out of the box and just got better and I think it flattened out within a week

There a loads of 1st class dacs below 5k that beat 10k plus dacs this is one of them.
